Upon entry i knew things were going downhill when I witnessed a gentlemen outside with shades on and a lime green blazer with gold teeth. Upon entry I was hit with the smell of smoke. I handed my card over and was not told the prices nor my total. When I asked for a receipt I was told they do not provide receipts. After getting my daughters skates on which I am pretty sure they do not spray ewwwwwwww she proceeded to skate. Now we skate often and am upset I forgot hers and are used to a good Kidz Bop playlist however these people were playing at full speed everything inappropriate including "Pound Town" I was shocked. I wasn't surprised when my daughter and her little friends came over to notify us of a fight in the corner by the bathrooms. I will never return, they run this place like the slum it is located in versus providing some type of kid appropriate quality establishment.

I attended their 2011 season opener which was an expo-style event featuring each of CCRG's home teams -- Junkyard Dolls, Night Terrors, Mobtown Mods, and Speed Regime -- in 30-minute matches against regional adversaries like the D.C. Roller Girls and the Mason-Dixon Roller Vixens from Hagerstown, Maryland. In all seriousness, don't worry about being new to the game. There were a plethora of derby girls wandering around eager to extol the virtues of the sport. It was in this way that I learned that roller derby matches are actually called "bouts" because they are a fight to the finish. Each bout is broken into thirty-minute halves. Those halves consist of an undetermined number of two-minute jams. Consider the jams like a round in boxing. Each jam is a race between the two teams to score points. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. Simple...yet, electrifying. Trying to describe everything we saw that night without using visual aids is almost pointless. But, believe me when I tell you that watching the ladies whiz around the track, while backed by the powerful funk of an unseen DJ and two quick-witted announcers, is an activity that is fun for all ages. This was our first CCRG bout, so we couldn't leave the venue without hitting the souvenir table. Their merchandise is extensive, including buttons, lighters, bumper stickers, jewelry, posters, et cetera. I bought a fitted zippered hoodie for $35. My boyfriend bought a T-shirt, but balked a bit at the $20 price tag. So, I will tell you what the gal at the table told us: CCRG runs entirely on the work of its skaters. Everything from the scheduled season to the laying down of the skater's track is handled by the team and nobody gets paid. Therefore, every purchase is essentially a donation that affords these ladies an opportunity to play the sport they love. Hooked yet? Well, the Charm City Roller Girls bout once a month at the Du Burns Arena in Canton. You can visit their Website or their Facebook page to obtain tickets and more information. Admission can also be purchased at the door, but I wouldn't risk it. The joint was packed 30 minutes before the first bout even started. Tickets range from $10 general admission to $25 VIP. MissionTix is their online vendor and charges an additional one to two dollars as a processing fee. Either way, tickets are a bargain considering you get two full hours of roller derby with every purchase. On a final note, be prepared to park on the street. The Du Burns Arena does have off-street parking, but you may have trouble finding a space. Do not let this deter you. When my 4th grade classmates were reading "Little House of the Prairie", I was doing battle with the X-men and soaring the skies with Voltron. While my 7th grade girlfriends were wearing lace leggings and tragically teasing their hair like Madonna, I sported a peek-a-boo hairdo, a la Veronica Lake and was mad at my parents because they wouldn't let me legally change my name to "Fenny Rita Hayworth". In college, I learned to do body shots at frat parties, all the while longing to return to my room to finish the H.G. Wells inspired dress that I wanted to wear for my oral presentation on Edwardian mores. Yes, I was an odd duck. Then, my best friend entered into my life. A little punk, a little rock and roll but 100% amazing, she loved all of the fringe and crazy things that I loved. Comics, burlesque, pin-up...and roller derby. So why am I miffed? Because, although I have always been infatuated with all of these things, *she* was the one that ALWAYS discovers the underground (although now, less underground) outlets for these hobbies. Take for instance roller derby. I've been a huge fan of roller derbies since I stumbled upon an old bootleg VHS tape of an old 1948 roller derby match when I was 13. It captured my imagination and made me even more despondent that the all the "cool" eras were eras that have long since passed me by. In the intervening years, I had since learned to reconcile this disappointment and found other outlets for my frustration... ...that is, until my BFF called me up one day and was all "OMG OMG OMG! There is a Baltimore ALL GIRLS ROLLER DERBY TEAM!!!" WHAT?!?!?! HOW??? WHEN??? And most importantly...WHY NOW that I'm too out of shape, decrepit and slow to join the team?!?!?! Regardless, at the very next match, I booked it up there with the drama-llama (less said about her the better), and sat on the dirty and dusty floor of the roller rink, held spell-bound by the awesome ferociousness (and adorably cute - yet functional) outfits that the Charm City Roller Girls wore. These girls were fierce - and not Tyra Banks' "smile-with-your-cheeckbones-fierce" - this was *real* fierceness. Grunting and screaming, they would push, elbow, shove, their opponents out of the way, whipping their teammates to the forefront and boldly throwing themselves in harms way for the advantage. In a bar fight, these are the girls I want to get my back. Trust. They threw each other into brick walls (one girl broke her collarbone right there) and got in the ref's faces when they dared to call a foul on that (heh). In short, it was fast, it was brutal, and it was GLORIOUS. Shortly after this bout, the ladies of CCRGs became friends with my BFF and invited her to parties (in which I happily tagged along). There, I found that these ladies were sweet, charming and hardly in a million years would one ever suspect any of them to have the moxie to brazenly send an opponent to the hospital then become angry at the referee for sending them to the time-out box. In a nutshell, these girls lived up to - and yes, exceeded - my expectations of what a roller derby bout should be. Just because they are chicks doesn't mean that they are girlie. A hearty and unabashed 5 star standing ovation to the awesomeness that are the CCRG and a boo and a hiss to my BFF for being the first to discover yet another awesome thing that I have come to love and adore. I kid, I kid. No boos or hisses to her. She's seriously perfection and it's not her fault for being infinitely cooler then me. Plus I owe her big time for making my burlesque and pin-up dreams come true...but that's another review for another day... :)

