The Musei Vaticani, or Vatican Museum, is a labyrinth of ART-ifacts. We purchased tickets (20€/adult) in advanced for a timed entry. Don't be tricked by the skip the line tickets, they're just re-selling you the timed entry tickets. Also tour groups did not seem to have any advantages, and at time were stuck to the spots the tour guides wanted to tell you more about. Bring your passport! Luckily I had my passport on hand because they wanted to confirm at least one passport with the names on the tickets. We came at an early time and it was already crowded. Seems like the crowds are inevitable here. The Vatican Museum houses an extensive collection of art, with most of the art being religious. The museum has collections and artifacts from ancient Rome, Egypt and early civilizations. Don't forget to look up at the ceiling. All of the ceilings have intricate designs of their own. My boyfriend joked that it hurt his neck to have to constantly look up the whole time. I thought it was also interesting that they would even display the art in its' broken form, and not as restored as other museums would. The main beloved piece of work here is the Sistine Chapel. However the space is extremely crowded, making it hard to fully enjoy. The feeling of being inside the Vatican museum is like being in a can of sardines. We came on a weekday, first thing in the morning, and yet there was no relief to the crowd. There were also some sus people who were touching everything. I thought that was disrespectful to ancient relics... but there wasn't any staff around to stop them.
No visit to Rome would be complete without a stopover to Vatican City. Situated on the banks of the Tiber River, sprawling over 109 acres within a 2-mile border, the Vatican is forever associated with the Catholic Church and began with the construction of a basilica over St. Peter's grave in Rome in the 4th century A.D. The name Vaticanus traces its etymology back to the word "vaticinium," which means "oracle," since many psychics used to occupy the place during the Roman Classical Antiquity. Millions of tourists make their way to the world's smallest independent city-state each year, whether they be devout pilgrims, art enthusiasts, history buffs, or just hopelessly curious. No passports required! Founded under the papacy of Clement XIV in the middle of the 18th century, the Vatican Museums were established to display the extensive papal collection, where my partner, our friends, family member, and I came in mid-September as first-timers. Reservations were easily made at the Vatican official website for 6 persons at the 8:30am tour, which we were lucky to get and was reasonably priced. On the day of the tour, don't arrive too early like us. The tickets were timed, and we had to step off the line until 30 minutes beforehand. After going through security, which did not take too long, we were on our way to pick up our audio headset and enjoyed the art and history deemed awe-inspiring. With thousands of people, one is herded through miles of long, huge, and spacious corridors, everyone inching along towards the prize of the Sistine Chapel. Our guide, to Michaela's credit, tried to point out and describe certain artworks. However, the art one's passing is almost impossible to see due to the incredible multitude of people. The route back was much less crowded, as most seem to go on to St. Peter's Basilica right from the Chapel. What an incredible experience, which we can recommend.
This place is a must see when you're in Rome! We came here specifically to see the famed Sistine Chapel but the journey towards it was full of art, culture, and history. It is definitely crowded but worth it. Be reminded of the dress code (modest, shoulders and knees covered) and be alert of signs and regulations because certains areas don't allow photography. Then, prepare for the journey of a lifetime!
Loved, loved this museum! Get the skip the line tickets- it's definitely worth it. Each room you walked through kept getting more and more beautiful- from Egyptian artifacts to Greek and Roman art. My favorite parts were seeing the papal vehicles/ carriages and the Sistine Chapel of course. There's also a little cafe here (although a little pricy). I wish I had been able to do the garden tour, but just seeing part of the gardens from above was amazing. It was crowded for sure (Friday during late July) and a lot of rooms only had the windows open or some fans for ventilation. It took me several hours to see everything (be prepared to walk several miles through the museum) and I felt like I could've spent more time reading through things at the end. If you are a lover of art, the vatican museums are a must. While the majority is incredible Renaissance art, there are sections with Egyptian art and contemporary art. It's really quite amazing to see all of the frescos and imagine what it was like for Michaelangelo and Raphael and all the others painting so masterfully on high ceilings and walls. We have been here a couple of times before on our own, but this was the first time we had a tour guide, and I'm so glad we did. While I really like roaming around on my own, we learned so much that we wouldn't have otherwise. For instance, I did not know that after Michaelangelo's death, the council of Trent hired a painter to strategically paint drapes and fig leafs on the nudes in the Sistine Chapel, as apparently there was too much nakedness. The downside to these museums are the crowds and the lack of air conditioning in some galleries. It was sweltering in some. If you are planning on a visit here, I cannot stress to you enough to purchase tickets in advance. We were able to walk by the line (which we overheard was approximately 3 and a half hours long--just to buy tickets) and go right in.
Been fortunate to been here a couple times now Similar yet different experiences First time the line was super long around the Vatican walls outside but time things moved quickly yet still busy It can get warm with all the people and sometimes it bottle necks which is normal given everyone what's the picture or view Getting to the main Sistine chapel they make you work for it and even though it takes a loooong time for you to get in when you do it's worth it! The legendary spiral staircase that leads you out and feeling and seeing so much history not just from a religious standpoint but just for the country in general A must visit in Rome
