You have different sandwich options. And they provide constant quality-taste even the place is crowded. Classic sandwich is my favorite.

Soooo good! Love this place. My only complaint is that when you get it delivered the fries are usually cold.

Pre-seasoned lamb, chicken & beef available too. Interesting place. Never seen butchers cutting whole carcasses in front of me before. Was always hidden from view. Looks like it's also a school for butchers "to be". Young, Fun, Happy employees all cutting carcasses together... joking around.. poking fun at each other.. I like the environment. Will go back.

Nowadays these places (although some exist) have become more specialized and need to charge more money. This is due to the advent of mass grocery and Costco have taken over the lions share of the meat business. Offerings here are fresh cut (aged) meat. Loads of local bottled and canned products. A small selection of fresh dairy products and what I come for the cured saucisson. Last year I spent the month of June in France and developed a semi-addiction to cured saucisson. I'm not proud of it (hence my mom and doctor warn in moderation) but this is the best offering I have found in Quebec. Pork shop (available at your local IGA) does a fine version however it's just the bit more delicious here at Lawrence. Also purchased are bottles of St Leon maple syrup. $25 a big bottle is a bit steep but it makes a wonderful gift or delicious in the morning on your pancakes or toast. Being in the heart of the Plateau then can cater to those who are willing to pay a bit more. I believe the meat shop is connected to Lawrence restaurant a few doors down which does a dandy brunch.

Arguably, the most famous smoked meat spot in the city is Schwartz's - and indeed when we were walking past it there was a huge line of people waiting to get in. Smoked meat wasn't on the top of my list, as I could easily go to a Jewish Deli in NYC - but we were on a food tour and this was one of the stops. That being said, I was looking forward to checking out the meats. Lester's is located in Outremont, which is also the home to Montreal's Hasidic Jewish community. The place gave off old school vibes - walking in we were greeted by the deli counter with tables scattered throughout the dining room. The decor was charming and casual with touches of kitsch on the walls without being tacky. There is a good variety of classic deli dishes, though we went classic and got the smoked meat with rye, pickles, and mustard. There was enough for each of us to make one sandwich, so that's what we did. This was honestly better than I expected - the meat was juicy and tender, the bread was soft yet was able to withstand being part of a sandwich, and the pickles were super flavorful. Special shoutout to the mustard - we were told they make their own which I felt was a really special touch. Service was good, and overall this was an unexpected highlight of my food tour. Jewish deli food is not something I usually gravitate towards, but this was some of the best I've had - it's well worth making a trip here.

Great smoked meat sandwich!…read more Honestly my first thought was to compare this sandwich to the many pastrami sandwiches I've had in NYC but that would be comparing apples to oranges. Even Schwartz will tell you it's not the same product although it is very similar. Both institutions cure, spice, smoke and steam the meat but that's where the similarities end. Although I don't know for sure, I've heard the cut of meat is different. Katz uses a naval cut, which is noticeably fattier and juicy. Schwartz's smoked meat doesn't lack in fattiness but it's far less fatty and juicy. Another fact on the first bite is -the flavor. Katz's flavor profile on the pastrami is a knockout punch while Schwartz delivers a jab. Schwartz's smoked meat delivers a different flavor profile all together. That's not to say Schwartz isn't great because it's half the price on Katz essentially and you don't have to tip your slicer here. That's not to say Schwartz doesn't bring their own brand of chaos. On my way out the slicer shouted he'd serve no one until the line was straightened out to his liking. LOL. It's all good though, that line was a mess and Sometimes tourists need a stern talking to. I'd get in a straight line for sure for this sandwich! I got my sandwich from the takeout next door versus waiting for table service. The line was 20 deep at 3pm and I just didn't have the patience on a drizzling afternoon. I'd revisit for another one of these smoked meat sandwiches.

The service there was great, and it had that classic old-school deli atmosphere. I hadn't had a pastrami sandwich in a while, and while this one was very good, I wouldn't personally call it great. I found the meat a little dry, but adding coleslaw and a pickle definitely helped. I also tried their classic black cherry soda, which was excellent. If I'm comparing it to places like Langer's or Katz's, I'd probably rank Schwartz below both of them. I think Katz has better pastrami with more fat and a juicier texture overall, and Langer's #19 is still my favorite deli sandwich because you're getting more ingredients and flavors than just pastrami and mustard. Overall though, Schwartz is definitely worth checking out. You probably won't be blown away, but it's still a really solid experience with a lot of character.
