Running through the heart of Utrecht, the Oude Gracht ('old canal') is the major artery of the…read morecity. It's lined with many shops at street level and bars and restaurants at the level below. It also hosts a weekly flower market on Saturday morning. Yes, it can get a tiny bit seedy at night with rowdy students ('bralapen') and it isn't always as clean as one would like, but this all adds to the charm. It's truly a wonderful place to hang out any time of day or year. The oude gracht was built in the 1100's by upgrading and taming a former branch of the River Rhine. The mooring level (accessible by steep steps from road level), where goods would be loaded and unloaded, gives access to deep tombs / caverns that extend below the road and under the shops above. In the old days used for storage, they have now mostly been transformed into bars and eateries. It's hard to miss the oude gracht when you're in Utrecht as many of the city's landmarks, including the Dom tower / church and various museums are located close by. Enjoy this place. It's awesome. But, be careful of bicyclists as you stroll around; you'll likely have your eyes on façades or the water below!

The museum hall has a good collection…read moreof steam trains but they allow you to roam around all the engines in their shunting yard, meaning you can get up close to the trains and carriages. The collection itself is a little smaller than the railway museum in York but being able to ramble around the actual tracks is a real bonus. Worth a visit.

Don't forget to check out the trains parked outside. The rides: There are about 4 rides, but only the roller coaster may be a little too scary for kids under 6 years of age. I recommend parents check out the rides first. The gift shop : Has a huge selection of train related merchandise for both kids and adults. The restaurant : Has a pretty large menu and is reasonably priced. The toilets: Are free to use with admission. Overall, highly recommend!

There's really too much to mention- suffice it to say there are paintings, reliquaries, precious objects, textiles, statues, altar screens, movies of historic catholic celebrations- and so much more. It's a tremendous pleasure to visit a gem like this. My favorite pieces? The amazing Monstrans by the local Utrecht silversmiths and the wonderful portrait of Erasmus.

The serenity in busy Utrecht is wonderful. I would like to see more of the gardens in better weather. The neighborhood is worth exploring further, Vaartsje Rijn with a new train station. They do provide free lockers and the bathrooms were clean since we had the opening time reservations. We only spend about 20 minutes total here walking through all the cute rooms. Their gift shop is across the way at Central Museum. There's a cafe behind the Central Museum, and also 2 more Miffy statues outside the cafe.

They had Utrecht cookies, made in Utrecht- and they are delicious. I was supposed to bring them home, but instead I ended up eating them all the night before my flight. They're fantastic. I'm just hoping I can find them in the US. I'm including a picture of them. They'd make a wonderful, unusual gift for people (if you can refrain from eating them all yourself.) The women in the shop were very friendly and helpful and they offered to wrap my cookies if they were a present.

I had no preconception about Aboriginal art, since I knew nothing about it. This place has a short film which greatly expanded my knowledge. It turns out I love Aboriginal Art (the stuff on the 2nd floor- not the more modern "city" art. The art is gorgeous. The colors are so vivid and alive. It isn't cheap- adults are 9 Euro, kids are 5. We had the Museum pass so we had free entry- I'm not sure I would have paid 9 Euro for this (or would have been happy if I had paid 9 Euro). I am including some pictures from the collection- so you can see what I mean about the vividness of the art.
