Before the entry into the main German Town in Hahndorf sits a large Vegetable Market. I am a big…read moresupporter of purchasing my fruit and veg from local sources. At the Hahndorf Vegetable Garden they try their best to source all of their stock from local suppliers. This family business has grown over the years. They recently refurbished the store and made it a lot larger and offer many more products. It has almost turned into a small supermarket. They stock flours, pastas, sauces, rices, everything you need really. If you want to avoid the big supermarket chains, this is your one stop shop now. The only thing they don't stock is toilet paper, toothpaste, cleaning fluids and the like. All of the produce I have purchased from here have been fresh and have lasted a long time. I sometimes find when I purchase vegetables from the Supermarket they spoil fast. I would like to point out the best produce that I have found at this store is the fruit. In particular the stone fruit when it is in season. You can smell the fruit when you walk in the store. My father always taught me that if your fruit smells good, it will generally taste good. And so far that theory has proven to be correct. So if you are in the hills and need a fruit fix, check it out!

This is a great small business which is growing every time we go there. As a second destination…read morewhen the central markets are too much effort, Hahndorf Veggie Garden delivers fresh fruit, veggies and herbs, small-goods, meat, dairy, bread, coffee etc at good prices. Being in the hills, it's convenient for us and has all our favourite hills brands so we visit at least once every month or so; but we have friends who venture up from the burbs to get bulk veggies. They also sell lump charcoal, plants, and have a baked good section out the front. Worth a visit, and while you're up there, grab some local Adelaide Hills wine from one of the wineries nearby.

Aldi... is a weird store. If you haven't heard of the major supermarket chain, it is because it is…read morestill rather new in South Australia. They started rolling out the stores early 2016. But, Aldi was originally from Germany and now spans internationally. I have been meaning to check out the store for a long time. I have heard stories about what they sell in this store. What will you find here? Well.... "Simplee Noodles" which kinda look exactly like Maggi noodles. Then there is "Expressi Coffee Capsules" which kinda looks exactly like Nespresso Coffee Capsules. It's like they copy the exact packaging and then just change the name. Not sure how they get away with it with Intellectual Property and Copyrights. But, maybe there is some psychology behind it? Like, are we so used to buying these bigger "brands" we more inclined to buy them when we recognise the colour and shape of the branding? It's not all copies here though. They do stock real brands here too. I saw Nutella and Coke being sold here. The thing I think that makes Aldi successful is just the real cheap prices. As for quality? Well, I got some frozen potato wedges to give them a go. They are ok. Did not really taste different to major brands. But, the thing that makes me nervous is that I do not know where they were manufactured? The labels say that their head office is in NSW and doesn't really say where the product is being made. There is a whole fresh fruit & veg section. Some of the price tags say that the produce is from South Australia. But, then the label has the NSW sticker on it. I asked the staff about it and he said it is a generic label they use from head office. Should we trust what they put on the labels? I am a skeptic and don't trust corporate giants. So, I don't think I will be buying any other food from here. But I might buy plastic bags or cleaning products. Not sure? There is just too much ambiguity here and it makes me uneasy.

The interior is delightfully cosy, regardless of the weather outside. A trip to Hahndorf wouldn't be complete without a visit!

It's a very narrow road, made more narrow by the fact that cars are parked along it pretty much the whole way on both sides. So once I finally worked out where this place was, I was really very desperate for a milkshake and a break. OMFG. What a great place! The menu, while not huge, is packed full of extremely appetizing foods and drinks. The chocolate milkshake I had might well be the best I ever experience. It's hard to describe how good it is. I did get a couple of the handmade chocolates to try, and like the milkshake, they were delicious. Service here is excellent. Really friendly. The shop itself is a converted house, and it's beautiful. It really is. It's surprisingly large. If you look at it from the street, you'll have no idea how many people can fit into this palace of chocolatey pleasure. I'm another who would give this place ten stars. Or more.