Conclave. A papal conclave is a gathering of the College of Cardinals to appoint a new pope. So interesting to visit the Vatican during the Conclave. Even though the Sistine Chapel was closed, we still were able to see a lot on our guided tour of the Vatican Museum. Check in was easy. Nice to be able to skip the line. Booked a guided tour in English directly from the Vatican Museum for 40 Euros. Our tour guide, Erik, was a professor from Atlanta who has been working at a university in Rome for the past two decades. So lucky to get so much information on our tour. The Vatican Museum is filled with so many treasures. The museum was founded with a single piece. Laocoon and His Sons was found in 1506 by a farmer. This was collected by Pope Julius II on the recommendation of Michelangelo and became the piece that led to the Vatican Museum. Since then, so many priceless objects have been collected. The Bathtub of Nero. The Pinecone Courtyard. The Bronze Statue of Hercules. The Sarcophagus of Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine. The statue of Antinoos, the lover of Emperor Hadrian. Masterpieces by Leonardo DaVinci, Chagall, Van Gogh. Greek, Roman and Egyptian artifacts. Amazing. The Belvedere Torso inspired Michelangelo. He often visited this statue to explore the body in motion. This was important as models were expensive, and it was against the rules of the church to dissect cadavers. He used it as a reference when painting the Sistine Chapel, Apollo Belvedere was another Roman statue that Michelangelo used as inspiration for his art. In The Last Judgement, the face of Jesus shows a striking resemblance to the Apollo Belvedere. The Gallery of Maps is amazing. It maps all areas of Italy. The School of Athens by Raphael is truly a high Renaissance masterpiece. So much packed into the huge fresco. It shows a collection of the world's greatest philosophers, scientists and mathematicians gathered to represent the power of human knowledge. Check out the self portrait of Raphael and the portrait of Michelangelo as an artistic jab between rivals. Tip: Book your tour directly with the museum. The skip the line is a great time saver. Keep your knees and shoulders covered. Go to St. Peter's Basilica after exploring the museum and exiting though the Bramante Staircase. Such a great place to explore, the Vatican Museum with or without the Sistine Chapel being open is stunning. #2400
It would be criminal to come to Rome and not visit the Vatican. My first time here was 17 years ago during the summer and all I remember is that it was so hot. My clothes felt like it was sticking to my person. This was my fourth visit to Italy and second time here. This time around it was still unbelievably hot, but we're older and wiser so our tickets let us cut to the front of the line. And because we had a stroller, they let us cut through everyone else. Make sure you bring a form of identification because they do in fact check when you go through security. They make sure the name on the ticket matches with the ID. The entrance can be a little chaotic. The amount of tourists trying to get in seem endless. Unless you have the time to waste by standing in line to get in, I highly recommend buying skip the line tickets so that all you need to do is get to the front of the line when you get there for the time slot you signed up for. The earlier, the better. Once inside, the biggest challenge are the stairs. They never end. We were constantly having to carry the stroller by holding on to every corner so it wouldn't be too heavy. Much like the last time I was amazed at everything that I saw. The opulence. The grandeur. But boy are you packed like sardines with everyone else. We got so many steps in admiring all the things. Before leaving, we stopped by the cafe right in the middle of the garden for a quick snack. There's lots to see here I'd probably come back the next time I'm in Rome.
I had heard that you trudged through endless galleries before the Sistine Chapel. And that's right. You do. That said, it's like the history of western art: Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek, Roman .... Even modern art by Rivera and others. It is really impressive. The Sistine chapel itself is mesmerizing. Guards will guide you to the center to stare but there are benches on the outside. Binoculars are allowed; photography of any kind is not. Also there are clean bathrooms with both toilet paper as well as toilet seats. And double also, there are many food options at the end including a pizzeria, cafeteria and restaurant.
Book tickets in advance if you plan on coming here. We arrived early and had to wait before being allowed to enter. There are several long lines. Once inside, the experience was not great. It was overly crowded and I felt slightly claustrophobic as we were herded from room to room. Toward the end, you finally get to the Sistine Chapel.
Make sure to reserve your tickets in advance! We came by for 1:30pm in August and it was so so crowded. Not all the rooms have air conditioning, and there were just so many people everywhere - even on the line waiting to get inside. It's a short walk from the metro station including a flight of stairs up. I reserved the audio guide which included a self guided map. Maybe I'll do a tour next time.
The Vatican City, specifically the Musei Vaticani, was one of the top places on my list to visit while I was in Roma. Growing up Catholic, this is pretty much the mecca of the religion so I couldn't leave without seeing it. It made the most sense to book the museum while visiting Vatican City, so I made plans and then we made our way over during our second day in Roma. The Musei Vaticani are a collection of multiple museums within the Vatican City - there are several packages you can purchase via the official website, and I went with the one that gave us access to the gardens and all the museums - including the Sistine Chapel. I recommend purchasing tickets in advance, especially if you come during the high tourist seasons. After entry we were led straight through to the main outdoor plaza which had loads of photo ops of the gardens. Surrounding us were the museums, each containing art and exhibits from around the world and different time periods. There are honestly so many museums one could spend hours exploring. We eventually wanted to make our way to the Sistine Chapel which is conveniently the final attraction point before the museum exit. It's a relatively lengthy walk to get there, however along the way there are multiple mini museums where we stopped to take in the culture. This was my favorite part of my visit as the ornateness of the interiors were magnificent. After living my best Catholic life in the Sistine Chapel we made a pit stop at the gift shop and then exited. Overall, well worth the trip over - there's so much art and history compacted into a relatively small space. I admit it may be a little daunting to get through, but I definitely recommend taking the time to explore.

