Daughter and I did a stop and shop at the gallery on the last day of our stay. We enjoyed checking out the various offerings, and acquiring specific information on some of the offerings displayed. I had some purchasing thoughts in mind with this visit to the gallery -- gifts were to be for daughter and myself -- not to be Christmas gifts, but more like lasting remembrances of this pre-winter, and pre-holidays stay. I had taken care of Mom's gift earlier that day. When I saw what I thought each of us would like, daughter was asked to "leave", and purchases arranged -- then I caught up with her for more walkabout, and dropped back later for pick up. Everything, including the earlier purchase, was kept under wraps and hidden from any peaks during the rest of our stay. My purchases: - for daughter: 'Crystalline Glazed Porcelain Vase' - by Holly McKeen, Studio Potter, at Greendale Pottery, Chilliwack, BC. - for me: 'Blown Glass Figurine - Polar Bear' - by Daniel Vargas, Maestro glass blower, at Arte Vargas studio/gallery, Maple Ridge, BC. A most-enjoyable visit to CanWest Gallery -- with some lovely purchases, to-be lasting-memories of our stay, coming home with us. During our most recent stay (of a few days/nights, late-May/14), dropping into Island Gifts was a much-enjoyed stop during my early-morning walkabouts. Unlike most shops in Harrison, it opens at 9:30am ... perfect for me, as I'm 'up, out, and about' rather early (and especially so for Harrison!!), and could conclude my various 'within' the village walkabouts with a stop there. It is geared to the tourists in town looking to catch something to take home to remember their stay, or small gifts to remember family or friends. There's a wide selection of offerings at all price points -- from very inexpensive, to not so, and a whole range in-between. And that includes a great selection of art cards by local, BC artist Sue Coleman. It's a fun place to drop in, take a look around, share some stories during your browsing, and whether you leave with a purchase or not, you can take home some fond memories of your stay in Harrison. And then came back with Mom the next day, so she could finally have the opportunity of meeting/chatting with the owner, and seeing her fine shop and offerings, and witnessing her wonderful artistic talents. It was another opportunity for us to see and chat with 'Cindy' (owner/artist), about her current displays, recent restorations, new creations, and some of her future plans, thoughts, and all. Several offerings caught our attention this time, but especially, a large, writing/art-working desk display, and several pieces of furniture she had restored since our last visit. We sure enjoyed seeing the very artistic, creative, and lovely makeovers she had completed with each (desk, side/lamp table, large cabinet, and bureau). Fine pieces, that will make lovely additions to someone's home, studio, or the like. These works, and some others, gave us the opportunity to see a little of what she has been doing, and how she has been experimenting with the 'FAT' brand of paints, and other products, she carries and sells in her shop. We so-enjoyed these visits to 'Le Shed'. With its lovely proprietor, and cool displays of "old things, vintage, and odds & ends" stuff -- for us, a 'must-do' stop in downtown Hope.

For example: the brown tips on the Azalea is environmental, likely wind burn and not a bug that I need to spray. The staff is knowledgeable, polite and professional. I always feel good about buying my plants and summer flowers there because I know that they are well taken care of and are not 'stressed' like they are at the box stores. The best part is that most of the time you can see Brian Minter there. I love listening to him on CBC. He too is very helpful and is more than willing to advise on plants, solutions for pest control or how and when to fertilize. It is wonderful to have such an amazing resource in our community. I think we are truly blessed. The little cafe there is also a great addition. Before shopping you can enjoy a sandwich, or just grab a coffee. This year I am going to be growing in raised bed gardens and have gotten all of my Fragro herbs at Minters. I am also seeding poppies on my property, and was able to find California, Oriental and a hybrid. So that is wonderful. Great selection of women's clothing, gifts, cut flower department, cafe, tropical plants, seasonal plants, herbs, vegetables, landscaping perennials, annuals, tools, pots, trees and so much more. Last summer the tomatoes that grew on my deck where 10 feet tall. I had asked one of the staff which ones to buy, and I grew 7 different varieties. The produced wonderfully, and it was cool to grow heirloom plants. I will post some photos of the plants from last summer. Thanks again Brian, you have a great hub for the community.
