Thus, visiting Kronborg Castle was a highlight. First a little history, Frederick 2nd became King and married his 14 year old cousin, Sophie. Scandal, nah, not in those days.He wanted to build a castle that would be the envy of Europe and thus he did, Kronborg. Now, there are no historical facts that confirm that Shakespeare visited this castle. It is believed, the actors who performed in his plays did visit this castle and regaled William with stories and that is how Hamlet was conceived. Next, the castle...absolutely stunning ( I would like to believe that somehow I had relatives born in this era and the castle is in my blood). There are specific points where visitors can visit: Cannon Tower( 145 steps to the beautiful scenic views and you can see Sweden from here), Castle Kitchen,Chapel, Dance Hall. There are 45 minute tours that a guide will give you an overview of Castle and a 15 minute talk about how the Castle came to be started in the 1420's. I participated in the 15 minute overview and the staff member really gave a great history; I didn't know that Sweden and Denmark were at war with each other for centuries. The grounds are magnificent; there are steps to climb to get the scenic view of the sea. There are cafes, galleries and gift shops you can visit. I spent a pretty krone on some beautiful mementos. The entire staff were wonderful, knowledgeable and kind. Thank you! I highly recommend visiting Kronborg Castle when you visit Denmark. How to get here: Fly to Denmark, take Regional Train to Helsinor station then catch bus outside station. The bus ride is 5 minutes (1st stop). Or you can walk to the Castle, around 10 minutes. Purchasing tickets online was a breeze, and checking in when we arrived was seamless. From the stunning bridges to the breathtaking interiors, every part of this place was beautiful. Navigating inside was straightforward, and we were amazed by the architecture and how well the castle has been preserved. One of our favorite parts was the underground area--it was such a fascinating and unique spot to explore. The gift shop was also impressive, offering a wide variety of souvenirs to take home. They claim that this area is completely beyond the rules and the laws of Copenhagen. In some ways, that is pretty easy to see as the main street is lined with people selling weed and hash, which is still illegal in Denmark. Copenhagen is not Amsterdam. Though a bit sketchy, this city within a city is very well maintained. I am sure there is some other story going on here. ...One that we will never know. This being said, what you will find here is some of the best street art and graffiti that you will witness anywhere across Copenhagen. Of course, it is clearly stated all over the place, "No Photos." But, I'm guess that is more to keep the people dealing drugs safe and off the radar than anything else. One of the funny/interesting things I find about this location is that tour buses actually pull up to it. I don't know, maybe it's just me me, but if you are truly embracing an alternative lifestyle that all seems rather intrusive. Nonetheless, this is an interesting place. Even if all you do is look at the great street art, it is worth the visit.

We visited the castle on a Sunday around noon. Semi busy and we saw a couple of guided tours…read more 4 levels that were accessible via a spiral staircase. (Elevator was available also). Restrooms were located in the lower level. Tight spiral staircase with the lower level having a Dungeon atmosphere. We enjoyed the period paintings both on the walls and ceilings (some were breathtaking). The Castle has housed the Museum of National history (since 1878) with a collection that presents 500 years of Danish history. The furniture, Grand rooms, Knights armor and overall decorations transport you back to a time long ago. My only wish would have been to have more posted information/signage about what was in view. There is also a Church attached/next door which wasn't open to the public when we first arrived as there was a wedding. Opened up when we finished our Castle tour so we walked next door and spent some time there. Organ was playing so it added to the peaceful vibe and complemented the architectural beauty. It took us about 1.5 hours for Castle and Church although we didn't explore the grounds and the garden area in the back -so would recommend 2.5 to 3 hours for all. Saw a small Cafe. Service minded people were helping visitors with questions and ticket purchases. Really impressed by this Castle as well Hillerød.

Nyhavn is a beautiful waterfront adorned with restaurants, canal tours, and connection to the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen, who lived in several of its houses. The vibrant colors of the houses were spectacular. "Nyhavn is a historic 17th-century canal district in Copenhagen, Denmark, famous for its colorful 17th-century townhouses, historic ships, and vibrant atmosphere." I made it a point to pass by daily because the beauty of the waterfront was a great way to start my day. It was a joy to see the shopkeepers get their restaurants ready for business, customers lining up for the canal tours and getting a peek at the Kissing Bridge. My visit in December was special due to the Christmas spirit at Nyhavn, where the iconic harbour is lined with festive stalls selling Christmas decorations, traditional Danish Christmas treats and steaming cups of gløgg (mulled wine). There are numerous restaurants offering fine dining to casual eating, especially the famous open faced sandwich, Smorrebrod. Nyhavn is close to the Royal Opera House, Royal Danish Theater and the Broen Food Market. It is a must see in Copenhagen.

Dragør is the perfect tourist spot to take you back to historic Denmark. Located in Kastrup, just…read morebeyond the CPH Airport, Dragør is one of the more unknown tourist spots in CPH. Boasting 76+ pristine historic buildings from the 1700 and 1800s, Dragør creates a picture perfect fishing village. The village is very well preserved, from the thatched roofed buildings to the narrow cobble stone streets. You almost feel like you're in an amusement park until you peer through the windows of the local buildings and discover that these are actual homes still being lived in today. Getting to the village and the harbor is relatively easy. You can't directly get there by train but there are plenty of buses that will take you directly there. But be prepared for a long bus ride if you're coming from anywhere in central CPH. There is also a parking lot near the harbor but it seemed to be consistently full, especially if the weather is nice. On a beautiful sunny day, the harbor beyond the village is the perfect place to grab an ice cream from one of the many local shops or grab a coffee and walk along the boat pier. Most locals like to soak up the sun by the harbor and enjoy the nice sea breeze. You can even view the bridge to Sweden and if you're really lucky, maybe Sweden itself. But don't limit yourself on visiting only during nice weather. Apparently, they have a ton of events during the winter and go all out for Christmas. I definitely plan to revisit Dragør this winter to see it turned into a quaint Christmas Village.
