I have ordered chicks from McMurray for over 30 years. Their chicks have always come on time and in great condition. Probably 95 percent sexing success. Plan your chicks around your weather, don't order too early to avoid the cold or too late to avoid the heat and you will be fine read more

First batch of chickens that came in February all 25 died , 2nd batch they shipped them already 6 came dead thy are not even shipping them with heating pads. This company is highly incompetent. We have always had great success with the chicks that we have ordered, and they have been healthy, productive egg layers. There is always a free one added, or several if it is a large order, because there is the possibility of one dying enroute, or soon after arrival. Last year the Post Office did not notify us of our chicks' arrival, but, thankfully, they came on time in spite of the Post Office's lack of notification. read more

I want to first start out with that we were completely refunded, the shipping issue was a USPS issue not the hatchery itself. My issue is with one of the customer service representatives and their policy, and the lack of help for emergency situations like the one we faced. There isn't an emergency chick care line or anything in place to help in situations like ours. There needs to be. Chicks shipped Monday at 2pm, didn't arrive until FRIDAY 458pm est. I called Thursday for assistance after the chicks didn't arrive Tuesday or Wednesday, there was nothing they could do but offer us a refund or to ship out another order of them. That rep was understanding and sweet, I was not prepared to make a decision just yet, in hopes that the chicks would show up and maybe be okay. Friday afternoon, I called back in a panic as we still hadn't received the chicks. I knew their time was running out. The representative we got on this day was cold, tried to say the chicks would be fine, it's happened before and they've been fine... just not at all compassionate. I asked her what do I do if they show up? That they're likely all going to be deceased. She said to document and email them, to photograph and video the box and chicks. I cannot express how devastating and traumatic it is to have to see deceased animals, let alone have to handle them to get "in detail" photos. I understand this may be part of a policy to identify chicks or cause of death, but considering the amount of time that had passed due to shipping errors and she could clearly see the timeline of events and knew they were not going to be okay. 458pm est Friday we got the call the chicks were at the office, to be prepared for the devastation but some where still alive. The girls stayed late to help try and save the few that were left. 3/4 of them were deceased upon opening the box. We immediately got them into heat and started triaging them. We followed every emergency protocol we could find to try and save them. The loss was devastating. 63 babies were sent. As of Monday, only 8 were still with us. I called first thing to see if there was anything more we could do to prevent further loss, the rep who took my call was absolutely wonderful and went over everything she knew to do. Assured me we were doing the right things and our best. She agreed that the previous rep should have handled things differently. She refunded our entire order as I couldn't have this happen again and apologized for our experience and loss. I truly appreciate her compassion. read more

Horrible experience. I ordered 25 sexed hens. 7 died within the first week - transport shock as it took the day old chicks 72 hours to get to my post office. Mcmurray did refund me for these birds but it was not fun for my kids to witness the chicks dying as we tried to get them to eat and drink With no success. 3 months later it turns out nearly half of the "hens" are roosters! they only would refund me for a fraction of the male birds. Nevermind the fact that I have been feeding them organic chicken food for four months and caring for them daily. I'm down to 10 hens, and I need to deal with 7 roosters - give away or kill and eat...not what I signed up for. I asked them for a full refund and they refused. I am an advocate for McMurry I usually order a new flock every 2 years And had no issues. Something has changed from my last order. I ended up with 2 free chicks. One was to be free for the bundle. I had one chick that was put in there with curled feet and its stomach was opened like its shell was pulled from it. It died. I have another one that has scissor beak which is very bad. I purchased six chicks from Murray McMurray and three died within days of receiving them. They were extremely weak when they arrived and could barely stand up. I called Murray McMurray and was told I should have called a veterinarian. The woman who I spoke with said "it only costs a few dollars to have a veterinarian look at them." I felt i should put review in here. I only had positive experience from a company. Ordered them three times, i think. This pictures is Mottled Houdan and flocks. Barely have any high rate death. I love my Mo and Dot until death. I lose Mo recently to my puppy. I'm very devastated. I'm Planning try order same type breed this fall for next spring. Maybe with Chinese geese. I have ordered chickens from them in the past two years in a row. This last year was the 3rd order we placed. We ordered 26 black cochins. When order arrived we lost one. By day 5 of having them, 4 more had passed. Now, the chickens are 5 months old and 5 more passed. I have had chickens for over 10 years and never had this kind of thing happen. Out of the last years chickens- we ordered 28, we only get one egg per day. I will not be recommending this hatchery any longer. read more

