It took me a long while to try the Muddy Cow but glad I eventually did! They always have 2 for 1s which ends up being a great deal! And that's the reason we visited there more frequently. But when we were there, we did try some food too. I will say, most of the food we ordered was decent, nothing to write home about but I was very happy to find chicken wings that I really enjoyed there! I want to say the flavor was whiskey something, because when my husband chose that flavor I was like meh, fine. But yum! So glad he did choose that flavor! Great no-nonense gastro pub! 2 for 1 drinks all the time (limited exceptions like shots) and 2 for 1 pizzas. Average prices on food and drinks. Taste is decent; it's what I would expect from a gastro pub. I don't think I would ever need to come back here. The drinks were alright, perhaps a bit watered down, but the service at the bar was pretty good otherwise. The food was extremely hit or miss. Both the pepperoni and the sausage pizzas were very marginal. They were so disappointing that I ordered the chicken tenders instead. The waffle fries were delicious, albeit a $3 up charge or something close to that (of which I wasn't informed), and the toast was solid. I'm not one for coleslaw, so I can't provide any review there, but the chicken tenders were decent. The tenders were slightly tough, as well as being too thick and strangely-shaped for my taste. If I have to choose between using a fork and knife or resembling someone gnawing on a giant turkey leg at the state fair, clearly the tenders are just not ideal. Did I have an actively poor experience? No, but it certainly could have been a lot better. I guess I expected more out of a restaurant with such a nice exterior. read more

A cozy place to get a drink and some finger foods. Not too loud and not too crowded. Stay far far away from the American Poutine, it was so salty my group only tried a little. By the time we left it was almost entire order left, told the waitress and even she agreed the poutines are salty. Burgers were only ok, they put so much sauce that it made the bottom bun super soggy. Chicken wild rice soup wasn't bad, it was good to have on a rainy chilly day. They do have all day 2 for 1 on beers but I'm not a drinker. Service was slow on the slower side. Our waitress didn't check back on us after we got our food. Have ordered takeout and been in for seated service. My review will include both. Takeout: fast and accurate times given for order completion. Definitely a plus. Takeout order included 2 orders of boneless wings and the duck wontons. Only major disappointment with Takeout was the sauce for the wontons was forgotten. Sit-down: loud restaurant to be in. Bar was completely packed, so was content sitting in a booth. However, they only had one poor girl trying to run around and serve everyone. What's more disappointing is there was another person, who looked like a server, just walking around the whole restaurant doing nothing. We flagged her down to ask if we could just get waters, since those hadn't even been provided. Were told "your server will have to do that". Just felt bad for the server who was actually working. Regarding your Cottage Grove location, there is an ongoing problem with the smoking situation on the outdoor space/patio. There have always been NO SMOKING signs posted on all sides, but they are being ignored on a regular basis. In fact, there are even ashtrays on several tables. Why? Why is the policy not being enforced. I am allergic to smoke and was promised the patio is now all non smoking, but again today, I saw two people smoking on the patio on a windy evening as the wind blew their smoke toward my table. I will stop being a customer until this improves. Either remove the signs, or enforce them. At least then I will know it is smoking and I won't sit out there. This is very unfair to the customers to have a policy that is being ignored by not only selfish customers but the staff/managers who let it continue. read more

I really like Muddy Cow! Their is such a variety of food and options to choose from and every meal I've had had been good. The pickle fries and the cheese curds are for sure a must try; we now rotate between the two every time we go. The service has always been good, even when it's busier - quick, multiple check ins, friendly. The atmosphere is more sports bar - mix between bar and restaurant- where some people are there just for the drink deals while others bring their whole family for dinner. Would like to comment on the three employees that worked this evening. Aubrey was our waitress and she was very attentive constantly checking to see if we needed anything. She was excellent! We also noticed Levi hustling to all his tables. He was not our waiter, but could not help observe his attention to his customers. Lastly, the host (cannot remember his name) but he was amazing. This young man opened the door when we arrived and never stopped moving all evening. He was clearing tables and washing everything down. You are fortunate to have these employees. The biggest thing that makes me not give this place a 5 star review is cause the service is very spotty. Our waitress almost seemed surprised every time we looked at her with the look of "are you going to stop here", and we basically always have to ask someone to get our waiter to get our check whenever we come, but we always come back for 2 reason. The food is always good, even though there is a wait a lot of the times, but the food always comes out hot so it's hard to fault anyone on that, since it comes out hot you know they're really just either slow or short staffed in the kitchen, and secondly the always 2 for 1's. (Shoutout to Michele, Nick, and Leah) Who says no to 2-for-1s? Whether it's your choice of tap beer or mixed drinks, they are all day long every day. (If you want a shot, get 2 on the rocks. It'll be cheaper.) Sure, the bar fills up pretty quickly. The