I have never been a fan of Brumby's or Baker's Delight with their jam and cream buns, cheesymite…read morescrolls and date scones. I prefer to go to specialist patisseries for baked goods and breads. Bumbleebee Bakery at Eight Mile Plains is the exception to the rule. As a bakery, it does a mean trade on meat pies, sausage rolls and those nasty, artery blocking jam and cream buns. There are also some scrumptious cakes and macaroons available. The macaroons are $2.20 each or six for $13. They come in an assortment of flavours and the fillings are more buttery than creamy. There is also a small Chinese baked goods section with sweet breads filled with red bean paste, BBQ pork buns and coconut buns. It's sort of like a sampler selection from Breadtop. To top it off, the staff are always friendly and cheerful. Usually they're out the back whipping up fresh new cakes but will immediately bustle out as soon as you ring the bell. What more can one ask from a neighbourhood bakery? Bumblebee gets five out of five from me for being the first decent bakery on Brisbane's far South side.

Even the reliable chain Spoons deli cafe closed down at Garden City after about a year. There just didn't seem to be the right market for a gourmet deli in outer southern suburbia. Plenty Continental Deli has proven everyone wrong. I've been going to this deli now for the past two years, admittedly at first in an effort to help a new foodie business, but as their business grew it genuinely became an excellent purveyor of delicious foods. The business owners are both knowledgeable and adventurous with their stock and carry a huge range of olives, cheeses, salamis and ice creams. They're not scared to experiment either. Last year, they started selling gelati in cups but replaced it a few months later with a bakery section. These days, they've extended their bakery section to include Roman baked goods out the front of their shop on weekends. This is also a great place to go if you want to put together a food hamper for a gift. There are some excellent Turkish delights, chocolates, mixed nuts, oils and dressings. Service can be a little slow at times, especially if you get stuck behind a customer wanting different types of meats and antipasto. It's great if you're happy to browse but it can get frustrating if you're in a rush.

Many times I've just gone to Plenty for inspiration and ideas on what to make for dinner. It's hard to walk out of there with only one thing though. Best deli in Brisbane by far and I feel so lucky that it's part of my local shops!
'Have you been to Pavarotti?' 'Sorry-where?'…read more'Pavarotti - the new bakery on Warrigal Road. You have to go.' I had my orders, only what I found on Warrigal road wasn't an Italian bakery called Pavarotti but a Malaysian bakery called Papparoti. All the kids are lining up for one thing and one thing only at Papparoti - their steaming, salty-sweet coffee bun with its lightly burnt sugary crust. You can see the staff turning out the freshly baked buns to meet the high demands. Every hour, they're rolling out the dough, letting the dough rise, piping the sugary swirl on top and popping trays in and out of the over. There's nothing better than their bun and coffee deal for less than $5 on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Of course, Papparoti also has a range of coffee and tea options but I've never been able to get past the coffee and bun. It's a simple formula but it works. If Eight Mile Plains is too far south, don't fret. With their winning formula, I wouldn't be surprised to see Papparoti franchises popping up all over the city.
