Lovely old quay with the original fishermen's cottages The boats still leave from here and the nets & lobster pots are piled up ready to go. There is a fresh fish stall where you can buy the local catch. We always buy a pack for the freezer.
There is an old smugglers inn, Haven House Inn, where you can have a pint & a bite to eat.
You can catch the ferry ( March to October, varies) over to Mudeford beach on the other side of the narrow channel into Christchurch Harbour.
It is almost like a time warp with children crabbing (buckets & lines sold at the shop), the sailing boats bobbing about on their moorings in the harbour. It is fascinating just watching the water flow through the narrow channel, just sea at high tide becoming mud flats with wader birds at low tide, you almost feel that you could walk across to Mudeford Beach but the current is treacherous here so no swimming from the quayside. There are good swimming beaches at Mudeford Beach and in the opposite direction at Avon Beach towards Highcliffe.
There is excitment if you want it, A Bay Blast !!! 20 mins going far too fast in an inflatable boat. I find it a bit scary, but rest of the family think it is exhilarating. Around £10. I think they do longer trips but not for me, I'm a coward.
There is a large car park but it is pay & display so watch the time. read more
