At 9:45, I asked how much longer it would be. It was too long, and I had to be back at work by a certain time, so I told them I was leaving and did so. That would be enough for me to avoid a place and recommend that others do the same, as keeping the appointments you make is one of the basic hallmarks of a serious business. It didn't end there. The next weekend I went to a different optometrist. That optometrist was unable to help me, as these fools at Gateway Eye Associates had put a "prior authorization" on my insurance. I tried to call Gateway Eye Associates, but all on receives when calling them is an automated message directing one to their website. I ended up having to wait until Monday morning to call my insurance company and have them remove the hold. So, not only were they unable to help me, but they also prevented anyone else from helping me as well. Seriously: Don't go here.

Then she asked me again when it came appointment time; turns out she did not write it in the system. Thankfully I had it in a note on my phone. Not something you keep on hand! Secondly, I was charged for glasses before even being fitted for them. Lastly, it had been 2.5 weeks since I had my appointment and did not get a call that my glasses were ready. Sure enough I called the office and they had them....just didn't notify me. Returning here is up in the air for me. While I had a good experience with the doctor, paying as much as I did for glasses and not having an entirely good experience left sort of a bad taste in my mouth.

He also said that there was nothing wrong with my eyes (I have a vitreous detachment), that I do not have astigmatism and said that my previous prescription for contacts was too high. He gave me an -8.50 for both eyes. My left eye is normally a -9.50 and I believe my right is a -9.25. When I put in these contacts at home, I was severely disoriented and my eyes had trouble focusing. I also was getting a major headache, so I took them out. Today, I tried wearing contacts again using my old prescription in my left eye and his prescription in my right. No major issues, but he was convinced my eyes do not have astigmatism and should be at a lower power. Not sure what to say except that he made it seem like every eye doctor from my past was stupid and he was not. He did say "do you want to get a second opinion?" but if you know anything about insurance, you don't get that second opinion without paying for it out of pocket. This results, for my child and for me, in underutilization of our vision coverage (through which a vision exam is provided each year with $0 co-pay), and a $40 per person co-pay. So, our fees increased $80 this year for no good reason. Arbitrary changes that result in increased charges to customers (and no additional revenue for the provider) are bad business practice. Upon arrival, I was admitted late and it took 15 minutes to process paperwork. An additional 10-15 minutes were spent doing the routine machines, then I saw the doctor at 4:45pm. The exam was generally fine, but honestly, I don't want an explanation of every little thing - I don't have time for your flex. After confirming I can identify letters, I went back to have my other eye photographed. I was then prompted to try on new contacts to confirm they worked. Great. Then it was time to pay and I was slammed with a nearly $160 bill. $39 for photos (this was shared up front) and close to $110 for a contact fitting, which by the way, I was not truly informed about. I was simply sat down and told to try the contacts. I was flabbergasted and shared as much - Diana, the assistant, was absolutely smug. I asked why I was not informed of itemized expenses and she said I didn't ask. The glasses and contact prescription would not be released to me until I paid the contact fitting fee. I never had this fee at my last place, and I will absolutely be returning to my prior place despite the less than convenient location now. Never in my life, on my SAME insurance, have I ever paid $110 for a contact fitting. The fees and lack of transparency, combined with the poor bedside manner, gets a HUGE THUMBS DOWN. The doctor was fine and competent, but man, only go here if you want to shell out way more than you need to. You will be paying exorbitant costs for service you can get elsewhere for much less. Furthermore, I was told my issue was with insurance. No ma'am, my insurance puts X amount towards these components, you are responsible for charging outrageous fees. The glasses selection was mediocre, very safe, certainly no options that are fashion forward or bold. The office was clean except for one machine that had disgusting foundation from a prior client on the chin and head rests. This office touts their exceptional cleaning due to COVID. They were unable to print a receipt for payment and had to give me a written copy. Honestly, I rely on other professionals working in their field to deliver a reliable product. When I booked the appt as a new patient, the assistant should have provided pertinent information regarding their services. This is reasonable. I suggested she do this and she sarcastically said, "I'll make a list." I replied, "I think that's a great place to start." Why not just have a PDF of the services and fees and tell patients to call their insurance ahead of time to determine coverage. Learn from my headache and don't waste your time here. Oh! And considering I didn't get my eyes dilated, my appt was still over 1.5 hours!!!! Talk about inefficient and a waste of everyone's time!
