I have never had as many compliments on my hair in such a short span of time! I've had this hairdo…read morefor maybe 5 hours, half of which was spent vacuuming, and already 4 compliments! I'd always been curious about Oskar Pink. I take the Chalk Farm station sometimes, and this place is right across the street from it. The decor looked really cool: funky outlines of different hairdresser's tools painted all over the walls, a clock that was backwards (so when you looked at yourself in the mirror during your cut, it looked correct), etc. So today was a crummy, tiring day and I am meeting my boyfriend's family this weekend, so I thought I'd treat myself to a cut. And a treat it was! I was a walk in, which was no problem at all. I worked with Marzia, who was super friendly and if I was keeping my hair short I'd totally go for her do. I got a great cut. Who knew I looked so cute with bangs? She did a great job giving me a new look while keeping the length I so desperately wanted to maintain -- if you're a girl with superstraight hair that grows ever so slowly, you will know how important this is. And the price, while not cheap, was certainly cheaper than what you expected to pay in other such boutique salons. I've even paid more at Toni and Guy, which wasn't nearly as luxurious an experience. Now with salons, I'm incredibly judgmental, and Oskar Pink sold me on the details. The shampoo session was long and luxurious, no wash-and-go deal here. The place was well lit and well equipped, everything looked clean and professional grade. They totally did not force any products on me (double thumbs up!!) and that was nice. Marzia also did not try to hairdresser-chat me (triple thumbs up!!!). I hate that stuff! What do you do, do you have a boyfriend, where are your from, blah blah blah as if you or I really care, I just want to read my magazine in peace! She was professional through and through - all conversation was about my hair, and she was honest about her opinions while still respecting my tastes. Definitely give Oskar Pink a try. I am SO going back. (OK fine, one minus -- they don't have beauty treatments like waxing, nails, etc. But they do hair really well so it's ok, I forgive them.)

Maria - the lady that does my hair - is funny and charming. She has "ninja'd" my fringe, which is the first time in 5 years that post hairdressing appointment, that my fringe actually looks the way it is meant to. She is a perfectionist. Then blow me down with a feather at the cost of it! CHEAP AS CHIPS! For a wash cut and blow dry it was like £19, I had to ask twice if she had forgotten to ring up the correct price. Obviously, make sure you leave a well deserved tip. Maria also did some plaited creation with my hair for a work awards evening, it was stylish and got many a compliment from people at the awards evening. I have also noticed when I am in there other people's hair cuts - as you do - and they are spot on. The colourist managed to make the most dowdy lady look rather chic and classic class. There is another hairdresser that makes her customers look like a precision hair cut that you would expect on the front of a magazine. The atmosphere is non pretentious and is enjoyable and you can't help but smile at the banter that goes on. Definitely not the place where you walk out thinking that they are all talking about you as you forgot to wash your hair in the morning! For once I am actually regularly turning up every 6 weeks, my barnet looks great (even though I say so myself) and am chuffed I have found this little gem :)

After much research and thought, I chose Andrew Barton. I spoke with the team about what I was looking to do, and based on my style, etc, they paired me with Marlon. He kept me entertained (and calm) through the process. The entire staff was watching my transformation throughout the day. It had to be a present; this place really is so expensive I will never be able to go back on my own wallet. The look of the place is ultra swanky, all upstairs above the Duke Of York Square with lots of different rooms devoted to all the different niche areas of hair dressing. There seems to be just as many assistants as there are hairdressers and in addition there are people to bring you coffee, food, do your nails and generally smile encouragingly as your style takes shape. I liked the cut and with a colour it was completed in just under 3 hours which seems about average in this city. It's definitely one of the best hairdressing experiences on offer in the capital and I did feel like everything was 'being taken care of'. Without being totally sexiest, I would imagine that women, especially those with a bit of money and time, would really, really, enjoy this one.

Ever in search of a decent haircut, on a recommendation I tried this place, a boutique salon…read moresituated towards the end of Monmouth Street. Stuart Phillips himself is, according to their website and literature, a celebrity hairstylist at the centre of the hairdressing world, styling nominees for the BAFTAs as well as a star-studded client list, including (among many) the likes of Mr Big Chris Noth, Ronnie Wood and even The Hoff! Just to be clear, none of whom are my hair style icons! And when he's not teasing celebrity locks into camera readiness, we're told you're most likely to find him demonstrating his skills on morning TV or in the midst of an A-list party. Wow, fancy eh! For Stuart to get his hands on your barnet it'll set you back £200 (ladies) or £115 (for gents), for which he will apparently provide a complete lifestyle hair consultation to determine your perfect haircut. Given the price tag, it could be an expensive routine to get into, so you may want to save an appointment with Stuart for if you do actually get an invite to the BAFTAs. For my first visit I just had some highlights put in by one of their colour technicians, plus a blow-dry and fringe trim. Rest assured the prices for a regular stylist/ colourist are much less than a session with Stuart, and broadly comparable with most London salons pitching themselves at the same kind of level. My colourist seemed really pleasant and professional as did the other staff I came across and I'm completely happy with what she's done. She listened, assessed my hair, and made some suggestions, which is what you want. It also seemed to me that she worked very neatly and attentively. I'd feel comfortable trusting her enough to take a few more colour risks - well, within reason, I still have to go to work! The fringe trim was probably the most diligent fringe trim I've had anywhere, from one of the main stylists who stepped out from his current client for a short while to attend to my bangs so I could actually see where I was going again. The attention to detail for a mere fringe trim impressed me sufficiently to return for a full cut here and to see how they did with the rest of my hair, and I was really happy with the result. I think it's one of the best cuts I've had, and it's held its shape well as its grown out. One minor observation I have about the experience, which doesn't reflect negatively on the service or skills of the staff at all, is that I think the salon decor maybe looks a tiny bit tired. Obviously it's a subjective matter of personal taste, but I wasn't particularly keen on the heavy wavy frosted glass mirror surrounds. And when you're at the hairdressers you spend a lot of time looking at the mirrors. It does however make a good impression on entrance, and the Swarovski crystal light fittings and velvet covered waiting chairs convey a certain level of luxury, but for a premium salon, I don't feel the rest of the interior is quite up to the standard of plush or modern captured so well by The Chapel in Islington, or Ena a bit further up the road, which is what I'm comparing it to. So I would hope they perhaps consider a bit of an update in the not too distant future. It really wouldn't take much.
