I was quite nervous due to not wanting to change much with my hair except keeping it's length and getting layers. Upon our arrival, Sam was so kind and accommodating. He made sure to make my best friend and I feel comfortable, made conversation with us, tried to get to know us, offered us tea and we got to learn about him as well. For my haircut, he made sure to listen to what I wanted and suggested some things that would look good in addition. He's probably the FIRST hairstylist who actually listened to me when I said I wanted to keep the length of my hair, but just wanted to add layers. Even though he trimmed an inch of the length, the end result of my hair was still pretty long and satisfactory. He gave my hair more life, which is exactly what I wanted. I came with my best friend, who had no intention of doing anything to her hair. She had a couple questions for him because she had some ideas of what she wanted to do to her hair in the future. Sam kindly answered them all and even managed to squeeze in a hair colouring appointment the same day, after she was convinced with his explanations of how her hair would end up looking. (She looked great at the end!) Overall, I think it's safe to speak for the both of us (my best friend and I) and say that our experience at Art's Hair Coiffure with Sam was definitely a great one & we're definitely going to come back in the future! :)

Even wrote down the haircut I wanted in French so there would not be any communication issues. They ruined my hair with layers when I did not ask for it. Not only did they ruin my hair with choppy layers but also the customer service is terrible ! I couldn't stop crying after my haircut and first visit and the owner Sam reached out to me asking for me to go visit again. He wanted to "fix" my haircut and I went on the same day as I appreciated the gesture. There was NO APOLOGY whatsoever . I got soaked in the rain the second time I went (as it was raining) . Sam started lecturing me on the fact that I'm young, my hair will grow back etc . They did not even offer some hot water or anything. There are two owners . One is a woman and the other is a man named Sam. The woman gave me a haircut and she chopped everything off! I said I did not want conditioner and she kept saying I need it. Also, I didn't want layers she gave me layers. I wrote it down in French, exactly the haircut I wanted but she refused to read it. Sam refused to apologize for any of this- my discomfort, the time I spent visiting them the horrible haircut. According to him, it was not horrible. They said I was lucky to get to sit on their chair. I never met such arrogant and self obsessed hair dressers. Never visit them again. Avoid at all cost if you care about your hair. Now I have a choppy cheap chair it. Sam didn't have a curve scissors to adjust the layers. They are not well educated in the hair space at all. Worst haircut of my life. It will take years before my hair grows back. Worst ever!!

She was asked to fade in my roots for a chocolate brown to dirty blonde transition (lighter ends already existing), but I believe there was a miscommunication -- she overshot the color, and I ended up walking away with near-black hair all over. It ruined the beautiful (and very expensive) light balayage that I had underneath and wanted to keep. I only took off one star however because the service was overall pretty nice, and I guess my hair is still now an improvement from my crazy roots.

I'm not from Montreal so I took a circuitous route to find the salon and happened to end up in the midst of riot police, burning barricades and protesters outside the Palais de Congres on my way there. The fact that this did not even come up in conversation I think says something about the calm atmosphere that prevails at Studio M & W! Nice salon touches include: - a very stylish knee-length black robe with pleated tie belt (worn underneath the clipping-catcher longer robe) - choice of fizzy or still water ... - ... which came on a platter cocoa-sprinkled with the stencilled monogram of the salon - fancy! And the cut? He expertly and precisely interpreted my need for an updating of my assymetric style into something "un peu plus boheme, un peu plus exageré" which is exactly what I got. And the proof of the pudding - my hair was admired by strangers not once but twice during my walk back to my flat!

When I arrived there, the receptionist told me that my appointment had been re-scheduled because the stylist who had been suggested to me BY THE SALON did not want to cut my hair if he couldn't do whatever he wanted to do. Just as well, since these "artists" rarely give a cut that doesn't require you to hire a live-in hairdresser to style your hair daily. I don't understand why they didn't call me back to tell me that my appointment was cancelled. I wasted a lot of time getting there, only to be reassigned to some "C" grade stylist. So I left.

It was my first time ever getting to enjoy a manicure spiff up while the dye was setting in my hair - so I ended up with both black hair and chic black nails. It was such an enjoyable glow up! My stylist was super sweet and gave me EXACTLY the hair colour and cut I wanted, which is, as many will know, not an easy thing to always achieve when you go to a new stylist. He listened carefully to everything I explained that I was looking for, and went out of his way to ensure that I got it! I even left with my specific dye recipe (which is kind of like a half-black, half dark brown mix) on a slip of paper, since he understood that I travel a lot and it would just make it so much easier to hand the recipe to my next stylist! I was so appreciative of that, because it's often hard to get a stylist to understand the kind of colour I'm looking for (surprisingly enough). Cut out the reddish, tone it down to a cool, deep, darkest brown bordering on black but not as unnatural looking as black. He nailed it. The next time I'm back in Montreal, this is where I will take myself immediately. The nail salon is next door, but they have a door between the hair salon and nail salon, so that your stylist can simply walk you through, with your towel on your head, sit you in a chair, and the manicurist knows exactly how much time there is to get your nails done before you have to go back over for your rinse. It's such a great working relationship. I was so happy with the manicure that I went back again for a redo a week and a half later! Fair warning, though - this salon IS in Westmount, the moneyed part of Montreal, so you will pay through the nose for your perfect salon experience. For me, it was worth it. A girl's gotta treat herself once in a while, and since I only typically hit a salon once every six months, I could justify it! Ha!

She always comes up with suggestion on how to make me look like I have more hair then I really do and always has interesting conversation. The support staff is also very nice, I'm always treated like I'm the most important person in the place and they are quick to offer up a drink once your hair has been washed or if you get there early and find yourself having to answer some email and read the paper. I like this place for the simple reason that I've been coming here for five years and even with the staff changes they manage to keep the experience and fun.