This museum will take at least half a day to go through, and it is well worth every minute. You could easily take all day however, depending on what type of museum goer you are. We spent a good 30 minutes just looking at the Sistine Chapel. The museum is for the most part easy to follow. The maps they provide are not the best, and we ended up having to trust our feet and move through as best we could. The halls are magnificent with the floors, the walls, and the ceilings are all magnificent and important in their artistic value. We had audio guides which suited us well in the Sistine Chapel, but not really for the rest of the museum. I would not have wanted to be in a tour group. They are massive, and that would make for taking photos, and going at your own pace impossible. They are good for giving you that detailed information you would have to go out of your way to know otherwise. The tours looked to be done well, where everyone gets ear pieces so that they can easily hear the guide without the guide having to yell. Speaking of people, the crowds were thick. Tourist fatigue and tourist rage is not uncommon here as you try to navigate among them. We also went in September though, which is prime tourist season. We bought our tickets online ahead of time and didn't have to go through any lines. STAY AWAY from the touts that litter the path to the museum entrance. Everything they say is a lie. They will make promises that you can meet the Pope, or skip lines with them, and it's all a lie. Don't miss the Vatican spiral stairwell. It will be at the end of your visit, and we almost existed the wrong way, which would have made us miss the staircase. read more

If you're in Rome, it's a must that you go and visit the Vatican Museum. BE SURE TO BUY THE SKIP THE LINE TICKETS to avoid having to wait in line for 3-4 hours. We bought the skip the line tickets with a guided tour and walked right past that dreaded line that was not moving AT ALL. I believe the skip the line tickets were maybe 10-16 euros more, but either way it's worth your sanity to just pay a little more. So many wonderful things to see in this place. I won't share pics so that it'll be a surprise to you when you go for yourself! Be prepared to spend close to half a day visiting the Vatican. Just go already! read more

