Great municipal museum that is still recovering from the 2020 earthquake. Check website for limited tours. Can't wait for their reopening!

This review is actually for the Museo de la Musicà just down the street. We visited 6/28/2018 1. Due to budget constraints from the recovery effort of Maria there are currently only 2 official tour guides in the town of Poncé to cover their four museums. This means that 2-3 of them are closed most of the days to save on operating costs. 2. If you want to visit any of the museums in Poncé it would be wise to call ahead and setup a time and day so you can be sure that their is a guide available to let you in, show you around and give you a good tour. Also, there isn't any A/c so be sure to wear cool clothing and bring a rag or fan to help you stay cool in the summer months. 3. The Music Museum in Poncé is terrific and, if you are fortunate enough to land Mr. Rodriguez as your guide, you will be truly edifies by the boys of knowledge he will share with you. 4. Be certain to stay to the end of the tour where you will get to see (IMO) the finest collection of PR Quatros assembled in one room by the foremost artist and PR craftsman Carmelo Martéll. 5. If you can, ask to see the courtyard. It is amazing and they would like to start utilizing it fore music events and play productions. -Don't walk through the ground brush though, it has tons of sticky burs. However, you may find a mango or passion fruit if yer lucky. We considered this the "gift shop". read more

Wait, what? Someone on here called it a "quaint little museum with a delightful little collection" (but) "not worth the trip from San Juan" and over-hyped? Do you mean this world-class museum boasting over 4500 pieces, bridging old and new world collections including European masters like El Greco, Rubens and Goya, among others? Recognized as the largest art museum in the Caribbean and the largest collection of Pre-Rafaelite and Italian Baroque pieces in all of Latin America? She said it could be seen in 2 hours (on roller skates, no doubt). This, regrettably, needs to be called out. It's not accurate and it's frankly embarrassing to see my fellow mainlander denigrate anything they experience in the Latin World because they insist on projecting their banana republic paradigm on them. As someone who studied art history at NYU and has been enthralled by many of the major museums around the world, I just had to call this out. Enjoy the impressive and proud collection of the Museo de Arte de Ponce. Unless you're interested in traveling with blinders on and completely uninterested in doing some basic research into the proud history of peoples of whom you have next to no basic knowledge, you will NOT be in the least disappointed. read more

Just went here today. It takes 1.5 hours to get here from San Juan, but the drive is well worth it. The design of the museum is all white mostly, hexagon shaped, and very modern with clean lines. Paintings were beautiful - mostly fine art but there were a few "modern" pieces. There is also a nice garden outside I believe modeled after the garden in Granada, Spain. And lastly, there is a nice little cafe serving various hot sandwiches and coffees/juices. Highly recommended if visiting Ponce, PR!! read more

This is a beautiful little museum well worth a visit for anyone passing through Ponce. The museum is small enough to walk through in under two hours and has pieces from the 16th century to contemporary times. The galleries are light and airy and there is even a little cafe that you can enjoy a coffee at afterwards. read more

Charming little art museum with a delightful collection. It takes about 2 hours to do the whole thing right. The special exhibition was worth the extra few dollars, as it was fascinating and very well-curated. I felt the museum as a whole was a bit heavy on early European religious art, but they do their best with what they have and the first floor galleries are excellent. They also have a very interesting exhibition on race and work in art that could be especially good if you're bringing children. Overall, perhaps not as worth the trip from San Juan as it was hyped to be, but a very enjoyable time. read more

We have visited museums all over the world including Florence and Paris and were very impressed with this sophisticated and wonderful display of art. Our tour guide Yasmine was passionate and exceptional at weaving history and the art pieces to create a beautiful experience. Take note of the way the art showcases the evolution of Puerto Rico from agriculture to its own industrial revolution, at an obvious cost in shaping the future. You should also consider how the art and history brings attention to the current political situation in Puerto Rico. Should Puerto Rico remain a US Territory as it has been since acquired from Spain in 1898, or should it be a US state? Or even an independent country? Great questions for debate with art as the catalyst as you view the beautiful museum created by Luis Ferre. read more

Love the muesum. Love the info on the pics the lady did. My favorite was the art of 16th to 17th century people. And the garden of queen isballa. Art not my favorite thing. But I do like looking at it. The bad thing it was cold in there. And I loved the pics of puerto from the person who founded it in the 60s read more

What a surprise it was to come across such a lovely Museum. El Museo de Arte de Ponce is a beautiful jewel waiting to be discovered in Ponce a municipality in Puerto Rico. The building has three floors and art to cover every wall and hallway in it. The exhibits are well curated and thought about to create the best flow and ambiance thru the exploration of the pieces. The themes range from neoclassic to modern interpretative pieces that describe the current state of the country. Intelligent and thought provoking it was worth the rental car for the drive from San Juan to Ponce. The drive itself is a wonderful treat. read more

A jewel of the Caribbean! An outstanding collection in a gracious building. Staff is lovely - we took a tour with Francine (?) and she was so good we came back the next day to take another tour with Edwin and get a second perspective. They are great communicators and justifiably proud of their collection. Even the young lady at the admissions desk and the guards are notably hospitable. I happened to be reading Sonia Sotomayor's autobiography where she describes being amazed by this art as a little girl. No doubt! Hope to be back soon. read more

What a pleasant surprise to come across this museum...definitely a must visit in PR

While working at an Investment Bank in NY, a client recommended I take time during my family visit to go to this Museum. It was fantastic! I am so glad I went, and am over due for another visit. Back in 2002, the one I remember the most is "Flaming June," I was in awe, such beautiful paintings, captured on my camera no flash.
