"I like to do just like the rest, I like my sugar sweet But…read moreguarding fumes and making haste It ain't my cup of meat" (Bob Dylan) If a big cup of meat is your cup of tea, you'll be very happy at the Newington Meat Center. Conveniently located between Route 9 and the Berlin Turnpike, they've been serving up hot dogs, sausages, deli meats and cheeses, a big selection of house-smoked meats, prepared foods, steaks, ground beef, seafood, chicken and sandwiches since 1964. They sell bundled packages of burgers, steaks, and chicken to feed an army at your next barbecue. And if you happen to be in the market for frozen cubes of goat, well, they have that too. In all seriousness, their product selection is quite impressive. We stopped by yesterday and picked up two sandwiches, a container of chili and a half sour pickle for $26. My turkey and pepper jack cheese sandwich was excellent. First of all, the amount of fresh and delicious turkey was very impressive, I mean it was really piled sky high on a soft and fresh bulkie roll. My wife's ham and cheese was an equally generous sandwich. Half a sandwich was all we needed for lunch. Oh, and that pickle was pretty darned good too. I haven't tried the chili yet, but based on the overall excellence of our experience, I'm sure it will be fantastic.

They take the time to get to know what your needs are and have value bundles for every budget. We went an ala carte and chose a selection of TBone, Chicken, Pork Chops and deli meat all cut to our preference. We saved quite a lot compared to our normal supermarket buy basically for the same quality! We will be back!

But if you walk to the far left side of the market in search of the restrooms, you'll see a sign and a downward staircase that will bring you here. It carries food items from Spain, Italy, and the Mediterranean area. Lots of canned fish, pasta, oils, vinegars, crackers, sauces, olives , meats and cheese and the like. It reminded me a lot of the little grocery store inside the old Costa Del Sol restaurant. There were some freebie cheese and cracker samples, and a sweet and friendly young lady there to greet us. We were the only one in the store, and I sure hope the market adds The Grocer to their website and list of vendors to encourage more customers to visit. Surprising to us, was that the pricing was very reasonable!! We picked up a jar of fig jam for $6.49 and a big 25 ounce jar of Fra Diavlo sauce for $4.99. I am certain that every future trip we make to the Parkville Market will end with a walk down that staircase into the Grocer. Hope to see you there !

The Grocer, now upstairs at Parkville Market, is a very small specialty food market. The Grocer is too small to provide a one stop shopping experience. Rather, you're more likely to go there when you're already at the Market and you need a few high end items for guests or niche home cooking. Example, if you're cooking a Spanish-themed meal and you want better sherry vinegar and Spanish olive oil than you can buy at your near home grocery, you can get that at the Parkville Market Grocer. That can be very convenient.

"Walking in the wild west end Walking with your wild best…read morefriend" (Dire Straits) We found the West End Farmer's Market behind Farmington Avenue between Clemens Place Apartments and the Mark Twain House. There is excellent signage on Farmington Avenue that leads you to a big lot behind the market. We saw a smallish number of eclectic vendors - a Jamaican food stand, a bakery, a few produce stands, a jewelry stand, an artwork stand, a Hartford Library on Wheels truck, and more. We made two purchases - a Nutella babka from Manchester's Wicked Good Bakes and a Jerk Barbecue Mushroom Patty Panada from Hartford's The Ital Juicery Company. I had an absolute blast at the Ital Juicery stand. They had three generations of charming and delightful women behind the counter. That Patty Panda (sort of a cross between an Empanada and a Jamaican Patty) was a good-sized portion, somewhat justifying the hefty $10 price tag, but the flavor was amazing. Smoky, savory, and spicy, I mean sneaky spicy. Not sure what kind of peppers were in there, but if you told me they were Jamaican Scotch Bonnets I would not be surprised. That afterburn lasted over half an hour. I'll definitely be on the lookout for The Ital Juicery Company when I make the rounds of upcoming Farmer's Markets. As for the West End Farmer's Market, they're open on Tuesdays between June and September from 4pm-7pm. The hours change slightly to 3pm-6pm in October. PRO TIP Five stars for their community service vibe. "The West End Farmers' Market of Hartford believes that everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy and delicious food". To that end, they match SNAP/EBT spending, effectively doubling the amount a buyer can use there.

The West End Farmers Market is the best Farmers Market of all CT!!…read more I went to 3 Farmers Markets today. This is truly what I have been looking for. Native healing herbs. Friendly, knowledgeable and willing to share suggestions with the community. Kind and supportive. Every table I touched was so passionate about what they have grown, or made to offer. To future customers I would like to share don't ever judge a book by its cover. The road work did not stop me. So glad I found my way. From the freshest fruit of the season all the way to the Maple Syrup, Sour Dough. Micheal and his abundant happy herbs, jewelry and soap. The comfrey plants were such a joy to my eyes. Healing through herbs is the way we're supposed to heal. Coexist with the plant kingdom. The community at this market was nothing but love Looking forward to my next return back to CT
