Discovering a new park while trying to figure out lunch plans is even more epic. The Niu Valley neighborhood is usually a quiet one, so I was interested in finding the Niu Valley neighborhood park somewhat a blessing when I needed a place to sort out what was for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I arrived here around 1:15pm via public transportation. The Bus routes 1, 1L, 22, 23, and 24 come through this stretch of paradise and stop along Kalanianaole Highway. You'll need to walk about¼ mile or so from the highway itself to get to the park. During my most recent stay at the Niu Valley neighborhood park, I tended to just walk around the perimeter of the park and check out what this park has to offer. The plus side is that there's nice gym equipment for kids to play and families to gather here for an evening here to spend time together before dinner. The equipment doesn't look aged at all and the park itself seems maintained on a weekly basis. I do enjoy the park when it's very green during the year. Any sight of yellow or no grass seems to be a lack of maintenance - at least for me anyway. Niu Valley neighborhood park seems like its an extension of Niu Valley middle school, but its not. I spent about an hour here relaxing, enjoying, and walking through the park before making my lunch plans. It's always nice to have the park do your serious thinking for you. The overall experience here at the Niu Valley neighborhood park is classified as subtle, classic, and quiet. The wind that comes through the area is always brisk and sometimes breezy too. While I was here at the Niu Valley neighborhood park, there was just a couple of people here, not including myself. Neighborhood parks are a great and inexpensive way to spend the day without having to spend money. Of course, you can walk and cruise the mall, but chances are you don't spend money at a park. I love the groomed nature of the park and how neat and organized everything here is. The quiet ambiance of Niu Valley neighborhood park is what excites me when I can come back here, if I am in the area. For the most part though, I ended up walking around the perimeter of the park, which isn't too far around. I also people watched as something to do while doing those laps. I enjoyed the fact that this neighborhood park is definitely clean and away from basically everything and off the main road. If you ever need the mental time off, consider coming here to rest and recharge. Although the 2020 pandemic can be a problem, do what you can so that the Niu Valley neighborhood park can be of value to you. I'd recommend coming here if you are in the area and worth every second being here. It made me smile and hope it will bring you happiness too. The Niu Valley Neighborhood park has been a fun and soothing discovery. I'm glad that there is no visible homeless situation here - at least during the day. One major turn off when I come to neighborhood parks is the tents and all the garbage that's haphazardly on the property. I enjoyed my experience here at the Niu Valley neighborhood park, especially because it is tucked away into the residential area away from the main drag. It makes for a perfect peaceful getaway that's sure to please anyone and everyone who comes here. The park its great for families and individuals. I bet this park is used on a daily basis during the school year, since it's located next to Niu Valley middle school. It's physical address is 5510 Kanau Street on the western side of Halemauau Street. Like all community and neighborhood parks, there is no admission fee, which is awesome and expected. As far as parking goes, your best bet would be to try to find street parking on residential roads wherever you can to be as close to the park as possible. They have outdoor tennis, volleyball and basketball courts and a nice grassy field for little league baseball games and practices. Like all facilities while still under pandemic restrictions, be sure to follow the protocols in effect at the time of your visit. The views from the upper part of the park on 20th Ave. are quite nice, especially during sunrise. During normal in-school class days, most of the street between the school and the park is closed. On the mauka side there is access to a couple of parking stalls for your use when using the park. An interesting side note is that the park's rec. bldg. next to the children's playground equipment area used to be an open pavillion that was one of the coolest places to sit. The tradewinds would roll through with a sweet breeze as you sat and kicked back to daydream during the lazy days of summer.

I will have to admit I have a soft spot for this park, as my friends & I use to hang out at this park during our Intermediate, errr............or should I say middle school dayz. I even played park league b-ball for Petrie park back in da dayz...........and if I can find da vintage pic, I'll post it for you folks, so you can get a good laugh! Buwahahahahaha! Petrie Community Park is not overly big, but it has a little of something for everyone (for all ages). Petrie park has several basketball courts, tennis courts, a volleyball court, a jungle gym for the kiddies, and a large field for kids to play soccer, baseball, as well as football. There are also several benches & picnic tables on the park premises, should you wanna eat there, or watch the kiddies. In my recent visits here, I could clearly see that the field could use some water, as the grass was pretty brown & dried up...........but of course summer is just around the corner, so I guess maybe the city is trying to save water? There is also a office pavilion, as well as a restroom at Petrie park, but be careful if you come here at night, as I saw some sketchy element hanging & loitering around the restroom area. There is no private parking lot for this park, but not to fret as there is a lot of street parking within the Kaimuki neighborhood. Through the years, not much has changed at this park since I used to hang here as a kid, but glad to see folks still bring kids here to enjoy this nice community park.