We were able to easily purchase tickets for time elected online. I purchased the adult skate 7pm-11pm w skates. It totaled $33 after fees. The Baltimore Peninsula building was pretty inviting. The kind Security Guard helped us w the parking specs. FYI: You have to pay $17 to park on the parking lot or on the street for $7. The parking fees were kind of disheartening. The skating venue itself was very nice. Once you get off the elevator, you walk into large inviting space. Everyone we had an encounter with was nice and helpful. There was a beverage set up in there as well as a bunch of tables. A bottled water was $4. That was a nuisance. The DJ was doing his thing. Great tunes to appeal to any music listener. Sadly, the evening ended w my ggggf falling and breaking her ankle, but that was no fault of the establishment. The employees were very helpful tending to her, checking up on her, and providing her w things of comfort (physical assistance, ice, water). I would return again if given the opportunity, and I encourage those who can visit to visit and support this pop-up. You won't be disappointed.

I purchased my ticket on online and decided I would bring my adult daughter's skates instead of paying the $5 skate rental fee. The total cost for skating was around $25 including fees. When I arrived I was surprised to pay for parking in the lot across the street when there was no ticket system or gate however, street parking was a little cheaper. The skate location is located on the 2nd floor and of course there is a waiver to be signed upon entering. They have lockers and coat check for I believe $10 extra but, definitely pack lite if possible. The have a small bar in the back for drinks and several couches and chairs for seating. The DJ was on point as I have not been skating in years. We were all having fun as the night was coming to a close. I requested a song from the DJ and as soon as I heard the song I my skates caught on to one another which ultimately resulted in the fracture of my ankle. I was in excruciating pain and staff carrying me to couch and provided me with an ice bag and water until I was able to get further medical attention. All in All~ it was a fun experience until the end. Needless to say I have retired from skating and will not be back.

