We were looking for Indian food in Christchurch a very long drive and the best reviewed place seemed to be Mumbaiwala, when we entered it was a Friday evening and it was very busy! To get to the entrance, you have to park in the garage attached to the building and walk down. When we entered we were seated and given menus. The ambiance was so cool and very unique. it mimicked a train station in India, there were posters, lighting, accordingly. When I used the restroom I had to take a video- they even got the noise of a train restroom in India blasting in the restroom. When I ordered I specifically wanted mild food so I specified mild and the waitress explained it's already mild- when I heard that I knew I was in trouble because Indian food mild is spicy to me. I got the dahi puri which was spicer than my liking but flavored well. They also had some drinks and mocktails which look good but I didn't order. I marked this as a 3/5 because the customer service isn't the best, because we know Hindi I overheard a new staff waitress getting yelled at by the owner for messing up and didn't seem the most professional. Flavour-packed, generous portions, great service! Stopped in for a casual lunch and was seriously impressed. The butter chicken was rich and creamy without being overly sweet, and the naan was fresh and fluffy -- straight out of the tandoor. Service was fast, friendly, and the portions were generous for the price. Plenty of vegetarian options too, which is always a win. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu! read more

Show up and be ready for your taste buds to go on an adventure way more exciting than Frodo's Trip to Mordor! *IF YOU DONT LIKE SPICY FOODS - READ THE MENU CAREFULLY* This place packs the heat!! Foe those crazy souls still down to test your mouths limits, you've come to the right place. As soon as you walk in, you'll smell the charcoal burning that's smoking the meats right in front of you. This place makes your dish fresh to order - no hidden microwaves in the back. Every bite I had was better than the last. Tandodi Chicken Wings were smokey, salty, and spicy. Use the lemon wedge provided to give that extra acidity and really take this dish over the edge. Kadai Chicken was thick, complex, tender, and spicy! It was not as sauce-heavy as a butter chicken, but there was enough sauce to be great over rice. We also ordered the Garlic Naan and it was a perfect addition. Green Apple Pickle - I wasn't sure about this at first, but I'm so glad we got this side dish. I enjoy spicy food, but I'm no wildfire warrior that can swallow spice without grimace. These Apple bits were the perfect palate cleanser and really reset my mouth before each dish. Still crunchy, and slightly tart, the apples were refreshing and crisp - a welcome reprieve for a mouth slowly catching on fire. Wow! We had an awesome meal at Mumbaiwala. Although two of us ordered four dishes, we weren't too full because they didn't come with rice and weren't as rich as some Indian food. The Prawn Koliwada was six prawns in amazing spices with a dipping sauce. The Sev Puri are small discs with yummy toppings. Not spicy. The Chaat Dal Chaat were toasted lentils with green apples and other spices. The Palak Panner Tikka was paneer cheese that was lightly charred with spinach, tomato and onion. We didn't feel like going out so ordered take out from Mumbaiwala. I mentioned this only because none of the previous reviews, or indeed the restaurant's own website mentions that this is available. Maybe it's a given in this part of the world. They don't deliver though. I had a very tasty lamb curry with very good garlic naan. My dining companions shared a chicken dish and a veggie option which isn't my cup of darjeeling but whatever makes your day ! Recommended. read more

In my admittedly limited experience, having spent only two weeks in Australia and New Zealand, Mumbaiwala serves up some of the finest Indian food available to Her Majesty's antipodean realms. The vindaloo chicken wings blew me away with their tenderness and flavour. The butter chicken (yes, I know, bog standard) was some of the best I've tasted anywhere. I must ding them for one small thing, though, the "naan chips" were nearly indistinguishable from the crispy noodles served in Chinese restaurants in the States with egg drop soup. Even with this, I can't deduct any stars, the rest of the meal was just too good. Really well done, Mumbaiwala. read more

Good food, bad experience with the service. We booked a table for 8:30 pm on the website, unfortunately they were able to seat us only by 9:15. Our server took the our orders another 30 mins later and by the time we got our food, there was another hour's delay. In their defense, our visit was on a Sat evening and they were definitely very busy. Also, I have to say that our server did everything possible to make it up to us. He gave us one of the appetizers complimentary as well as gave us an discount on the bill. Having said that, I'd rather pay for my food and enjoy the overall experience than go through this experience again. I'd be happy to go back another day, probably a weekday to see the difference in service. read more

Really excellent find. We are foodie Indian Americans from Los Angeles. In Christchurch for 2 nights. Went there last night. Had ginger and chili themed cocktails. The Vindaloo chicken wings was excellent. The waitress said it was spicy hot, but not for our palates. We also had karhai chicken and the special lamb dish. With a regular and a garlic naan. Finished with kulfis. Had leftovers for breakfast next morning. Very good. read more

Excellent prawns with this spicy butter sauce, the best garlic naan bread I've ever eaten, Indian masala chai, and Czech pilsner. That's what I had at Mumbaiwala. The meal was superb, and can even put Indian restaurants in Sydney, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, etc. to shame. What a gem of a find in Christchurch! Service was great, too, they do a great job of being polite and attentive without being overbearing like the tip-dependent staff sometimes are in North America. Great find in Christchurch. Situated in city center this is a great indian dining place. Bombay chucked and butter corn as starters alongwith lime juice was excellent. Tried that dhal makhani and parsi mutton. Both great choices. Highly recommended if you are in Christchurch. read more

Tastiest chaat in town. Paani Poori, Dahi Poori, Dabeli, Puri Chole were all spectacular and authentic. Great service too.

Love the decor and the food was delicious. We tried some new things and they were yummy. The waiter was very helpful in describing the dishes. The homemade mango chutney was smooth, sweet, and perfect with the crispy flat bread. We had the chicken curry; it had just the right amount of heat. Awesome selection and service-- this popular spot was packed on a Friday night, but the staff did a great job managing the crowd. Plenty to Kingfisher flowing to wash down the spicy dishes, and they've even got a great butter chicken for us novices. Would recommend in a heartbeat. read more

The same sentiments are from customers -Vijay Shekhar - Husahnpreet Kaur The behavior of the owner exactly mimics the name of the restaurant "mumbaiwala" Which basically depicts street person with no customer centricity.Very arrogant and rude . No manners on how to deal with customers. The owner has Absolutely no idea about being customer focus This person Needs to stay in Mumbai rather than in a place like Christchurch I had very good impression about people in NZ during my Trip so far but this owner really puts a black spot on my total impression Having said that my 99% experience in NZ was just fantastic. I am so so so glad that we left the restaurant without eating their and then were suggested one of the best Indian restaurants in Christchurch called Coriander. Thanks for the owners arrogance and his Mumbai tone , I will definitely not be recommending mumbaiwala to anybody in USA and being in field of public relations can at-least help over few thousand people to stay away from this restaurant and arrogant / rude behavior of the owner.