McMurray Hatchery only ships USPS and that is the problem. Unfortunately USPS service is extremely poor. I have ordered from McMurray 3 times and all 3 orders took somewhere between 5 and 11 business days too arrive. Their chicks and hatching eggs may be great but because USPS is such an abysmal failure and everything in the order arrives dead, the original quality doesn't matter. Sure they offer to refund purchase price or replace the order but that doesn't cover the expense of my time which I waste on the phone dealing with USPS and McMurray Hatchery customer service. Until they offer a different shipping option I now refuse to order anything from McMurray regardless of my customers requests. If you don't want to waste time waiting for USPS to kill everything in your order avoid purchasing live poultry or hatching eggs from McMurray Hatchery. read more

They also gave me a surprise chicken that naturally turned out to be a rooster. but also an aggressive rooster. I order 6 female lakenvelder chicks and also received a surprise male chick as well. I am so glad he was included. Not sure what kind he is but I love his afro on his head! If I could give zero stars, I would. They didn't even fill my order. We ordered in January so that our granddaughter could enjoy raising chicks during her visit. Our timing was based around these 65 chicks showing up. Two days after their expected hatch date (March 17), I looked up our order and found that our hens had a zero for quantity. When I called,after being on hold for about 20 min, customer service was very polite, but said that my order was canceled because they couldn't fill it. Things happen. But to wait until after the last minute and leave someone hanging is irresponsible. There's no way to fill this order elsewhere at this point. This is supposedly a family run business with a focus on helping everyone, from the beginner to those with larger flocks. Well, this small-time bird owner was kicked to the curb, causing useless preparation expenses for us and heartache for a little girl. And now we have roosters that we'll have to cull rather than keeping them to service the new hens. This is no longer a "trusted" company, as their advertising claims. read more

I want to share my experience with McMurray Hatchery. I ordered 25 pullets from them that were delivered the week of February 12th, 2024. The order was to include a surprise chick that was most likely to be a rooster. I chose this hatchery because they were one of the few that were shipping chicks so early into the year. Boy do I regret that now. I have been in contact with McMurray Hatchery multiple times. At first they made it sound like they understood, they would take care of it. What would they take care of? The fact that my order of 25 pullets is now a flock of at least 15 roosters. I provided videos and photos. I sent the front and side of 6 very obvious roosters as I was given mixed feedback on the hatchery viewing the videos as proof enough. They refunded me for 3. Why you ask? Because on an order of 25 pullets and one surprise chick, 3 of them are allowed to be roosters per their 90% sexing guarantee. With the time, feed, and effort I have put into growing out these roosters my full order should be refunded at minimum. This is bad business to not stand behind your product and to repeatedly give the customer the run around. Out of the 15 or more roosters, only a few have started weak crowing as they are just reaching 3 months old. The hatchery had the audacity to tell me we need to wait another month for all of the roos to be crowing before they will take further action. I will not be keeping and feeding a flock of roosters for another month when I purchased the chickens specifically for eggs. Roosters can be identified before crowing begins when you know what to look for. I know I cannot be the only person who will experience this from their orders early this year. I'm probably just one of the first to contact them regarding their shoddy sexing skills. I feel like they thought I was a Tractor Supply order and sent whatever. Do they stock Tractor Supply? Hell if I know, but I might as well have gone there instead with the selection I have received. I do not recommend this business. They will not make it right on their obvious mistakes. read more

