Can't say enough about Murphy's music and the entire staff! We brought my daughter's clarinet in for service and she had notice a vibration on and off. Of course there was no buzzing when we brought it in, so they cleaned it up and changed some pads. As soon as we got it home it started again, went back and were greated with the same smile and kindness as always and a don't worry we will figure it out! At age 61 I decided it was time to satisfy my dream of learning the guitar. I went into Murphy's Music where I rented instruments for my children for many years for school orchestra. I also had an heirloom violin that is probably over 100 years old passed down to me from my great uncle - Bob Murphy restored it and did a gradation on the soundboard which made it sound better than it ever did! Jeff listened to my goals and hooked me up with an excellent teacher - Jon. I worked with Jon for about one year, but there were too many scheduling issues on my end as I am a surgeon and Jon was only available on my surgery days. I switched to Dennis who is incredible! I am not a natural by any means, but with Dennis I am making awesome progress and having a blast at the same time! This is the first review I have ever written,,,but I had such an excellent experience that I felt impelled to recommend it to other musicians, I was having "issues" with the B flat on my flute and was looking for a local instrument repair shop that I could trust, rather than travel into the city. As soon as I stepped in the door, I was welcomed by Jeff and felt that I had found a local shop that was both professional and customer friendly. It is handicapped accessible, has handicapped parking, and I was immediately offered a chair to sit and be made comfortable. Ian, the "Flute. Doctor" was very knowledgeable and made the needed repair as I waited. I noticed that all customers were treated with the same friendly and excellent service from the staff. I'm grateful to have found "Murphy's Music" to give such personalized care to both myself and my precious flute...and intend to return for further maintenance needs. I drove from Brooklyn to get a bass gig bag as Murphys selection was so much better than the stores in nyc. Great gear and super friendly and helpful people there made it worth the shlep. I went in last night to have my Martin Custom acoustic guitar looked at because the 1/4" input (where you plug cable into) fell into the body as I was getting on stage to perform. I was greeted over the phone by Tim who confirmed they were still open and would be happy to look at what happened. Jordan (another employee) and Tim were not the guitar repair people onsite helped me with the issue and FIXED my guitar input with a little elbow grease. Murphy's is a great local music store. I can't speak for the selection, though I'm sure they can order whatever you want. Both of my kids took lessons there. They had different teachers over the years and all of them were fantastic. If you're looking to learn an instrument, this is the place. There are a bunch of practice rooms on the main floor and downstairs as well. I think you can learn pretty much any instrument. They also do repairs. I assume the prices are competetive. They seem reasonable for the few repairs we needed on a flute and an oboe. Finally, the staff is really friendly and helpful. Support your local music store and shop here. I'm not sure if it was the owner or a manager but he was absolutely fantastic. I had bought a guitar that was used for my daughter for Christmas and it needed to be tuned and a string replaced but the Guitar was in pretty bad shape and he was so nice and gave me a very very reasonable price on another guitar that made my daughter smile from ear to ear. So I just had an awesome experience at this place!!! But first a little back story... I have been going to Sam Ash for an extremely long time for all of my guitar needs. I would always go there for my guitar fixes and gear needs... One day I decided to turn in my Schecter which had a floyd on it and Sam ash took 6 months!! to fix my guitar! I couldn't believe it, and also they slammed me with a $120 price tag which was out of control! later down the line i knew i needed to find a place that wouldn't take 6 months to fix my guitar and also would not charge me a ridiculous amount for just turning a screw! Anyways, I found this place in my local town and decided to give it a try! I brought in my Single cut prs SE hoping this place would help me out! The staff was extremely professional, engaging and wrote down pretty much everything i needed for my setup. Almost a week and a half later, I get a call from The tech John who ended up leaving me a Voicemail about what he did to my guitar... Today i walked in and was greeted by friendly staff and Once i opened the case and played my guitar it was like when I first bought it! I got home and immediately plugged it in and it played like a dream! If your not going to this place for all your guitar needs your doing it wrong!! If I could give Murphy's Music 10 stars I would! I live in Long Island but I teach band in Queens. There is absolutely no budget at my school for music. I shared this reality with the owner. Not only did they give me amazing prices for instruments but they were so human! They cared about my school community even though it was miles and miles from their location. They changed my students lives this year with having more instruments in their hands/possession. I couldn't believe just how amazing they were. What a heartwarming, caring and thoughtful establishment! I highly recommend this business because they are human! I am a professional musician. I am also a hard-core quality nut. I don' play nasty guitars and I don't like people who don't know their stuff (It gets annoying when you buy stuff only to have to return it, because the salespeople didn't know squat!!). ANYWAY, (long sigh...) Go to Murphy's. Everyone there knows what they are talking about. many of them play professionally every weekend or record sessions all week long. Jeff the owner/manager plays bass like a fiend, so when he says this or that about a Bass amp, or Bass amp..HE KNOWS. The other people there, it's the same. They are pros. It's not a hustle like certain other Music stores, these people only carry whats ACTUALLY the right stuff. Amateur or pro, they have the TOOLS and the Lessons. Haven't been back in a while due to the service. Stopped in today with my son, and it was more of the same. Please don't touch the guitars, we will get them for you, then when you want to try something out, they are on the phone or on facebook and cannot be bothered. Waited for 5 minutes (timed it) before I gave up and left. I have spent thousands of dollars in that store in the past, but I will never go back again after today. read more