This place houses some amazing works of art from history. Do not go unless you have a ticket to skip the line. Seriously! The line was blocks long, and hours to wait. Get some sort of audio guide, or tour. It's worth it unless you know about the pieces, because instead of just seeing the works, you can get some real history and appreciation. Parts of it get crazy packed full of people, but it's a big deal, so just expect it and deal with it. Take in the views, don't just rush through. The Sistine Chapel is gorgeous, and you should also have some sort of guide for it. Also look for Raphael in his pieces. read more
This place is amazing. The size, and variety, of the collection is nothing more than mind blowing. In fact you will find artifacts not only from the Greco-Roman era but also from as far back as the Babylonian and the Assyrian empires right up to the Renaissance and beyond. Not only that but they have a huge number of statues, paintings, and other works or art as well as some lovely gardens to wander around in. You actually get to the Sistine Chapel by going through the museum, but be careful because there are short cuts, and if you take them you can't actually go back because, well, this is a one way museum, which mean that I ended up missing out on all of Rafeal's works, which is a shame, particularly since the School of Athens is located here. Anyway, take your time, and definitely don't rush to attempt to get to the Sistine chapel as you may find yourself missing out on seeing some real treasures. read more

The most diverse and robust art collection I have ever seen. The Vatican has an array of museums, all being incredibly interesting and impressive. Tip: I recommend paying extra for skip the line tickets, the line was unreal. Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, the security enforces that rule. read more

I hate to give a halfhearted review but the experience left me cold. The way the museum is set up is more liije a cattle haul, you get pushed through to the next viewing area and can't really experience the museum at your own pace. Sistine Chapel was beautiful but very crowded and no room to really step back and appreciate the work. Nice contemporary pieces dotted throughout the historical items. Overall I would skip the muSeum and do the short version and go straight to the chapell. Look for the signs to do that. Must see for Rome. read more

TL;DR - Plenty to see, worth a visit. Let's start this review by saying I am not an 'Artsy' person at all. Now with that said, even I was very appreciative of all the works that I got to see inside the Vatican. Every inch of this place is just filled with art that you just can't seem to not bask it in. Well worth a visit even if you're not an artsy person like myself. Just be aware of all the third party ticket sellers outside of the museum. They will pitch untrue statements to lure you in effort to make you pay at a higher price and make profit. read more
When in Rome, I mean Vatican City! A must see if you are in Rome. Religious or not, the Vatican is the home to so much historical artwork. Plan and book you trip here ahead of time! The cost of admission is 16 euro, but if you buy online, its just 4 euro more but you get to skip the queue! And the queue is crazy before the museum even opens. Once you enter, you take the spiral staircase down and you are surrounded by works of art. There is just so much art on the walls. The ceiling art is my favorite. Just crazy how you can paint like that. My favorite was the Gallery of Maps. Then you get to the Sistine Chapel. Holy works of art! Words do not explain how amazing this is! TIP, once you are done, head to the back left exit and you are able to enter St. Peter's Basilica without having to enter from the outside lines. A MUST MUST visit! read more

Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been a few years since I've admitted this and I've just sinned in the worst place imaginable: The Vatican. Perhaps it was a serpent handing over an apple to me, a messenger in disguise, or someone who just wanted to remind me that I was human and imperfect. "Due bigliette." The ticket guy looked at me seriously. "Studente?" "Che cosa? Eh?" I get all flustered when Italians actually think I can speak a little Italian. How ironic when I am trying to convince them that I can. "Studente? How old are you?" "...Um... 18?" The ticket guy threw a wink at me. "One for mama and one for bambina." And in I was at a reduced ticket fare. More gelato for me!!!! It's not something I am proud of, my dishonesty and greed to save some Euros, but hey European vacations are expensive and those museum fares are astronomical. The Vatican Museum was pretty cool. It's definitely a must see when in Rome. I got a 3 hour Bible lesson from my mother. I now know more than I need to know about every saint in the book. The Vatican Museum is like a maze. I'd actually recommend joining an organized tour or investing in the self guided head phone tours. Everything there is overwhelming and a bit much to comprehend right on the spot if you are walking around aimlessly. My punishment for lying? I totally missed out on The Sistine Chapel. I tried to take a shortcut through the museum (again cheating) and ended up exiting. Ah well, at least I got to experience the iconic winding snail like staircase. My mother felt so bad for me that she offered to repay the admission price so we could go back the next day. I declined. Too much to see and too little time. Must move on. Till we meet again, Rome. read more
We had a tour which included the entrance to this place. There was a lot to see and I thought it was amazing to see how intricate some of the paintings, sculptures and architecture here was. I probably took more pictures than I knew what to do with but that was okay. We saw the Sistine Chapel which was pretty crowded as well as St. Peter's Basilica which were all part of the tour that we bought. There were a ton of people here and majority of them were all part of some tour. We went through everything with our tour group which was about three hours long. I thought that was more than enough to be able to see everything here. I thought it was interesting to see and would recommend it to others if you're in Rome. read more
This was my second trip to the Vatican museum and it still just takes my breath away. Pictures and videos just don't do it justice, you have to see it for yourself. If you are an art and/or architecture lover you cannot pass this by. Keep in mind, the queues will also take your breath away, so do yourself a huuuuuge favor and book a skip the line tour. Please. Just trust me, you have never seen lines like these (yes, line-S). I've heard that some of the tours are not so great, I know our guide didn't tell us anything too spectacular or that we didn't already know but I honestly didn't book the tour for the information so much as the ability to skip a days worth of lines. So just think of the commentary (no matter how unimpressive) as an added bonus. Once inside you make your way to the museum. My favorite part is the long-long hallways of artwork completely surrounding you. You won't know where to look, there's art on ceilings and on either side of you on the walls. There is just so much to take in, it's truly stunning! After that you head over to the Sistine Chapel. There really isn't anything I can add that isn't already known but trust me it's even more impressive in person. Keep in mind that photos or video of any kind is strictly forbidden. From there your tour will turn you loose and you are free to make your way over to St. Peter's Basilica. I remember how taken back I was the first time I stepped inside and it still hasn't failed to knock me off my feet. St. Peter's is the world's largest church and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Bernini's exquisite baldachin is the basilica's crown jewel and primary feature. You can also see Michelangelo's very recognizable Pieta (and yes you can take pictures!). A couple extra tips: *There is a nice little shop when you get out of the Sistine Chapel and before you walk over to St. Peter's. Inside it is run by nuns and a great place to pick up a rosary blessed by the pope or other nice souvenirs. *Cover up your shoulders and knees or you will not be permitted entry. *Do not buy a bottle of souvenir alcohol before you head to the Vatican. Even if it is wrapped up and stored in your backpack....cough cough. (You'll have to check it in) *You can take photos in the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's but not The Sistine Chapel. *As you make your way of out, don't forget to stop in the official Vatican post office. Here you can get a passport stamp if you'd like (as the Vatican is it's own micro-country) and you can buy and send out some postcards and official Vatican stamps! Don't forget to get a picture of you putting the postcards in the yellow mailboxes! read more
UNBELIEVABLE! I am neither Catholic nor a true art lover, but I sure was amazed and appreciated the beauty and the magnitude of this Vatican City. The statues and all the marble works are incredible. The detailed ceiling artwork looks so three dimensional and real. Then there was the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo that took 4 years to finish. Indescribable, unfortunately there was no photography allowed in there. Definitely, a must see while you are in Rome. If you purchase rosaries or other items at the Vatican Museum, you can have the Pope bless them for free. You tell them what hotel you are staying at, and they will deliver your blessed items to your hotel by the next day. read more