been ordering from Mcmurrays for 3+ years. this year (2023) we have had the worst luck with their meat birds. We are not new to this and we have been raising birds for 20+ years. This year we ordered 55 of the McMurray Reds and 55 Cornish Cross. All pasture raised and given a high protein non GMO feed. At 12 weeks the Red roosters dressed out at a measly 4lbs. It's not the feed as we have raised Big Reds for meat before and in the same feed. Those birds dressed out at 5-9lbs at 12 weeks. Same feed and same raising practices. The Cornish Cross will be 8 weeks old and ready for butcher this October but so far out of 55 birds 6 have died of what seems to be heart problems. They are 4 weeks old right now and one after another we find them labored breathing, unable to walk properly and dropping like flies. NEVER AGAIN will we buy from this hatchery. we have never seen anything like this. read more

Just received 9 dead and dying chicks from McMurray after 69 hours in transit. Customer service will "respond in 2-3 business days." The older reviews everywhere of this business were good, that's why I used them. New reviews are not good, however. Don't know if they changed hands or just got overly greedy trying to meet high demand for chicks. VERY BAD EXPERIENCE. Just so glad my kids are grown and did not have to live this nightmare of trying to save these poor abused animals and watching them die. read more

I expected better. We ordered 15 chicks. They came Thursday. I immediately got them out of the shipping box into their new home with water and food. It's Monday, 4 days later, and half of them have died. They look good the night before then the next day 2 or more are dead. They have warmth, a way to get away from too much heat, clean water and chick food. And they are all dying. I've not had this problem with the local farm store. Not recommended. We spent $91.82 and half half the chicks left. At this rate we may be lucky to have one survive at all. read more

We wanted chickens and decided not to go to our local feedstore because they're $10 per chick unsexed. I did research and decided to take my chances with Murray McMurray. I called them many times and did a lot of research on what breed would be best for us. We ended up with 8 Black Australorps & 8 Whiting True Greens. They were mailed late on Monday from IA and got to my CA Post Office Thursday morning. I did get the Quik Chik and Gro Gel. I did make sure to dip their beaks in the water (I did add sugar to the water) before putting them under the heating plate. They were eating, drinking, and exploring in no time! I am very happy with the results, but next time will skip the Gro Gel. read more

Shipment was sent, as I looked at the tracking information I noticed that the order was not correct. They sent a substitute without notifying me. They say I agreed to substitution of a similar chicken, by not clicking no substitutions at the bottom of the page, and they sent me two extra. WOW I now have 2 extra chickens that I didn't order or want. Buyers beware click NO SUBSTITUTIONS Better yet find a local breeder they are everywhere on Facebook, and you will get a much healthier bird. read more

We've been ordering from McMurray for over 30 years. We just had chicks delivered today and out of an order of 27 chicks, only 22 were in the box. They were packed well and all were healthy and in good condition. Part of the order was 1 male and 6 female Speckeled Sussex, which we wanted for breeding. The rest were Big Red meat birds. One meat bird was missing. The invoice said they included one free male Sussex (2 total) and one mystery exotic chick. No exotic chick was delivered. Only 5 of the Sussex were delivered, so I don't know if I have 2 males and 3 females, 1 male and 4 females, or 5 females. They won't replace the birds unless you place another order with the minimum 25 chicks for shipment. All we got was a credit for 3 chicks. The 2 free chicks were free, so no credit. Last year we ordered 25 chicks and 1 was DOA and 3 more died in the next 48 hrs. However, since we didn't call them to tell them about the dead chicks until day 5, NO reimbursement. We've been disappointed the last few years with the quality of chicks. We ordered Americaunas 4 years ago, hoping the problem with all looking mostly identical was fixed. [The fun part of Americaunas is that each one looks different with a large variation in hen color possible, as well as variations in egg color from pink to blue to olive green.]. While the hen coloring was sufficiently varied, the eggs are all the same color - a pale blue/green. They've bred all the beautiful variability out of the Americaunas and we won't order them from McMurray again. We're done with McMurray and don't recommend them. Find a local breeder instead. read more