You MUST now reserve your ticket to skate as well as the type of ice skate that you need. For an Adult, it was $10 to enter and $5 for beginner ice skates , total of $15 (no taxes). Reservation times are every 15 minutes and you should arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled time to allow for COVID-19 social distancing practices. You must also wear a mask. By Friday we noticed that it was supposed to rain heavily during our scheduled time. I called the business number at 1030A and left a voicemail inquiring about skating in the rain and refund of tickets. I received a call back around 1230p that day (the business opens at 12p) and was told that the ice skating rink does Not close during raining periods because the ice is frozen. If the rain fall is too heavy for skaters to skate safely then they will stop, but that typically has not occurred. My friend and I decided to not skate due to the rain and I was offered a quick and easy refund. Over the phone, I received a text message confirmation that we cancelled our order and I would be refunded. I got the refund back in a few business days (and over a holiday). The business person was really nice and patient to answer my questions and provide a refund. Hopefully one day I will actually make it to skate at this ice skating rink!

That does not mean unmaintained, quite the opposite. The established looks very clean, and preserved: clean and well repaired. "Preserved", that's the word I would use. And for a child of the 70s and 80s, I could see myself having a Stranger Things party here with the setting already thrown in. We came here for my goddaughter's 7th birthday party. The party was around 30 kids. No problems were had regarding reservations or accommodations. The kids had a blast. The music was pretty loud, on top of a bunch of very vocal 5 to 8 years olds. They even had someone scouting the entrance to facilitate the admission of party guests.

The place is pretty easy to find though it is unlikely you'd just happen to drive by it, as it is kind of not on the beaten path. You can purchase everything ahead of time in terms of skate rentals and entry. It's pretty reasonable for one session mid-afternoon until close in the evening, you just need one entrance ticket/fee paid. You get your money's worth for sure if you are there for hours! You can bring your own skates or rent skates here- they have regular roller skates and roller blades. Both of these are in whole sizes, no half sizes, and both of them would be best on your feet with high socks that go to your lower calves, at least. Tying them tightly gives you the best skating, but that also pinches into skin if you don't have the right socks. They have an area for parties that includes a few arcade games, but mostly, you're there to skate. There are people there who are serious skaters going wicked fast and throwing some cool tricks, but we never felt bad in any way for not being one of the super talented skaters. There's a snack bar, too, with your classic fare like burgers, hot dogs, nachos, fries and funnel cake fries. Yummy snack junk food that makes the experience all the more reminiscent of young carefree days! They have lockers for your stuff, some don't even lock, but no one seemed concerned. There are benches for sitting and changing out your shoes to skates and vice versa, and people tend to just stash their shoes under the benches rather than get a locker. A good time all around and pretty affordable if you're there for a while!

That's a great touch, as it got us through quickly without slowing down anyone who wasn't with a party. My son was given a voucher for skates and, after greeting the party guests, we headed over to get a pair. This was easy. He was in a pair of skates that fit in like two minutes. I planned on just sort of hanging with him but was informed outside shoes could not be on the skate floor. This was his first time so I sort of let him go and...it wasn't good. Thankfully there was a referee who helped him return to me. At this point I decided to get him a skate pal and rented my own pair of skates (both of which were super reasonable prices). The skating rink seemed to be in mostly good shape. There were a couple questionable spots. The rink has a DJ, snack bar and some games that people can play when not skating. The food was fine. The games were fine as well. Neither was spectacular. The host that was connected to our party was very attentive and accommodating. She explained everything that she was doing (almost too much). The one negative is the bathrooms. They are not very conducive to beginning skaters. Trying to keep my son from falling and conking his head on the toilet was a bit of a chore. Taking skates on and off is also a hassle and there isn't really anywhere to store them in or around the bathroom. I'm not sure what the solution is but, just know, bathroom going at the rink while wearing skates can be an adventure. Overall I thought Sportsman's Hall Roller Skating was a fine place to attend a kids birthday party.

No coin- operated lockers were there when I went to the rink in 2020. There was no designated waiting area besides the parking lot in 2020. No pro shop with a qualified, experienced figure skate technician in 2020. Hope the rink has those things it didn't have in 2020.
