Get on here on the way up toward Washington Heights. It serves the B and C Trains. This shares the same track as the A Train, but that often runs express so it doesn't stop here unfortunately. Not to be confused with another station on 116th in Harlem. Over by Malcolm X Boulevard will you find that. Here it's a little busier. This station is pretty close to Columbia University and some other stuff. Basic station with a classic setup that's annoying. It matters which side of the street you enter on. There's no crossovers inside and you'll have to exit and go across the street to get to the other side if you enter wrong.

Now, the station services the 2 and 5 trains, where the lines further going into The Bronx split to either head to Dyre Avenue or Wakefield-241st Street. Its street level provides opportunity to change platforms and it's also ADA compliant, which is great because this station is one of the closest to The Bronx Zoo! You'll see wonderful glass and stone mosaics as well as laminated windows with multidisciplinary artist Luisa Caldwell's elegant 2011 artwork "Station Villa" throughout this lower level. I have taken it so many times over the years and today I used it again to head to Brooklyn. The trains come often and it is one of those stations where you never feel like you are waiting forever. I like that it has elevators, escalators, and stairs because it makes getting around simple no matter what you need. The station feels safe every time I am there. There are always people around, from commuters to families to tourists passing through. The area is full of visitors because there are so many NYC attractions nearby, so it never feels empty or isolated. The neighborhood around it is lively with Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty ferries, the Charging Bull, and the whole Financial District right there. It is clean, bright, and easy to navigate, and it has become one of the stations I rely on the most when I am moving around the city.

In the 1970s the station had a major overhaul for doubling the subway station capacity with new routes and in 2020 Bowling Green became a test site for MTA's first hearing induction loop on a subway platform! The station features rotating display of photographic artwork! It showcases rarely seen views of the MTA bridges through illuminated lightboxes in the mezzanine. There are a variety of routes that runs through the MTA - Bowling Green Subway Station 4 Train - runs all times, stopping at Bowling Green on its way between the Bronx and Brooklyn 5 Train - Runs all times except late nights. On certain late nights, the 5 does not serve Bowling Green, where the services ends at the Brooklyn Bridge City Hall This is a great station, and it's right next to the Staten Island Ferry!

This station is one of 3 or 4 that were totally renovated on the R-line several years ago,…read morere-opening around 2017. I've visited them all and they are all really nice. Each has improved seating, with "stand up boards" that let you simply lean without fully sitting. The bench seats have arms to help us old heads pry our bodies out of a sitting position. There is also improved recessed lighting that is not quite as harsh as the old fluorescent bulbs. The displays are also bright and back lit now, with some handy USB chargers if you need one in a pinch. Finally, each of the refurbished stations has some interesting and quite pretty art installation. It just looks so much better! In fact, when I stepped off the train the other day, I almost felt like I was in another cities metro system. It just looks clean and slick. That's a pretty big score for the MTA. Commuters and tourists should use it and enjoy it....you could do a lot worse.

The "M" train use to run with the "R" back in 1987, but as time went on the "M" no longer ran with the "R" in Brooklyn due to MTA's budget cuts in 2010. On the weekends and late nights the "D" & "N" provide extra service (unless stated otherwise) to help the "R" since it acts as a Shuttle train that terminates at 36th St & Bay Ridge-95th St while it skips 53rd & 45th Sts towards 36 St but stops at these two stations only if it's going towards Bay Ridge.

This station features beautiful old tile work on the walls and on the platform floors. Very different from most of the other MTA stations. There is even a picture box here with city scenes that looks like it was a long time ago art installation. Other than that it's pretty empty later at night and can give off a creepy vibe if alone. I noticed the safety mirror has also been removed on the stairwells.

Franklin Street is an old MTA station that's cool to look around. It just is a station of course…read more Sure there's not that much. Cold or hot. The trains come fairly often. Has cool tiles and stuff like most older stations do. It serves the 1 Train. This is kind of a confusing place if you don't know the correct way. Be sure you enter on the correct side of the street. There's no crossover inside so it means you would have to go back out and go across the street and pay there. If you have an unlimited MetroCard, the mistake doesn't hurt. Pay attention to the sides of the street. They take advantage of people who don't know so they squeeze more money from these victims.

A little less easy to transfer between Express and Local in the same direction, since they are on separate platforms, although this station is ADA compliant with full accessibility. I typically transfer alternatively at TimeSquare or similar which don't require a platform change. Note - There is elevator work being done, which should be completed in early 2026. That being said, when your here check out the public art in the crossunder. In 2003, MTA installed the series of glass mosaic murals by American multimedia artist Eric Fischl called "Garden of Circus Dreams," which depict dream episode of a commuter in a circus visit fantasy. These pieces a nod to the spectacles held at Madison Square Garden overhead. Worth checking out!

It will be interesting to see what replaces it. The system is huge and gets you to places at a most reasonable rate. It takes some practice to know which train and platform to use, The system is over 100 years plus old. The newer stations have elevators but it is mainly stairs in the original stations. Also washrooms are few and difficult to find at most stations. If you cannot walk far, I would advise using another mode of transport. Many trains have standing room only.
