    Pho tai (beef pho)

Pho sho go here!!! This place has some of the best pho broth ever and they make their own noodles (or at least buy fresh from someone). They also have alcohol if you fancy something with that food. Counter service was friendly and they take eftpos as a bonus. Pho was $15. Not sure if that is pricey for Sydney but super tasty.

    Half eaten (sorry!) beef pho

Always enjoy a good day to try new pho. Mum's Table (fairly) recently opened up within a 100m walk from my place so I figured I had to give it a crack. I simply ordered the beef brisket pho.. Nothing more, nothing less. The pho here is $14... I at first thought 'pho heads would whinge about this' but I stepped back and remembered I was sitting in the heart of Surry Hills. It is fair to say that any dish under $15 in this area is a fair deal. I also got excited in thinking perhaps this particular pho might turn out to be, simply, a deluxe addition to this growingly competitive world of pho. It arrived very quickly to which I was most delighted. First box ticked. There was sriracha ready to go on the table. Second box ticked. My waitress quickly discovered I had no cutlery and made sure of getting onto it pronto. The soup spoon wasn't the deepest of sorts, but certainly was adequate for regular slurpers such as myself. Now for the dish itself. The beef brisket cooked before my eyes which is exactly what we love to see. 3rd box ticked. Now coming back to the $14 price tag. Absolutely and 100% made up for by the sheer volume of beef in my bowl. It was a cow party and all the calfs on farmer Bob's paddock were invited. Apologies to any vegetarians reading this but we pho-goers love a proper serving of meat. Now although the strips of beef were occasionally too large for a single bite, they were soft and tender enough to pull apart into perfect sizes smaller bites. The noodles were on par, and, just like and HIV test... No news is good news! Now for the broth, and for this occasion I wish I knew more about making pho. I truly don't know what or why, but this broth just wasn't quite a 10/10. I would guess that it kinda tastes less authentic... And my absolute best guess would be that other places boil beef bones for longer and Mum's Table may use beef stock from the supermarket. Either way it was certainly still slurpable and I finished all my broth to the last drop. As for the side garnishes.. There were definitely enough sprouts but nowhere near enough fresh chopped chilies or fresh Thai basil. True Pho heads would have certainly had something to say about this. In all, the dish is big and easily worth $14. And although it has 2 minor bits of room for improvement, I will without a doubt be slurping here on the reg.

    The decor was creative!

So.9 is a new Vietnamese place that opened on Danks Street in Waterloo…read more Their theme is a shared menu, and they have different stations for all types of Vietnamese food like pho, spring rolls, pancakes, salads, and the like. The decor is pretty nice and it totally looks the part, it's just too bad the food fails to deliver. Came with 3 others and we got Vietnamese milk coffee, pho, Vietnamese pancakes, and salads. The coffee was alright, it was just OK at best. The pho was pretty disappointing to say the least, the broth tasted like they used a pho stock cube instead of real bones but I can't verify. The pancakes (banh xeo) had bean sprouts that should have been slightly cooked but were just raw A lot of the food looked the part, it just didn't taste the part. Also for the price you pay at $14+ for pho or $15+ for banh xeo...just go to Marrickville or Cabramatta instead.

We were lucky enough to visit SO9 in Waterloo for many reasons. The name might seem like an odd…read morecombination of letters and numbers, which had us curious about the meaning. We learn that SO9 translates to number 9 in Vietnamese. The number 9 is a lucky number and reflects the luck involved in the journey of the restauranteurs, from Vietnam go opening this restaurant. SO9 has an inspired existence, presenting some delicious Vietnamese street food and traditional dishes.Decor wise, the restaurant has an industrial modern feel that is common in many restaurants these days, with neon signage, polished concrete floors and exposed brick which is softened by lighter wooden toned furniture and a number of indoor plants. With an open kitchen allowing for the lovely aromas of the food to fill the restaurant. The staff are also friendly and attentive, we felt very welcome here.SO9 is also a licensed venue with their bar serving a range of beer, cider and wine. There's a range of popular Vietnamese non-alcoholic drinks including sugar cane juice, as well as coffee and milk tea. There are also a bunch of exotic slushies, making for a tough choice. Unfortunately they were out of the coconut, guava and lime. The consolation of coconut lychee and pineapple was very good, there is also the option of boozing these up with vodka or white rum.The assorted rice paper rolls at $15 were fantastic, sizeable, with fresh ingredients and plenty of flavour. In fact, the best we have come across, this was a great start to the meal. The salt and pepper cuttlefish at $15 is also a great snacking option, especially with the dipping sauce, very moreish and we polished this off in no time. The Vietnamese savoury crisp pancakes bahn xeo is always a favourite of ours. We were interested in the crab bahn xeo, but not to be this time, unfortunately this too a popular item that was sold out. In turn the pork and prawn Bahn Xeo was what we had in this visit and at a price of $17, it was certainly generous as it was huge, served in traditional manner with mint, and lettuce to wrap it up and a sweet dipping sauce for added flavour. With their bahn mi baguettes at only $2 made fresh a serve of this a must and was well utilised mopping up the extremely tasty sauce that came with the roast duck $27. This roast duck was an absolute highlight, a beautiful sweet sauce and moist meat, served atop white rice.We also decided on an interesting and tasty stir fry rice noodle dish with Crab, pork, prawn roe. $25 Bahn pho xao cua rieu, flavoursome and very colourful. This is a high quality Vietnamese option in the Danks Street dining precinct of Waterloo, a definite option for a quck bahn mi lunch, to get a good Vietnamese meal or on cold winter nights, we will return to try some of the soup on the menu.
