This is a great park. It's one of the only areas of Lowell where you can actually "climb" a hill,…read morealthough with all the trees in summer you won't get much of a view ;) You can catch glimpses of the mountains of New Hampshire if yoou're lucky though. The park is about 35 acres, 22 of which are wooded, meaning unkept. There are some awesome old gnarly trees growing in there, and lots of birch and maple I think. It's a great palce to get away from "the city" and be in nature for awhile. I didn't see any facilities like playgrounds or bathrooms, so if you bring kids, make 'em pee ahead of time, and bring some toys or something. No dogs allowed in the wooded area according to a sign, but we saw dogs (on leashes) in there anyway. It felt so good to be up high again after living in Colorado, even though the hike to the "summit" only takes about 5 minutes. BONUS: just down the street is a hand-held car wash with vacuums. Part of the Belividere neighborhood, this park is definitely worth a visit at least once per season just to see how it changes. There's a paved trail to the top of the hill so you don't have to climb through the woods unless you want to. BONUS 2: Geocaching spots nearby...

Other favorites: swings, tall structure with multiple slides(and slide types) and a large climbing structure. A favorite among many families in the area - I was shocked to not see it on a yelp page. They are working on the field part so unable to kite fly like before but would imagine it would be opening soon. There's a small loop around the field as well for a quick stroll. Plenty of parking to be found and couple of picnic tables throughout including a few under a covered structure. There's also a small business that looks like it has snacks(fairly new but prior to the new owners it was a coffee shop). I only wish they had restrooms but they do have port a potties.

Rynne Beach in Lowell is part of the Vandenberg Esplanade, better known as The Boulevard. This…read morepark is on the Merrimack River in Lowell and includes a long walking path along the water and an open-air stage across from Heritage Ice Cream. At the far end is the Lowell University Boat House. At the other end is Rynne Beach. The water isn't crystal clear (it's Lowell), but it really isn't very dirty. It's a nice sandy beach, good for children and adults. There's usually a life guard on duty in season. There are restrooms right behind it. There's a tiny parking lot there and a slightly larger one just on the other side of the stage area (next to the beach), but parking is allowed on the street. Picnics/bbqs and camping are allowed on the grassy areas on either side of the beach.

On Monday nights, Heritage Ice Cream (across the street) sponsors free music concerts. There are…read moreother events on the other days of the week, too. There's a paved foot path along the river. There are lots of benches and there's a small yet decently maintained beach with public restrooms. There are a couple of small parking lots that fill up quickly, but it's okay to park along the street. The paved foot path along the river is over one mile long. Great for urban hiking, walking, strollers, exercise.

There's always something going on here, especially in the summer - concerts on Mondays, Motorcycle…read morenight on Tuesdays, Monsters and Mini (jacked up trucks and Mini Coopers!) night, free movie nights on Wednesdays, kids night on Thursdays... Not to mention all the summer events like the African festival and Southeast Asian Water fest, among so many others. This is a nice, paved, well-maintained multipurpose path with lots of benches to sit on while you enjoy the beautiful Merrimack river. Well-lit at night with street lamps, it's the perfect place to watch a sunset while you enjoy an icecream cone from Heritage ice cream across the street. It's wonderful to see all the regulars while you walk and all the families enjoying the city. Arguably the best free thing you can do in Lowell on an evening.

The family were in New England for an extended weekend and I knew I needed to carve out a minute to…read morepay my respects to a writer that's been influential to me and my friends. First stop: Edson Cemetery (about 10 minutes away) to visit his burial plot, which would prove to be more profound and interesting to me. (I'd recommend that and skipping this park, to be honest.) Lowell seems to be a town struggling and it was heartbreaking to see so many people suffering and asking for help at almost every corner as I tried to get here. Then when I got to the park itself there were a few homeless people on the outer benches which made me feel like an idiot when I pulled out my phone to document my visit. All that being said... I think it's cool (and meaningful) that 'Ti Jean' was given a memorial park in his hometown. The park's small. Some benches are spaced between concentric columns. There was also a ping-pong table as well as plenty of trees off to the side. Some of the columns that have etched quotes and tidbits regarding Kerouac are faded/damaged and hard to read. Parking was an issue. (Litter all around was another.) Even the most devoted fans of Sal Paradise might not dig coming here. (If I were much braver I would've loved to swing by Arthur's Diner across the street which looked EXACTLY like the kind of place the Beats would've frequented to ramble and rant and preach and maybe even do a bit of writing about their most recent experiences out and about in the world.)

On the way back from Lowell, I decided to ride all the way home to the city. I was able to mainly take back roads and trails (Bruce Freeman to Reformatory to Minuteman), which was very cool!