Then…read morenature that you'll find here is not one you'd expect like flies and feral chickens and this lovely patch of park in Kaimuki was quite disappointing as you can't even walk in with the over growth of weeds that just took over and surrounded this park. Sure we had some great rain the past few days though this was grown far back previous that time and it's just sad to see how neglected it has become. There is nothing here no playground gym for the kids just weeds and several benches and a lot of rules which all are understandable but what a sad situation that could be a great place as it sits right in the midst of residential area that I know many could enjoy. Hopefully it gets the love it deserves one day from the City & County of Honolulu.

There is no real signage and it can be confusing to find the entrance for the small loop trail, but once you do, it's not too bad at all. Some rock climbing involved, and nothing too intense overall. You'll get some really great views of Diamond Head and Kaimuki.

The Hawaii Kai neighborhood is often a quiet one, so I was interested in finding the Hahaione Valley Neighborhood park deep in the valley is always a blessing when I needed a place of solace to sort out what life has dealt to me on this particular day It was also a time to think about what was for dinner on a casual Sunday afternoon in April 2020. I arrived here around 4:30pm via public transportation. Only 1 route on The Bus comes through this stretch of paradise. This route is route 1L and 80A and probably only on the eastbound direction. It stops in front of the park, which is awesome! During my most recent stay at the Hahaione Valley Neighborhood park, I tended to just slow walk around the perimeter of the park (as most of my experiences at local parks are these days) and check out what this park has to offer. The plus side is that there's nice gym equipment for kids to play and families to gather here for an evening to spend time together. So I've been trying to find parks with different types of equipment. I'm like a park stalker, haha. While driving, I'd look out at parks and check out the equipment at the parks. I've seen quite a few ones but then I look at the reviews on Yelp and it turns me away. Reviews say that there's a lot of homeless or theft there. But today I discovered a website that's shows me all the playground equipment at all the parks. And I found this great park today. It's really close to my home so I'm so glad that I found it. My daughter loves this park. She's quite a monkey and she loves to climb the apparatus. She went up the stairs and down the slide many times. They also had a disk where you could stand or sit and you could spin on it. We don't have that at our neighborhood park. I showed her how to do it and she loved it. She kept wanting to do it over and over again. She spun around so much and was laughing the whole time. In addition to the playground equipment they also have a big area where you can have a picnic or lunch. They have several picnic tables to sit at. They also have a tennis court, basketball court, and volleyball court. Best park I've been to so far! I will definitely come back soon!

We were there today with 4 dogs trying to practice obedience training and there was several loose dogs playing ball while 1 dog was off leash with no collar and was running up towards our dogs. This dog looked like a pit mix and came up to my dog and almost seemed like a fight was going to start. Human nature made me yell at the owner since we were distant apart and he couldn't get his dog back. Please be responsible people! 1. Don't let your dog loose with no collar 2. Take your dogs to run at a dog park 3. It's the law to have a leash on your dog out in the public except when you go to offleash designated dog parks 4. When your dog is offleash in an area not designated, any damage to human/dog, owner of dog that caused bite will be held liable!!!

Everytime my son has tried to play there, there has been urine on a slide, or someone washing themselves in the water fountain. Last time my son was there, there were two people at the edge of the park just snorting stuff off the center console of a car nearest the jungle gym. At the end of the day, until the trains and the camps are up and running, this park has just become another homeless shelter. Too bad. The play set is nice and the location is convenient.

My boyfriend and I live close by and will sometimes take my pup, Olaf, on a walk here. The park is surrounded by a fence, has a community center, playground/jungle gym, basketball court, and large open field (perfect for my tiny pup to run around). The area and neighborhood is definitely a little rugged--I highly suggest coming to visit during the day but don't suggest staying too late after the sun goes down. Aside from the occasional homeless that frequent the area, for the most part I would say that this park is safe. During the day, I've recently noticed that the community center has turned into a road test-testing center. Parking is mostly street parking with the exception of 1 handicap stall, and 2 regular parking stall off of Alder Street. The people in this neighborhood definitely care about making their community better and you can definitely tell! There is a lot of pride and love coming from the neighborhood surrounding the park. The house on the corner of Alder and Rycroft Street is also home to a free little library!
