As someone who once owned a secondhand bookstore, I can say that the Book Man has an excellent selection of books. The staff are very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They are willing to help people find books they are looking for. On occasion, a staff member has called me a year after I have made an inquiry about a book, to notify me that the store was finally in possession of the title. I was only able to stop briefly at The Book Man towards the end of a day trip to the Fraser Valley but loved everything I had first read online about this location then saw in person. The store, although packed with delights, was so well and simply organized that it was not overwhelming and easy to peruse through. A cute nook at the front for children's books and toys that felt like it's own little room. Rows of books organized in all types of sections including one with Totoro/Miyazaki books ( a favorite of my niece's). A selection of records and inexpensive paperbacks towards the back. A small glass display shelf with gifts including some gorgeous crystal crowns. I especially liked the little extras I had noticed. I had come to see the murals in town which had a chance too see a few behind the shop where I also saw their cute, little free library. The staff although busy, made sure to greet and assist quickly with any questions. When I have more time next time I'm in the area, I will make sure to visit again, meet their store cat, drop of some books from my collection and purchase some treats to either add back to mine or gift out. read more

First off, I was a professional bookseller for 25 years and I've visited everywhere from Shakespeare and Company in Paris to Powell's in Portland. I'm not mentioning this to show off but impress you with the fact that I know a little something about bookstores so you believe me when I tell you how awesome this bookstore is!!! It's truly one of of the best bookshops anywhere. The store is huge and well laid out, it's mostly used but there's new stock scattered around as well. I've been twice now and have barely scratched the surface. My girls loved the large area devoted to both Harry Potter books and merchandise and they picked up some unique and inexpensive pins. I love the huge collection of sci-fi, the dedicated beats section, literary biographies and the classics section. The prices here are definitely on the low side, I found a near perfect Folio Society edition of a John Buchan short story collection for only $10!!! I love re-reading the Harry Harrison books I enjoyed as a kid and they had a ton for under $5 each! Plus they have a store cat and a amazing bathroom wallpapered in bookstore bookmarks! Not just worth visiting if you're in town. This store is worth a dedicated visit to Chikkiwack. read more

My favorite used bookstore. Such a wonderful selection. Staff is just great. So friendly and very knowledgable. If you visit their website you can put in book requests and they'll get back to you as soon as they can. Which is usally in a couple of days. They keep your list of what you're looking for and will email or call you to let you know if your book is in. If you need to hold your books a bit longer, they have no problem doing that. I probably drive them crazy with all my requests and questions. But they're always to awesome and patient with me. I really appreciate that. This place really knows what customer service is. Love this store- TONS of books to choose from and very helpful staff members!! However if you are looking for cheap books the books here are not that cheap- about half the cover price and for some not in great condition. On our way through the area recently, my honey suggested we stop and visit The Bookman. I was impressed. Great selection - well stocked, neat and organised selection of everything. And by everything I do mean everything. Found some Korean language books for my daughter - which are surprisingly hard to find in BC. Also got her some photography reference books. Added to my ever growing collection of fiction. Wally Lamb, Lisa Moore, to name a few. They have a great selection of periodicals, Canadiana, used records (Hold Me Back!!!) and much much more. Even though we spent an hour in the store I think I could spend much more time in there. Worth a trip - and don't worry about them not being open - they are open 364 days a year. If you are in the area and don't stop for a visit, you need your head checked. Too bad they don't also sell bookcases, because I need more. All I can say is holy cow they have a lot of books! I don't think I have ever left there without buying something. Great selection, helpful staff, always have to give the kitties a scratch when I see them. I usually have to make myself leave there otherwise I'd just be browsing for hours. This place was a pleasant surprise. I'm a scifi fan, and their scifi / fantasy section takes up an entire wall in the store. I like the "token jars" where you make a donation if you don't take a plastic bag. Their mystery section, kids section, and classics section are all amazing. Unfortunately, I didn't like their cookbook section -- it's not easy to navigate and they sort the books in a lot of weird ways (by country, by type of food, and by author). Unlike the scifi section, the titles they carry look really old-school. So if you're searching for a particular author, you can't just find their name in the stacks... They have another store in Abbotsford, but their website doesn't distinguish between the 2 stores -- so you might want to call ahead to confirm they'll actually have the book you saw online. The store is clean, cozy and inviting. I love the fact that The Book Man promotes local authors by having them do readings. It's so nice to meet the authors and get their book signed. Reading books to me is like finding long lost family or friends, the Book Man book store feels like home. The store is filled with many genres of books new and loved (used) as well unique gifts such as T-shirts for book-lovers, coloring books for every walk of life, journals and of course bookmarks. The staff are busy but never too busy for a question or to look at books you want to trade in for credit. The price with the credit given on books brought in, I must admit it gives me the joy of buying more books than I can keep up with. My favorite section to go to is the First Nations, Children's picture books, Contemporary Fiction as well as Nature and Local Authors. If you need to fill your need to read the Book Man is the perfect place to go, sit with their resident cat, chat with other lover of books or escape to the bookshelves calling your name. You will feel good shopping at The Book Man knowing that if you don't use a bag or bring in your own bag for your purchase you are given a token in place of the plastic bag to put into a choice of 3 jars where the money of the cost of the plastic bag will go to 1 of 3 local charities. read more
