In all honesty when you're as white as pint of Tippex and come from the foetid marshes of the land…read morethat culture forgot (Essex) then upon hearing the radio advert for Maureen's ("West Yorkshire's Headquarters for Caribbean food") you may find yourself compelled bodily to take part in its delights. Don't fight it. Give in to the pull. It's small, it's basic and it's not going to win any glamous location awards but STUFF that, the food is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. Where to even begin....just do what I did when I lived nearby, go every week until you've eaten everything on the menu, even the cow's feet (I aint kidding). Wash it all down with Guiness punch and then top it off with the only reasonable thing to have after a plate of glorious, flavourful, fresh Caribbean food.........a giant slab of homemade, hot, sweet sponge pudding smothered in an orgasm of thick creamy custard. I am physically salivating at the thought........I have to go. TAXI!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s if you are lucky you'll go when Maureen is singing her hymns at the top of her rich, warm voice........I wonder if she realises she's already in heaven? Spicy, filling, creamy, delicious heaven.

It's an informal, casual style cafe with a buzzing atmosphere and the staff have that warmth that makes you feel welcome everytime. The banter with the regulars can be hilarious too providing a free soap opera style enterainment. When I got the bill the first time around my mouth was wide open & the lady asked if it was too much! Her reply was gorgeous - "Dem locals wot cum in dis place don't like no 'spensive prices lady" and she gave me a big grin. I always leave a tip but noted the regulars don't lol! Today i had akee and saltfish and in the past i've had curried goat, mutton and naturally the wonderful rice and peas or dumplings - I also love fried plantains. There are always newspapers to read and lots of smiley faces, so with the great food to fill you up for next to nothing it's a great place to meet for lunch, especially when you are on a budget. Thank you Maureens! xc

Well now. I've been back to Sandinistas plenty since my last penning, and I have to admit, in all…read morethat time I'd only back for drinkies. Excellent, raucous, rambunctious, drinkies. The kind where you probably tried to dance on a table, the kind where you definitely felt as though your neck was broken the next day from head banging, the kind where you almost certainly meet a squadron on new best friends because you're having that good a time. (And it's as much to do with the awesome clientele, as the drunkenness, I can tell you.) So, yes. Go to Sandinista for drinks. I know, it's always busy on a weekend. But once you get in there you'll have an amazing time, I'm certain of it. The music policy includes all the classics, something to suit most tastes, without venturing down the processed pop route in any shape or form. They also have regular live music, I believe, which is also commendable. However, you mightn't have noticed, they also serve food. What's that? Yes. Where have you been?! (That question is mostly directed at my own foolish self.) They serve the most excellent tapas. Of course, you can go down the route of fajitas, and such like, but on this occasion I wanted a range of foods to stuff. Oh my word. So, firstly, a special mention must be made of the mushrooms in peppercorn sauce. They were absolutely flipping divine - perfectly cooked, soaked in flavour, and the sauce was out of this world. The meatballs were also fabulous, with a delicious tomato sauce, and the garlic bread was beautiful. The crispy pork belly was wonderful, and came with an amazing apricot (?) compote (?!). The patatas were also addictively tasty, especially with melted cheese and spring onion. Of course, the service was fantastic, as ever, but the discovery that there's yet another place to eat fantastically made, freshly cooked, delicious bites is the thing I'll be shouting about for the moment. Dishes come in around £4, which makes it incredibly affordable to try a few different things, and perhaps even splash out on one of their yummy cocktails. Of course, there's the danger that you'd go for tea and not quite make it out until 4am, but hey -it wouldn't be such a bad thing would it? In fact, top idea Batman, Sherlock and Brian Cox, you geniuses. Even the door signage says, "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave." Of course, I'm thinking The Eagles must have been to Leeds. And, given half the chance, I'd say this to be true. I checked-in, but my mind clearly hasn't left them yet. Nom.

They also have an awesome menu so you could pop in for your dinner! In fact you should do that, yes you! Sandis weekend nights have music for everyone but none of it is cheesy ,this always seems to make for a lovely crowd of people. Weekdays are nice and chilled. They normally have a few bands on a Wednesday night and they're always good. Sandis seem to have a good vetting system! Sandinista is awesome i recommend going there everyday

Out steps Shai Nan Kebab! I have been coming here for Kebabs and take aways for at least 6 years and have never been dissapointed. Sadly, last year it was closed for a spell after a fire destroyed most of the inside yet the new place is bigger and better than ever. Most of the skewered kebabs are kept in the chiller fridge for you to salivate over, as well as a great selection of Pakoras/samosa/bahji's. There is nothing done to any of this food in secret- the kitchen is all open plan as well as the prep area so you can see the cleanliness of the food/utensils/staff/prep areas. The skewered kebabs are cooked fresh to order in the tandor so there is a bit of waiting for your order but hey, who doesn't appreciate a wait when you can get to see the life-cycle of the food you are going to eat. The chapatis/rotis/naans are all freshly rolled and cooked to order so again, no 'kept' food. The menu is quite accomodating for most tastes- kebabs/curries/chicken/burgers/fish/chicken portions and then a new selection of desserts and ice cream shakes. Personally, we usually go for the 'Shai Nan Special kebab' which @ £7.50 offers chicken, lamb, shish.donner and masses of salad all wrapped in a freshly griddled naan with lashings of chilli and yoghurt sauce! Definitely one to open the top button of the jeans for! The Mr and i popped by here Sunday eve and got a Lamb tikka naan and I just had a craving for the donner meat and chips- absolutely spot on for both. Even after a 20 min wait we were still happy. Like i said, there are a lot of Take away shops on this shopping parade yet I've never considered trying any of the others as Shai Nan has never let me down and with the regular staff, open-plan kitchen & prep area and a great reputation I can quite justify driving out of my way to go here as I'm guarenteed to get exactly what I want-without fail!

