Although they were booked, they squeezed me in for a 7:40 pm massage with Nicolas Ovel for 8/2/17. They asked for an email or phone number and my Groupon voucher number. I was warned the appointment might start closer to 8 pm since they were tightly booked that day. I arrived at 7:40 pm and patiently waited in their reception area. At 8 pm, I went to knock on therapist's door without answer. At 8:10 pm, I called the therapist and got his voicemail. I left a message asking why he missed our appointment and inquiring about rescheduling. The therapist called me back about 10 minutes later saying the appointment was moved to 7:15 pm and he left since I wasn't there. I questioned how a change was made without my authorization. Nicolas said he sent a text message and called 3x but my phone just rang out. I told him he must have written down the wrong phone number because I have a VM on my line and I don't have any missed calls or text messages. Nicolas elevated his voice saying he had proof he sent a text. He said he would have sent an email, but I failed to give him my email address as required. I reminded him he gave me a choice between a phone number and email before saying even if you sent an email the time can't change unless I verify I am ok with the change. Before I could make sure Nicolas did in fact text the right phone number, he abruptly cut me off with a loud NO! He continued his rude and extremely disrespectful behavior by yelling about how he is not going back and forth. He said I missed my 7:15 pm appointment so it's my fault he won't be refunding my money. I told him I blamed him for changing my appointment without authorization. He told me to go deal with Groupon and hung up on me. I spent over 3 hours traveling to and from appointment, waiting, and responding to Groupon (therapist prematurely marked voucher as used so the issue had to be further escalated within Groupon before they eventually undeemed it for a refund). In the end, I was left with my same soldier pain and a headache.

Now, I will say that it took me a moment to arrive to this conclusion. Not entirely knowing what to expect and having not asked many questions prior to the start (I like to be surprised), I was a bit confused when the massage started. Let me back up: before the massage, I completed a form which took a couple minutes, and then Melvin, who also ended up being my therapist, and is the owner of this spot, started asking me more pointed questions about the things I was feeling in my body, some of my history, etc. He was very thorough in his line of questioning and I appreciated that. You should definitely plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete the form and answer some of these questions. When's the initial intake was over, we headed to the treatment room. The treatment room is very tranquil and dark. The bed is super comfortable and heated. The sheets and headrest are clean with no lingering smells, which I have experienced at other places in this area. For the first 10 minutes or so of my massage, I was mentally trying to pinpoint the type of massage that it was. After a while, I realized that it was, in fact, a signature massage that combined a number of different modalities. In one session, I experienced deep tissue, myofascial release, theragun, acupressure, and a couple other things. That said, if you walk into your experience looking for something specific or even looking for a hyper traditional massage, you may be disappointed. Maybe you can request that, but feeling the way I felt when I got off the table, you'll probably just want to trust Melvin. Once I gave into the process and let my body feel everything, I realized the intentionality of the work. In just an hour, Melvin was able to pinpoint certain areas and sensitivities I had not yet realized, clearly drawing connections between one body part and another, and doing his best to relieve pressure from both. By the time the massage ended, I had to pretty much peel myself off of the table to avoid slipping into a deep sleep because my body felt so good. I am the type of person who typically gets a certain type of natural high after really good massages and really good acupuncture sessions. This massage left me with that feeling. I would definitely recommend. However, I would also recommend that you keep an open mind when booking an appointment because not everything is going to be the same as what you might get at a big box, membership style place or similar. A couple quick notes: the building sits on the corner, and the suite is located in the basement. There is an elevator, and there are bathrooms on the basement level. You will be asked to strip down to just your lower underwear. That is pretty standard, but for people who that might freak out, just wanted to forewarn you. Parking is free in the attached lot. The lot is a little packed, but she'll probably be able to find a spot. If not, there are spots and an accompanying lot nearby.