place has only been open a few weeks and many people in town have been justifiably waiting for the opening. Cool your jets, you'll get a spot if you're patient. The nightlife atmosphere is great too with darts and TouchTunes to keep you busy as you slug down your double-fist beverages of choice. Wow! This place was not good at all. If you are going just for buy one get one beers- and maybe some fries your in the clear, Don't bother with the food. I got the strawberry salad. Know it was February I did not expect the berry's to be perfect- what I got was ONE strawberry cut up on old lettuce that was brown, I do say it was coated well with a good dressing and feta cheese was well distributed. The rubbery chicken was clearly a pre made breast from Sysco and reheated in a microwave- it was gross to say the least! But what really made this salad horrible was the stale candied walnuts that tasted like and after taste of cardboard. My husband got the rodeo burger he said it fine, nothing to write home about. The inside was rather busy and did not appear to comply with social distancing guidelines. There are some good weekend deals on drinks and food. We love the wings- the blackberry BBQ flavor is particularly good. My husband enjoyed his bloody Mary. Our server was friendly, but we were forgotten about towards at the end of our meal. Immediately a server came and took their drink orders., I went to the host stand to ask if we were going to have a server, I was assured they'd send someone right over. First time at the Muddy Cow. Place was clean and roomy. We seated ourselves and in a hurry the waitress was their and very pleasant. She had our drinks to our table in a couple minutes. It was a Friday so we had the Fish..It was Cod and they use their own beer batter. It was two huge pieces and coleslaw along with a large portion of seasoned fries. It was fantastic. The good news is that neither Mrs Carnivore nor I were poisoned. After missing the anticipated opening date by only about six months, a new restaurant in Cottage Grove was an exciting idea, and the Carnivore is always interested in trying a new burger place. While looking at the menu, we noticed that apparently cheeseballs are a big thing here, though they are not on the menu, and no one mentioned them to us. We watched an employee fill a popcorn machine with cheeseballs from a somewhat large bag. Whatever the cheeseball magic is, we were not invited to participate, and the cheeseballs themselves are not made at the restaurant. The Carnivore ordered his usual bacon hamburger and was happy to see that all burgers are double burgers. He noticed that the menu also advertised that all pizzas are BOGO. Some head-scratching ensued, and the pizza option was set aside as sounding a tad too adventurous and risky. What does it say about a pizza that requires the ordering party to accept a second one at no additional charge? Perhaps just cut the price in half, unless it has to do with something other than price...... The fries that would normally accompany the burger were upgraded to onion rings, which the Carnivore routinely does. Mrs. Carnivore ordered a chicken sandwich and kept her fries. The beverages that came from the Coke fountain were as expected, and the highlight of the meal. Be aware that if you do not like Coke products and do not wish to consume an adult beverage, you are pretty much out of luck. 3M says the tap water is drinkable, though, so there's that. Upon receiving our "food," we were confused by the shiny buns, and soon realized that they had been brushed with--or dipped in--oil, grease, or something that enhanced nothing, but made a trip to the hand-washing station a requirement. The "food" arrived in small fryer baskets lined with some kind of paper that becomes completely transparent when exposed to the amount of grease that comes with a burger or a chicken sandwich (not fried chicken). The chicken sandwich that Mrs. Carnivore ordered was greasy, despite not being fried, and her fries were dusted with a decent seasoning, and soaked in more grease. My burger was dry, the mix of meats used to create it is definitely not my favorite, and it was quite greasy as well, despite being so dry. The onion rings were crunchy, but super greasy and in need of being smaller. The ratio of onion to batter was way off due to the enormous pieces of onion that were dipped in batter. These onion pieces need to be cut in half and perhaps not be so thick, either. The overall effect was unpleasant. Our server was completely cheery and helpful, and this review should absolutely not reflect poorly on any of the staff we interacted with. That said, the staff might do well to invest in Dawn liquid, as apparently that is the preferred method of removing oil from hapless creatures. When we were done, and in the Carnivoremobile, I turned to Mrs. Carnivore, who stated that we did not need to return to this establishment ever. I replied with confusion that I didn't understand why, with a Culver's within sight of this place, anyone would go here instead of Culver's. Culver's is fast, friendly, inexpensive, and definitely has quality standards. After this experience, I took my own advice and drove the tenth of a mile to Culver's and washed the bad flavors and grease out of my mouth with a malt and some cheese curds. Yes, the cheese curds at Culver's were less greasy than literally anything we ate at the Muddy Cow. The burgers at Culver's are demonstrably better and about the same size, but cheaper than the Muddy Cow. Mrs. Carnivore and I agree that we rather miss the Ruby Tuesday that once served good tasting food at this location some years ago, and should we be hungry and in this part of the world again, we will visit Culver's instead. In summary, if you are low on grease and your taste buds have died, go to the Muddy Cow. If you are hungry and have the slightest respect for your digestive system, choose Culver's instead. read more