I placed an order back in December for geese. I called several times to talk to a "knowledgeable representative" and was told that the delivery date in June would be perfectly fine. I spent a lot of money getting the barn ready for the geese, buying feed and waterers. They were supposed to ship this week, but instead they cancelled my order and have none available. Let this be a lesson, do not count on them to send you what you ordered and confirmed multiple times. I get that they are live birds, but the hatchery didn't plan appropriately. Don't trust them, and certainly don't spend money preparing for an order that this hatchery may never send you! The only positive in this experience was that a representative reached out to me twice to see if alternative geese could be used. As they were not what I wanted, and I had already placed an order from another hatercy, I did not take them up on the replacement geese. But I appreciated thier efforts nonetheless. read more

Purchased 6 black Indian runner ducklings and the extra duckling died during shipment. When these ducks began to mature it was apparent they are not pure black Indian runners as all have white feathers mixed in. Really disappointed this happened as I was hoping to breed them to preserve the breed/color. One even has a crooked neck which appeared when he was maturing. I love my ducks but not McMurray Hatchery at this point. Their quality control is awful. read more

We ordered chicks from McMurray and are very disappointed in their lack of customer service and standing behind their 48 hr guarantee policy. We received them, opened the box and most of them were dead. We ordered 53 and they were packaged in a very small box. I called in to let them know and to get help with the rest of them. They asked me which ones were dead, (I had no idea, I guessed on the breed and the number, since there were so many dead)(I'm obviously a bad guesser) 33 were dead, and 3 died later, (my fault, I didn't take care of them properly) I had guessed only 13 to be dead(once in again, in my haste to figure out what to do about the rest.) So BEWARE they will hold any and all guesses, estimates, "I don't knows" against you. They only refunded me for 13. I offered to send them a pic I took when I got them but they said they will only go off what I told them on a recorded line. I will not recommend them to anyone. Their guarantee policy is just words, not action. read more

i ordered way in advance to make sure i could get the breeds i wanted. Was told just before they shipped that they did not hatch out any buffs this year so they replaced them with a similar bird.....so i received the buffs that they said they didn't have and they replaced my egg layers with 7 meat birds. also, 1 was dead when they arrived and had to cull 2 for broken feet. ordered all hens and got 3 roosters which i also had to cull. of 28 laying hens i have 15 that are usable for eggs.... and they do not look good (combs grew in bad, received with crooked toes and general poor representation of breed standards). I will be culling all of them as soon as there replacements start laying eggs. They did try to give me credit for the birds that arrived bad or dead but why waste more of my time. Awful experience. I would honestly rate it lower if I could. I've used this hatchery before, but that was a very long time ago and I don't recall any problems. This time, however was a disaster. Even before they arrived, six of my chicks were substituted without any warning or consultation, and I wish I could say that was the worst of it. The 25 birds arrived and appeared normal, but began to die off within the first two days. For reference, I had four other chicks in the brooder already from a different hatchery. All of them are healthy, happy and thriving. Of the 25 McMurray chicks, however, only five survived, and since they didn't die within the 48hr livability guarantee, I was only reimbursed for six of them....even though they all died of the same thing in under four days; and this is only after their customer service department was cold and snippy with me and tried to blame it on the temperature of my brooder, their feed, their bedding, despite the fact that I had four perfectly healthy chicks from a different hatchery and McMurray was the only variable. Long story short, I am heartbroken and disgusted. I will NEVER use this hatchery again. That 48 hr guarantee only covers their assets if the chicks are injured during transport. It benefits them, and not the customer. Save your money and your heartbreak. Consider buying local if possible. Avoid this business at all costs. read more
