Eclipse Bookstore is a labor of love and a book lovers dream! Walking in the front door I immediately felt overwhelmed. As I started to get the lay of the land and found "my section", I was amazed at the number of books from my list of TBR that I found. Books are in great condition. You can tell the owner is picky and takes pride on what he resells. I became immersed in the treasure hunt and found myself not wanting to leave. Good thing I came in about an hour before close. The selection and collection of used books in every genre, including those you didn't know existed, is by far the best I've found. The owner definitely knows his inventory, dont be shy about engaging him for help. Take note, shop is closed Wed and Thurs.If you need a buy new book fix, walk the street a block and you'll find 3 floors to peruse at Vintage Books. The bookstore is absolutely overflowing and that makes it an aesthetic dream but a little bit of a nightmare to find what you want. The sections were not clearly labeled but once I was able to find sections of my interest it was fun to browse and find some gems. read more

So many of the reviews about Eclipse mention the lack of organization. Let me share a true story that showcases "knowing your inventory ". Several years ago I was in search of a copy of "Kitchen Confidential", by Anthony Bourdain. So off I went to Eclipse. I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't have time to spend browsing. Seeing the owner surrounded by stacks of books at what I think was the checkout counter (I was unable to see the cash register - it was concealed by books). I approached, dodging other piles of books covering the floor. As I got closer, the gentleman looked up and nodded, flashing a friendly smile. I asked if he had my desired book. Without speaking, he turned slightly to his left and using both hands lifted the top seven books off a nearby tall stack. He looked back at me and said, "Your book is the one on the top". I was speechless. I have returned to Eclipse on numerous occasions and the polite gentleman never ceases to amaze me with his "inventory knowledge". This bookstore is truly a one-of-a-kind treasure. DAMN do I want to give this five stars. So badly. I made a special trip out here from Seattle on my day off. Simply because I wanted to visit this amazing store.. just look at some of the pictures.. amazing! You will be overjoyed and overwhelmed at the endless shelves and stacks of books everywhere. A book lovers dream! There is something about stacks of books on the floor.. EVERYwhere on the floor that is so satisfying. You can get lost in a store like this. Unfortunately that is also the downfall of this place if you are looking for something specific. I went in with a bucket list of maybe six books and could not find any of them. I am certain that at least half of my list wasn't there since I did find the author's location on the shelves.. but it is not organized in the best of ways. For example, there is no section dedicated to biographies. If you want a biography, it is categorized under "subject" but even then I think it is hard to find anything. The woman working was very nice in trying to guide me in the right direction; lots of the biographies she seemed to know for sure would be under US History (generals, presidents, etc) but there was another section for literary biographies.. anyway, it was confusing. The shelves and sections are labeled poorly (if at all) so you will end up wandering whether you want to or not. Perhaps that is the upswing of this place.. it is fantastic for drowning out the outside world and getting lost in books and books. Two floors of floor to ceiling books! Lots of mass market paperbacks one floor down. I think the more popular items will be hard to find... but I found myself a gem of a book! Just as I was about to give up! Items are very reasonably priced. I think it's worth the journey. After all, Eclipse did make the PNW section of a trivial Buzzfeed article on 44 Great American Independent Bookstores....... read more

I first went into this bookstore back in December, 2015, and I walked in at 11:05 am. The owner wouldn't even look at my books. A couple of weeks later, I made sure I got there BEFORE 11:00 am and the owner looked over the 5 boxes of books I brought and took the equivalent of 1 box for $25. He then told me I could come back anytime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. I haven't gone back and I will be giving the rest of my books to Goodwill. I am REALLY tired of the arrogant "hipper than thou" attitude I get in Bellingham and Fairhaven. This includes Henderson Books too, BTW. read more

Piles and piles of books greet the visitor to Eclipse Books. The owner sits behind a counter behind a wall of books and peruses an art book while playing old school singer songwriter folk music. Don't be fooled by the disarray. This place is like an English garden. Piles have themes; they are tidy and stable. There is order in the chaos, and that order holds a huge array of reasonably priced books. My particular obsession, art books, was salved by a really interesting and quirky selection. The academic writing on art was much more complete than most places. The monographs are not overpopulated by overpriced black and white editions, although there were a few. All it took was to question the owner about a recommendation and he knew exactly where to guide me. I told him I was a Raymond Chandler fan and he made a few suggestions. I love coming here. The gentleman that works there is always so fun to talk with and grateful for your stop in. The shelves are just packed with so many different kinds and ages and styles of books. The prices are of course wonderful and fair and you can really find some gems in there along with all the other great books. The staircase is beautiful and fun and the lower level has a great view. I dislike the reviews some of the people have posted here. Owning a bookstore these days is DIFFICULT and I commend the owner for keeping the shop open for those of us who still like books. To the guy whining about hippies in Fairhaven - go home and order from Amazon. And yes I would be mad if someone was parking outside the store too and not visiting the store. I tried to drop off some books and had to park down the street. He, the owner, has to pay the rent and the taxes. So come on, give the guy a break. Where I live most of our bookshops have been closed down so I am glad he is there. And YES he has to be picky! If he wasnt, then there would be no room for new stock. In Mount Vernon, Wa, the lady who owns the second hand bookshop will not accept books - simply does trades and it sounded like she was going to do me a "big favor" by glancing at the books I had for sale. Books are becoming obsolete - so please people, more tolerance for those who are still trying to make a living at it! read more

While this bookstore is seriously disorganized (e.g. stacks and stacks of books on the ground), that is also part of it's charm. While there are other bookstores in Bellingham (and trust me, when I visit each one receives a visit) this is one of my favorites for used books. I usually end up taking at least one really great book home each time I stop in. read more

The only reason for the two star review was that when I went in looking for a book the woman working was really condescending about how I skewed the pronunciation of Henry David Thoreau. Whenever I'm in Bellingham, I visit three used bookstores--Michael's Books and Henderson Books on opposite ends of Grand Ave. in downtown Bellingham, and Eclipse Books in Fairhaven. They are all good, but Michael's Books is my favorite, with Henderson Books second and Eclipse Books third. Eclipse is a classic chaos of a used bookstore. There are unshelved stacks of books everywhere. Shelves stretch high overhead. There is small first floor where you enter and then a staircase down to the cellar (dungeon). There is organization by section, and alphabetization within section, but it's not always precise and you do need to check the stacks sitting in front of sections if you're looking for something specific. There is a fun, treasure hunt feel to this bookstore, but if you come in with a list of specific books to find, it will be a time-consuming endeavor to find them. read more

Dave, the owner, has an outstanding knowledge of his inventory. If you're looking for the out-of-print novel or poetry, or for the hard-to-find book, start your search here. I love the wall-to-wall rows of books, and the floor to ceiling stacks. The shop looks like what a bookstore should look like. This is not a prim and proper, orderly shop, and that's part of its charm. With this ambiance, they could film the bookstore scene of a movie here. In fact, they have everything except for a cat who meets you at the door. But I think that only happens in movies anyway. read more
