My Husband and I are in our late 80's and lived in a Retirement Center in Gulf Shores. I was…read morestarting to need help with my Husband dealing with Alzheimers. I had ridden by "Haven Memory Care" many times and decided to stop in one day and look around and ask Questions. This was mid 2023. We stopped and visited with the Director and Staff. Everyone was very polite and would invite us to Lunch occasionally with the other Patients, or Events they would have, while we were still considering the Haven facility for my Husband. My Family and I decided to move my Husband in to Haven. Finally, the day came to Move him in. It was "required" by Haven, that My Husband have NO VISITORS for "1 Week". The "Week" was to allow the Nurses/Staff to get familiar with each other. But, during this "Week" period, I could Call and speak to the Director to see How he is doing. I was ALWAYS told "He is Doing Great and Adapting well". The Family was so Happy to Hear that. So, the day after the "1 Week" period, I was allowed to Visit him for the First Time. I noticed "Cuts and Burses" on his arms (I Took Pictures). I went to the Director and asked, "How did this Happen" and to please "dress it and put bandages on his cuts" (they had not even bandaged him and the skin was STILL Hanging on his arm). When I Questioned the "Day Nurse", they said "He got Violent with the Nurse/Staff". Wait a minute, the Nurse/Staff "HAD to HAVE BEEN VIOLENT ALSO to have CAUSED those Kind of Injuries - Is THAT the way a NURSE/Staff handles an Alzheimers Patient is to GET VIOLENT BACK to the Patient?" This was the FIRST I had heard this from the "FIRST WEEK" being there at Haven. The Director was telling me from his "FIRST WEEK", "He is doing Great and Enjoying Everyone" - SO, Was the Director "Lying to Me"? - Sure seems like it. The Director then told me to Contact Haven's Staff "Doctor". This Doctor had Never seen my Husband before or even spoken with him. When I asked for the Doctors Phone Number, I was then told the Doctor had "Changed my Husbands Time to Administer" his Medicine? WHAT? REALLY? It had been "10 DAYS" and this was the FIRST I had seen my Husband -or- Even Heard of What REALLY Happened? It was said to me by the Director, that the "Night Nurse/Staff" - "Writes a Log" on what happens during the "Night Shifts". The Director said to me, "There were Pages describing My Husbands attitude towards the Nurse/Staff. The Director told me One Nurse said, "He bent my hand back and hurt me". Oh, so that is "WHY You Abuse an Elderly Man with Alzheimers" (I have pictures of Bruises and Bloody Skin - that is ABUSE). The Director also told me that, the "Night Nurse/Staff" are "NOT AS EASY GOING" as the "DAY SHIFT NURSE/STAFF ARE". WHAT ? That right there is an "ADMISSION OF ABUSE" on an "Elderly Man with Alzheimers". The Director also told me that, "My Husband could NOT stay at Haven, and called an Ambulance to Send my Husband to the "Mobile Infirmary Hospital" ("Senior Citizen Behavioral Management" facility). I visited My Husband at that "Facility" and they were ALL VERY POLITE and Informative on How my Husband is doing. He will be there "Three Weeks" to determine which "Sleeping Aids and Alzheimer Medication" work best for my Husband. I have NOW gone to "Haven" to "Collect my Husbands" personal Items while he is Still in the Hospital's - Senior facility. "WE ARE NOT GOING TO SEND MY HUSBAND BACK TO HAVEN". Haven then became ANGRY and Stated that I "Violated Terms by - NOT given them a 30-Day Notice of LEAVING"....I Quickly commented, "And You Did NOT give me a 30 Day Notice that you were Sending My Husband to a "Senior Citizen Behavioral Management" Hospital facility. I have since called His Personal Doctor, and we discussed "HOSPICE CARE", his Doctor said "He Did Qualify" and "WE are having a Bed brought to our Home". My Husband will get the BEST CARE and LOVE "HERE AT HOME". I will NEVER RECOMMEND "HAVEN" to ANYONE...there is SOMETHING "VERY WRONG" there.

Earlier this year we approached Haven Memory Care to see if my mother in law would be a good fit…read morefor their services. We were assured after 3 separate nursing evaluations (2 by their head nurse) that she was and although we were hesitant to move her there the sales pitch was relentless. "This is the last place she will need to live". "Our monitoring services are such that sitters would not be required". After weekly calls we finally agreed to move her there. For a brief moment it seemed like a great fit but within hours of her moving in everything changed. Apparently Haven Memory Care has been losing money and facing compliance issues such that they brought in a new administrative team to turn the ship around. They specifically began to focus on getting rid of low mobility higher acuity patients and my mother in law who suffers from Parkinson's was identified as one of those. Less than 4 hours after our arrival we were told by their compliance officer that she didn't think my mother-in-law law was a good fit. Despite their monitoring system she ended up with 5 falls in the next few weeks (2 in the first night, turns out they didn't know how to use their monitoring system). Within weeks we were given our eviction notice and she was summarily evicted.(Along with at least 12 other low mobility higher acuity patients who were either evicted or dumped into the hospital and not allowed to return in July). All of this resulted in tremendous stress and expense to my mother in law and we, as her health care advocates, ultimately just felt conned. We were lied to repeatedly by the sales, administrative and nursing staff and then tossed aside due to a sudden change in their corporate policy. As a physician in this community I just feel sad and angered that a healthcare facility with this kind of anti-patient, pro business philosophy can still exist. But maybe they are all that way and I am naive. Anyway , this sucked and we were suckered by Haven Memory Care. If my experience means anything I would advise people to stay way from Haven Memory Care.