The deli section sells a full menu of sandwiches, soups, cakes and a delicious selection of hot specials. I had a very tasty red Thai curry with jasmine rice just recently. There is a seating area both inside and outdoors to eat at. They serve a lifesaving full English breakfast at a reasonable price, and can be responsible for reactivating your brain, following a night out. The other side of Yum Yum is a convenience store, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, pastries, tinned goods, various snacks and a range of wines and beers. They are significantly overpriced, but that is the cost of convenience. I also think their nearby rival Simpsons stock a far better range of products. All in all, it is a useful place to have around, but there are superior alternatives in the area.

The saviour of so many lunchtimes has been Yum's. They never fail to have something interesting on offer. There are usually several hot options such as pasta bake, burritos and a roast pork baguettes and a couple of really good sandwich specials. Highlights for me have included pulled pork with salad and chipotle mayo and ham, smoked cheese and onion marmalade both on sourdough baguettes. The footling hotdog was also a touch. You can also have your own sandwich made, they have loads of filling options and the cakes look awesome- its like subway if subway sold proper food! They do a large range of American sweets and drinks although every other shop in Leeds seems to offer these now. Yum's also have a massive selection of beers and I believe they open for dinner in the evenings doing pizza etc, if I lived at brewery wharf I wouldn't need to go anywhere else! They are a little expensive when you consider a meal deal at Sainsbury's is three quid but what you get is vastly superior. One of their daily special sandwiches and a can of coke will set you back about a fiver which is pretty good as you'll get something really tasty you will actually enjoy!

If you're bored of the usual system (order, wait for chef to cook, waiter delivers, yawn) then Bulgogi might be worth checking out. I confess, this isn't the first time I've had Korean BBQ, however -- it is Leeds' first and only place to indulge, and indulge you should. At least once. If you're not au fait with the system, allow me to explain. You order the set menu -- the only available choice -- and the staff swiftly bring out your first course of five. To begin, you get a few veggie sushi rolls and gyoza. Then comes the first BBQ course: slices of pork and beef. These are accompanied by three choices of sauce (soy, chilli, and tamarind), and about eight or so side dishes. (Which counts as the second course, I think.) Use the lettuce leaves as the base, chuck in a few bits and bobs in from the sides, add some sauce, BBQ up some meat slices, and get it all mixed in together for mouthfuls of marvellous-ness. My favourite sauce was the tamarind, and my favourite side was the spicy cucumber. You also get a healthy portion of sticky rice, which I'd advise to ration -- you get full so quickly! We, foolishly, assumed meat course numero uno was the main course. Oh dear. A second, even better, course of pork and beef slices then arrived. I don't know what had been done to the beef, but it was delectable -- and the beauty is you can cook it to your own taste! I complimented myself many times on my own barbecue skills. Then came the course of seafood! My word.... By this time I was absolutely stuffed, but we battled on. Because, food. The prawns were amazing; I don't usually like them, but these were delicious. Finally, and this one was a freebie, we were gifted a lamb chop! This only happened because the chef is trying out ideas for a Christmas special, but we were blown away. If he serves that come Christmas you'll be happy as Elf -- I think it was my favourite. Pro tip: Go in over the next few days as I'm sure the chef talked about trying it out on other customers with more marinade. Drinks-wise, I absolutely recommend the plum and honey tea (so, so good in this cold weather) and the Hite Korean lager -- it was really sweet and crisp. I absolutely loved it. Both were great to accompany the food. They also have a few Korean soft drinks that all sounded delicious. I'm a big fan when you can order beyond half a diet coke when it comes to beverages. All in all, I'm surely going back. It's fun, it's fresh, it's tasty. All the staff were lovely and for £23 roughly, I don't think it's a bad deal!

I didn't get to experience the afternoon menu as it was a bit too pricey for me at the time but i went there for lunch. Which only cost me about £10 for the meat and sides. As tradition i had soju (Korean alcoholic drink of choice) which was a bit expensive (i think it was £11 but can't remember and can't find receipt) and this is half the reason of why i didn't give full 5 stars because i loved this place. When the next day went to the Asian supermarket few streets down I spotted the same bottle of soju for 3-4 pounds. Wasn't happy. The other half of the reason that didn't gave a full 5 stars was because the meat was frozen, that didn't stop me from grilling the heck out of it and enjoying every bite but I think it would have been a little better if they had actually defrosted it first or being fresh. Again it was lunch time so it might be different in the afternoon. The sides were lovely and went really well with the meat. I was very happy i got to experience 3 different types of Kimchi of which they make themselves because when i was talking to the waitress she mentioned that they were making at the time in the kitchen a fresh batch. The service was very good and the waitresses were really lovely and helpful. And the whole atmosphere was very nice. Definitely going there again. Small warning: Check their opening times if you plan to go there because they close for few hours between lunchtime and afternoon/evening.
