My mother's hope chest has been in my custody since she died over forty years ago, and I'm sorry to say that I didn't take good care of it. The finish was damaged, and the top was badly scratched up by years of dogs jumping up on it. When I finally decided to have it refinished, I chose Murphy's based on my daughter's experience with them, and expected them to do as good a job as possible under the circumstances, but they really exceeded my expectations -- it looks wonderful, better than it looked when I first inherited it! Wow! I am so impressed with Robert Murphy and his work. After uncovering a set of student desks in our garage, I contacted Robert for assistance. The desks were heavily damaged, with scratches, graffiti, paint, and cracking. They were stored in a non-climate controlled environment for over three decades--and frankly, were not in the best shape even when my sister and I used them as kids. We got them from the Salem Public Schools when they upgraded to new ones. For sentimental reasons, I asked Robert whether it was possible to restore one for my son to use. Robert and his colleague Oberon came to our house the very next day, gave a professional assessment, listened carefully to my hopes for the desk, and restored it beautifully. It looks better than I could have imagined! I am so grateful that my son will get to study at the same desk that I did--only with a brand new, beautiful look. Considering the work involved, the cost was very reasonable and fair. I needed two pieces, a beautiful cherry desk with three horrible gouge marks that,To my horror, I caused while helping to move it into my house. The other was an original Stickley side table that I bought for a lark at auction, but the surface was in horrible need of professional refinishing. Bob at Murphy's refinishing did an amazingly beautiful and perfect job on both pieces. They look brand new without blemish. Additionally I found him very reasonable. The desk was very large and required being taken apart and then reassembled in our small Den and he did that without any additional cost. My husband and I had Murphy's Refinishing recently refinish a dining room table and chairs, a buffet and china cabinet that we are guessing were probably built in the 1900's and were in desperate need of refinishing. It was my husband's great grandparents set. We wanted to keep it in the family so we decided to refinish it and we had read and heard nothing but wonderful things about Murphy's Refinishing as I was doing my research on companies that did this type of work. The day I emailed the company about receiving a quote I got a response very quickly from Bob. They happened to be scheduled to be in our area that day so they came and gave us a very reasonable quote so we decided to move forward right away.
