Restaurant - super tight inside. My butt was mere inches from others' curries and I apologize. There is also no AC as most Berkeley places won't have either. Seating is very tight, even if you eat along the window. Tip - get there before know rushes, ex: dinner rush around 530pm. It gets busy towards 9pm as well due to the location it is in. Curry - like other reviewers said, you get a butt load of curry and rice. Plus side is if you're a student, you get even more rice! The pickled ginger are so yummy. Looking at some of the pictures for the shrimp and curry as well as my own food, I wish there was more meat and less curry, but for those who love curry, it'll be a great place to eat. Parking - abundant street parking if you come at good times and even better on Sundays when it's free. I like curry. I especially like Japanese so it's kind of obvious that I would like this place. Originally I had been to the one in SF which is pretty small and a hole in the wall. I was super excited when I saw the coming soon sign for Muracci's 3 and boy I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the tonkatsu curry which is a fried pork cutlet with rice and curry sauce to go. I always order my curry extra spicy, but to me the curry sauce is pretty mild, though some of my friends may disagree. Portions aren't too big since I usually finish my food in one go at Muracci's and it's a little pricy, but the food is good. Not only is their logo very inviting (chubby guy with a huge smile), but the aroma of fresh Japanese curry fills your senses as soon as you walk in. They have several different items that are served obviously with curry and side items you can add (I recommend potatoes and carrots). They also offer white or brown rice. You also can choose the level of spiciness you want the curry to be. The plates come out relatively quick by a very friendly and cute elderly woman. Decent, small Japanese curry house a short walk from campus. It was a large portion and they give you more than enough rice to get full. I've definitely had better, more flavorful meat so it was lacking in that regard. I wanted to try their grilled salmon curry but they were out. The beef was alright, but I probably wouldn't get it again. The curry meal also came with some yummy pickled veggies. The food was pretty yummy. The chicken katsu was good - fried perfectly, just a teensy bit dry. The curry was delicious and definitely had a kick to it. I could see the little red pepper flakes that they made it spicy. The portion was massive. A lot of curry, a lot of rice, and a lot of chicken. It was big enough for two! I couldn't finish mine, so I took the rest home. I think I would've liked veggies in my curry though. The customer service was excellent. The two ladies working that day were very attentive and really nice. Refilled the water multiple times and asked how the food was and if there was anything else we needed. I have to start by admitting a bias. Japanese curry isn't really my jam. Thai curries are consistently awesome. Other southeast countries... Myanmar, Laos, Burma... also amazing. The sunny side egg went well with the gyudon when you blended them together. The portion size of the gyudon was huge. Taste-wise, it was slightly different from what I would have expected for a gyudon becuase it was purely salty (but not too salty), instead of a mixed taste of sweet and salty. Came to Muracci's to try the Katsu Ramen Curry. Got to the restaurant right at 11 am when they opened. I was told to sit wherever I wanted and was handed menus and brought water and silverware. I ordered the ramen and had my piping hot dish about 12 minutes later. It was so hot that it burned the roof of my mouth and was still so hot about 35 minutes later. I was only able to eat about 1/3 of my bowl of ramen curry but I'm still giving 4 stars because the curry was very flavorful and the portion was huge. The Katsu was nicely fried. I had asked for my bowl without bean sprouts and green onions so it wasn't quite as colorful as the pictures that others have posted. I brought my leftovers back to the office and had my colleagues try it. Muracci's emphasis is on Japanese curry dishes -- the sauce is more or less the same, so what actually changes is the protein (chicken or pork cutlet, fried prawns, tofu, etc.) I ordered the Pork Katsu Curry with rice and medium spice. Make sure to ask for extra rice from their student special, because they give you so much curry! That being said, I thought that the curry was a bit underwhelming. The sauce was very watery and salty. I also wish that they would give a bigger portion of the pork cutlet, because halfway through, I found that I still had too much curry but only a few spoonfuls left of the rice and pork, which was due to need to balance the saltiness of the curry. Don't judge a book by its cover. My wife and I came here looking for some Japanese style curry, and when we walked in, the aroma got us both excited for what was to come. While waiting a rather long time for our curry and Karaage to arrive, we enjoyed looking at the cool artwork on the wall. When our food finally did arrive, we were ready to dig in with great anticipation as it looked quite appetizing and fresh. However, my wife picked up her spoon only to find smooshed wet rice stuck to its bottom. We waited a few minutes for the server to come, but ended up swapping it with a clean spoon on the table next to ours. As we ate our curry, we felt something was lacking. My hot seafood curry tasted mostly right, though the shrimp were a bit mealy, and the curry itself could have used more heat. My wife's mild one was amiss and had an awkward sweetness to it, enough so to make us both question if she should continue to eat it. Beyond eating her tonkatsu, she ended up leaving most of her plate full of both the gravy and rice. Also, as my ice melted in my glass of water, a strong stench arose- the kind of smell you get from a sour washrag. The fried items were tasty and well cooked, but the curry doesn't represent itself well, as it's mediocre at best. I've been here twice now, and I'm a bit confused about their spice level. Both times that I came, I ordered the katsu ramen with the spicy as the spice level. The first time I ate it, it was not spicy at all. I brushed it off because I thought that maybe that was their version of spicy. However, the second time I came, my ramen was extremely spicy, like my throat was burning from the spice! Overall though, the ramen and the katsu is quite good, I was just confused at the inconsistency. The pros about this place is that it is close to campus, students get a 10% discount, the servers are friendly, and the food is prepared quickly. The curry was pretty one-dimensional and honestly tasted a little worse than some curries I've made from boxed curry cubes. For $15, I'm expecting a lot more. We were greeted by a smug hostess/waitress who seemed apathetic towards everyone and her job. She didn't even speak to us, just took us to a table and left menus. She was even rude to the couple next to us, ignoring them purposefully when she seated us, and then 17 seconds later returning without saying anything - just standing there waiting for them to speak. The Katsu curry looks like it would be packed with flavour but it was watery and weak. We were so excited to eat here, but both my man and I agreed this place was way over-hyped. This place has the best Japanese curry in Berkeley, but only because it has the only Japanese curry in Berkeley. I didn't think it was anything special, but maybe I'm too used to the curry my friend (a friend who lived in Japan for two years) likes to make for my friends and me. I came here with my boyfriend and ordered the chicken katsu curry. We both got the extra rice+extra sauce for free because we're Cal students. The freebies are a good deal, but the curry itself is a little bland. Just curry--no vegetables. I thought it was a little overpriced for what we got. I will say the service was incredibly fast though. The food came out within minutes of our ordering and the check came before we were even done eating (no pressure to pay immediately though). I don't think I'll be back just because I have my friend to make me cheaper, more authentic curry. But this place was pretty good. read more
