They race their cars up and down Dartmouth with very little concern of getting in trouble. They drag race through the neighborhoods with cars that are so loud they rattle windows. They leave trash and "shooter" booze bottles on the sidewalks and in yards. The cut across corner lot homes with zero respect for lawns and personal property. They run around on very loud miniature motorcycles in small packs and harass people on the "no motorized vehicle" walking paths. All in all, sharing a neighborhood with a Denver Public High School is very problematic. Plus, it's an eyesore that looks like a prison.

When I started my internship at Humanex Academy, it started out as just an internship that was…read morerequired to earn my master's degree in clinical psychology. However, after being here for just a few days, I quickly realized that I just joined a community that would shape my career forever. From the postcards that teachers are able to write students just to give them a little boost for the day to the amazing art projects that students are supported in making, Humanex knows how to impact every student that attends. As the clinical intern, I check in with students who are needing a little extra support as well as work with students who need help navigating relationships with peers and teachers. Adolescence is arguably the most critical period in a person's life. During this time, adolescents are learning skills that are necessary for higher education or work, psychological autonomy, forming close friendships, and developing a sense of self identity. This time can be a really exciting and challenging time because they are experiencing physical, cognitive, and social changes. Between Mrs. Cahill, the principal, and Dr. Tom Welch, the clinical psychologist, Humanex is very accommodating to those changes and challenges that are presented during this time. They understand that the stimulation and stress that is presented at public schools are not a good match for everyone, and they put a great deal of effort into making Humanex stand out compared to its larger counterparts. During my experience at Humanex Academy, I have learned about the importance of confidence. Confidence is often formed and solidified during adolescence. I am happy that I have been able to aid in the development of confidence for many different students as well as been able to learn about how a compassion and caring can go a long way when working with adolescents.

Very disappointed in the way that Mike Davis and the Board have dealt with COVID. While other local…read moreschools are normalizing, they are telling parents that kids will be wearing masks and social distancing when school begins in August, 2021. By then, most high-risk folks will have been vaccinated. But, CA continues to put the needs of others over the social and emotional wellbeing of their students. There's talk that the kids will be able to "vaccinate their way out of wearing masks and social distancing in the fall." Some parents are not interested in this possibility until more information about vaccinating younger people becomes known. If you don't want to vaccinate your younger students, I'd look into another school.

The Colorado Academy community has helped raise our three boys. At CA, they have been able to take…read moreacademic risks, try out new athletic options, and dive deep into music, theater, photography and choir. They have grown up as responsible citizens who are open to civil discourse and new ideas. Due to the phenomenal outdoor offerings, they have also learned how to fly fish, mountain bike and camp. The faculty is truly exceptional and cares about each and every student.

Administration and staff are terrible at communicating with families. When they do communicate,…read moredifferent staff say opposite things. It's like the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. They can't honor basic legal obligations either and when called out, they assure you everything is fine but won't actually make any efforts to fix things. The current principal, Benicia Wilson, is atrocious- dishonest, rude, and seemingly incompetent (or maybe just plain lazy).
