One other thing I appreciated was that there was a lot of care and consideration for both kids and parents from the director - there was clear communication on expectations, upcoming events and changes so that things didn't come as a surprise. When we go on vacation she always says how she misses school, her teachers, and friends, and is genuinely excited to go back, which is so reassuring as a parent. We originally chose Grow Smart after touring many places because the facility feels very secure and private. They have an amazing outdoor play area but it's completely private and cannot be seen from the street at all, which I love. All of the teachers and staff have been great and they really go above and beyond with things like their summer program with themed weeks, water days and special guests, a preschool graduation that was better than many kindergarten graduations I've been to, and my daughters favorite, Pizza Fridays! We can't say thank you enough to Grow Smart for their loving care of our daughter for the past 2 years.

It's clear that the school is focused on nurturing the whole child, building confidence, kindness, and a genuine love for learning. One of the highlights for our family has been the musical program. Our daughters have been involved in the school musical, and it has been such a meaningful experience for them. There wasn't ever any trouble, just no willingness to be part of school functions, class projects, and we were about to succumb to the idea that was just the way it was. No joy for school or even extra-curricular activities. Well... these teachers did amazing things!! My child is like a whole new kid. The small class sizes helped them focus on my child's needs, and the care the teachers showed made such a difference. Now my child loves school, can't wait to "try" math (it can still be hard) and is in the school play! I would have never thought this could happen. I was just looking for a place where a child could feel welcome and loved, and, oh yeah - learn. I am so very thankful that we took a chance on Mt. Helix Academy. I can't recommend them enough!

Mrs. Kang was the best second grade teacher ever! She was incredibly funny and welcoming. It's unfortunate that she retired. Our teachers thus far have been caring, knowledgeable, and dependable. While the school has gone through a few changes over the years, the sparrow community continues to hold together for the kids with help of parents and staff alike. The most important thing is my children are HAPPY at sparrow. They have made true friendships, they know all the staff on a first name basis, and are learning to love learning. Waldorf education is a different kind of educational pathway, however at sparrow all concepts that are seen in public school are still met at sparrow bcuz they are a charter and state funded. They just teach it in a different way. They are not perfect and it's an uphill battle to keep this charter school functioning as a Waldorf since we still have to meet state testing, but the village it provides makes it worth while. Those looking into Waldorf education private or charter, should really work to understand what, how and why, waldorf curriculum is taught.

Even before I had kids people would tell me how lucky I was for living within the area for this top school. After 2 kids going there and having nothing but great, spectacular, hard working teachers like Folks, Ek, Barth, Beach and many others. The Last 2 Principals Cotter and Sardina are over the top with child education, safety and fun environment. You can tell whenever there is a school function here because there is no parking for blocks around due to the massive parent participation. This is in many ways a privileged school and I know many parents from Northmont beating the door down to get in here.

There have been many changes over the years, but it has still managed to keep its community spirit. Due to budget cuts class sizes have gone up since he started here. They do a pretty good job though. I think it helps that it's a smaller campus. One thing I think they've done really well with is the Learning Center. Joe Malek does a tremendous job running it. He is so energetic and positive. Every school would be lucky to have a teacher like him. Maryland Ave has some really great support staff on campus. I think a lot of times people remember the teachers and might forget about all these other wonderful folks who make a huge difference in our children's lives everyday. I know early on I realized this because they ALL knew who my son was within the first few days of school. And it wasn't because he was a problem child, it was because they cared and made a point to get to know him even though he was very shy.