Never again! It's complete chaos & there is zero crowd control. It's hell on earth...but...hey at least you're surrounded by stuff the Catholic Church plundered throughout history. Why aren't they giving more to the poor? How many cases of items made from precious metals do they really need when there is so much poverty in the world? They're charging everyone between €20-30 for entrance & audio guides...and they're cramming so many people in that you can barely move...they're making tons of money...where's it all going? This was the worst experience while visiting Rome. I wish I'd skipped it & just looked at pix online instead. I'd have €24 more € in my pocket & about 15 less bruises & scrapes on my body from being pushed & stepped on. This place is a money making scheme...nothing more. read more
When in Rome. The Vatican Museum is a definite must see. To ensure entrance, it's best to reserve a tour in advance so you don't have to wait in the enormous lines and potentially miss out on an opportunity of a lifetime. It is important to dress appropriately as well. There are no shorts, sleeveless or shoulder baring tops allowed. I would suggest women wear a shawl around your shoulders or wear a shirt that covers your shoulders or they might not let you in. Dress on the safe side to ensure entry. They can be strict. There is so much to see. It's definitely something everyone should see in their lifetime. The Sistine Chapel alone, was worth the price of admission. There is no photography allowed in the chapel, pictures are permitted around other areas of the museum however. Also, make sure you do not speak above a whisper. They enforce both of these rules very strictly. read more

Nothing can impress you more - ever. SEVEN miles of art work in the museum! Expect long lines even in mid-October - best to go early in the morning. Hydrate before you enter. Wear the most comfortable shoes you can. Pay attention to the dress code and museum hours and day schedules. Reasonably priced souvenirs you'll never find elsewhere. Most of all, wear a "True Religion" brand t-shirt like I did!!! Enjoy!!! read more

I really loved this place the history of this place is truly amazing . All of the architecture structure so old and all of the statutes that have been found through out the years the way they been kept is unbelievable. If you love history or find it interesting I recommend coming here because is truly an experience of a life time . I would definitely come back again and again . read more

A very beautiful, rich with history and thought provoking place. I recommend this place to anyone visiting Rome, it is worth the price. We took the express tickets that allowed us to skip the queues (and hour long wait in the blistering sun) - Definitely worth the extra money! Allow a whole day for this so you can really appreciate everything the museum has to offer. read more
You can't come to Rome without visiting the Musei Vaticani. The Vatican houses a mind-boggling collection of art, from ancient to modern. The grounds and the buildings themselves are works of art, too. Make sure you purchase tickets ahead of time, especially during peak season, or you'll have to choose between standing in ridiculously long lines or paying through the nose for a guided tour. There are lots of resources if you're interested in a self-guided tour. We just wandered through on our own, and it was incredible, but I'm sure you get more out of it with some sort of audio tour (either rent one there, or download one of the available off-line apps ahead of time). I was surprised to see a section of modern art as well--just hadn't occurred to me that the art wouldn't all be old/religious. After snaking your way through the many buildings and galleries, you'll make the long walk to the Sistine Chapel. So. Many. People. It felt like cattle being herded down the long hallways to get there, so don't look at all the people, look up and check out the amazing artwork on the walls and ceilings. When you finally make it to the chapel, it'll likely be crowded in there, too, but it's incredibly beautiful. If you take photos, you'll be harangued by a guard until you delete the photo(s) and/or kicked out. Don't say I didn't warn you. As you exit, don't go to the left (regular exit); head to the right back corner for the group exit, which will put you directly into St. Peter's Basilica (instead of outside, where you'll have to stand in line again to get in). An absolute must see if you are in Rome. You can walk around for hours, finishing with the breathtaking work in the Sistine Chapel. Tickets are reasonably priced for all that you see (less than 15 euro I believe), and it is very easy to find. Take the metro to Ottaviano, and it's less than a 10 minute walk. I have visited twice, and anytime I return to Rome I will make time for this incredible place. read more
Gorgeous artifacts to appreciate no matter what religious affiliation. Must go see the Sistine Chapel!! Don't fall for the tour groups trying to sell you tickets on the street. They are 2x or 3x the cost of a ticket and even if there's a line, it goes pretty fast. Even if you buy a ticket online, you still have to go to will call and pick it up so don't bother. If you're a student, bring your ID to get a discounted price. They forbid taking pictures of the Sistine Chapel. Do some light research on it before hand so you can appreciate the ceiling more. read more
We had a tough time justifying the expense of this visit. You cannot deny the beauty of the museum, grounds and collections. While we had a timed pass purchased well in advance online it seems anyone with a ticket can enter at any time of their choosing. From start to finish there were too many people and the large tour groups take up all the space making it virtually impossible to enjoy your visit. When asking about the Egyptian collection we were told to go down a closed set of stairs only to not be allowed back up which forced us to work our way back around to areas we'd already been and fight through yet another horde of people.
