It was our first full day in Cork, and we had just finished having breakfast, and wanted to get a…read moresense as to what the area had to offer. As we had had general success with city tours in Dublin and Galway we figured why not, there are certainly worse ways to spend a couple of hours. That's probably technically true - we could have spent a couple of hours fighting off pickpockets or being strangled by an elephant. But at least with those activities the level of expectation would have been minimal (and hey, what stories we'd have to share!). We waited with a group of others near the foot of Oliver Plunkett Street on a surprisingly humid early Sunday afternoon (word to the wise - at the time we visited Ireland, the weather was more consistent with our experiences in Florida than our expectations for the British Isles, so one doesn't necessarily require heavy-layered clothing in the summertime). The bus arrived on time, and we were able to secure spots on the roof. In some limited ways the ride was informative - we did learn about tours we could take of nearby places, and we were informed about some freaky churches in the area. The close calls with foliage was also surprisingly entertaining. But unlike other rides, there was no personality from the driver. In fact, there was no interaction from the driver, apart from collecting our tolls, as the commentary was pre-recorded, and boring. So, my recommendation would be to consult one of the tourist shops to inquire about things to do in the area (i.e. Ring Of Kerry, Cobh, The Blarney Stone), and to simply walk around the River Lee island to take the city sights in yourself.

But of all our days in Ireland, this one in Cobh was sunny (if chilly) and not a tour-bus in sight when we showed up for our walking tour. Visiting Cobh was one of the highlights of our trip to Co. Cork, the museum and then the trail tour were complete surprises - we enjoyed both so much -- walking around with a local who enjoyed telling the stories, it was a real pleasure. We also realized how lucky we were with the timing (we were COLD, but we were able to have such a wonderful, personalized visit). I highly recommend this to anybody visiting Co. Cork - definitely add a day - spend time going through the museum (lots of great information on emigration as well as the visits of famous ships and people) and the "Titanic Trail" is about way more than the Titanic. I booked a private chartered mini bus tour with J.O'Callaghans for a group of 11. I came here with…read morea group of friends and figured a nice, relaxing day trip would be a nice way to check out the remote Dingle Peninsula. The price was a steal, if you have even a small group you can more than likely do the trip without being saddled with random strangers on a regular bus tour for about the same cost. The very punctual bus was a nice Mercedes 15 passenger bus with cushy leather captains chairs, a mini fridge and massive windows so you could take in all the scenery. Our driver was the BEST!!! He was so knowledgeable about the area, it's history and random trivia factiods. He let us dictate where we stopped, how long we stayed, gave us tips for places to check out in the various towns and stopped at many scenic overlooks for the shutterbugs in our group. Even on the ride back he didn't seem to be overly concerned with having us back to our house by the official end time of our tour. I would totally and completely suggest J.O'Callaghans for any type of tour of the area!!

He made several stops along the way (one was the Cliffs of Moher), but pointed out castles, towers, major historical spots, giving us some history, and great stories of the Irish people past and present. He had a great sense of humor and kept our interest for the whole day! He was able to handle any "surprises" that came his way from the 26 passengers that were on the bus. The bus was clean and comfortable too! Book these guys! You won't be disappointed!!! Ian was a highlight to our trip to Ireland! Thank you, Ian!
