The weather's been quite lovely lately, so I decided to visit Milton, a suburb that I typically don't really have any business in. My original intent was to grab coffee at Bunker, then head to Mrs. Luu's for lunch, but I was a bit crunched for time, so decided on just one place. I was banking on Mrs. Luu's having Vietnamese coffee - the one with the condensed milk - so I just went straight there... It was about noon when I arrived and was greeted by the friendly staff - and I only note this because 20 minutes later the crowds started piling in. The menu is simple, and I chose the Three Little Piggies Banh Mi (7), which has all the veggies with Vietnamese porschetta and ham, along with BBQ pork. The baguette was fresh and crunchy, and probably one of the best breads I've had in terms of a baguette! It wasn't hard to bite into, though it was a bit messy. The meat was pretty good, although my mistake was ordering something with processed meats, which I'm not a big fan of. I think I'll go with the chicken filet next time - and there will definitely be a next time! I also had the Vietnamese coffee (4), which was actually just alright. It wasn't mind-blowingly amazing, but tasted the way it should have. I think the problem was that there wasn't enough ice, which seems to happen in Brisbane a lot, and it just wasn't as refreshing as it could've been! Either way, this is definitely a place I would return to, as it's located just outside of the train station and is a comfortable (air conditioned!) place to enjoy a delicious, casual meal. read more

Banh Mi! My husband and I ordered a banh mi each - one Pork Chop and one 3 Little Piggies (with porchetta, Vietnamese ham and BBQ pork). Our favourite was the 3 Little Piggies but both were delicious with a beautiful crunchy baguette, tasty mayonnaise, generous serving of protein, salad, and hot chilli (optional). The banh mi are fresh, full of flavour and at $8.50 very good value for money. read more

We recently tried this place for the first time as our regular Vietnamese haunts were closed for the Christmas holidays. Upon arrival, and seeing the phrase "Vietnamese Canteen" on the building, we quickly realised this place caters to the fast food crowd, and it does with a steady stream of customers coming in and going out with their orders. We were hungry for a Combination Vietnamese Noodle Salad so ordered two at $15.50 each. They were out in a matter of minutes, a small portion of vermicelli noodles at the bottom, hidden by a heap of chicken pieces, sliced savoury meatballs and spring rolls on a bed of salad - and all in a small plastic bowl with lid, even though we were eating there. Compared to the salads we usually get at Ca Phe Nam, Trang and Quan Thanh, it was an utter disappointment, and only a few dollars cheaper. The ratio of noodles to protein was so far off, one has to ask why when they must be the cheapest ingredient in the salad. We would have preferred more noodles and less protein, and the salad dressing was tasteless and served in a small plastic bottle; it wasn't enough to completely season the salad so my wife went back for another - and thankfully wasn't charged. Overall, not the best vermicelli salad experience so won't be back for that again. Although the Banh Mi's seemed very popular. In short, fix the ratio of noodles to protein, improve the flavour of the salad dressing and cut down on the use of plastic. Then you might be on to something. read more

Owned by the brains behind Trang's in West End it was always going to be that Mrs Luu's offered fast, fresh and delicious Vietnamese. Taking a location on Railway Terrace in Milton sees them tucked away from most of the activity along Park Road, but from reports of lines out the door this week, I don't think it is doing them any harm. From Milton Train station turn left (as if you were walking to Bunker) and keep your eyes peeled for the beautiful pink signage. I like to think their location makes it perfect to pair your lunch with a Bunker coffee (or hot chocolate). I'm yet to try their Banh Mi (I hear it's exceptional) and when I stopped by I tried their King Prawn and Pork Goi Cuon (rice paper roll) along with the Soy Glazed Chicken Goi Cuon. The chicken was my favourite - the flavours were just perfect without being too overpowering. For a great take-away option for hungry office workers this is a fantastic choice. For me, it marks the half-way point of a ride and I'll be marking it with Mrs Luu's and a Bunker coffee. read more

This place has been on my list of places to go for lunch for awhile. I am happy that I went but I don't think that I will be running back. The location is very convenient right next to the Milton train station. Just hop off and you'll be welcomed by a slew of coffee shops and restaurants. We walked in and there was a mix of people waiting for their orders and others dining in. We walked right up to the counter and ordered the pork chop banh mi and the three little piggies. They already have the banh mi pre-made and put them back in the kitchen for toasting (BIG PLUS). I know that this is to expedite the process but half the fun of ordering a baguette is to watch them put it together in front of you and the ability to personalize your own baguette. Some people like more pickled carrots and daikon (like me) while others prefer just a little bit. Some don't like cilantro or cucumber while I want mine loaded. They do ask if you want chili to which I said "YES!" but it didn't have enough kick for me. The pork chop was better than the three little piggies by far. The Vietnamese ham and proschetta fell flat. I think it was partly because it was so thinly sliced. The BBQ pork was not tasty in the slightly either. So I wasn't overly disappointed but I was hoping for a little more flavor here at Mrs. Luu's. Overall: 3.67 Service: 4 (fast and courteous) Food: 3 (it had the crisp on the outside but needed more flavors from the inside) Atmosphere: 4 (cute and open seating for a small crowd but definitely set up for grab and go) P.S. Friendly little place in Milton near the ferry terminal. We went in for lunch to get a banh mi as I had been craving them. I had the 3 little piggies for $8. This is quite a bit but they are large and enough for lunch easily. Meat was a mixture of hot and cold which I found odd, I'd rather one or the other, bus tasty enough. Doesn't beat the banh mi in Chinese districts I've had elsewhere but nice enough to satisfy the craving. read more

I love Vietnamese food but unless I'm in Darra/Inala, there aren't any good options on the inner Westside. But the people behind Milton eatery Mrs Luu's have saved the Westsiders by opening and serving up good, cheap, authentic Vietnamese fare. Only downside is that they're only open on weekdays, which is disappointing for us city workers! Although I have been known to make the train trip for a longish lunch... Mrs Luu's offer a selection of Bahn Mi (the greatest kind of salad roll), Vermicelli noodle salads, rice paper rolls and rice dishes. There are also cabinet salads, dumplings and while there are no standard menu noodle soups, there were a few available on the specials board when I was there for lunch on a rare weekday at home. I chose to try a selection of the pre-made rice paper rolls and decided on the BBQ Pork & Prawn and the Grilled Chicken, $6 each. Both serves came with two fat rolls with plenty of vermicelli noodles, lettuce, carrot, cucumber and mint along with the described filling. A little bottle of hoisin sauce also came in the box. I also ordered a Vietnamese iced coffee ($4) which is a blend of special Vietnamese filter coffee with condensed milk and plenty of ice. The rolls were tasty with the BBQ Pork and Prawn being my favourite. There wasn't a huge amount of the meat filling in either roll type but it wasn't stingy. They were all fresh tasting and very filling - I really only needed 2-3 to fill me up. The iced coffee was good and strong but nothing out of this world. My eating partner got the grilled pork chop Bahn Mi ($7), which was made fresh and only took about 5 minutes. The baguette roll came out warm and crunchy and was stuffed with salad and meat. He's notorious for being fussy and having at least one complaint about his food so when he said he liked it, I knew it must be good! Although he did fit in a complaint that he couldn't find any daikon as was in the description. Overall, great place to go and I'm jealous of all of the Milton workers for whom it's a local! Of course I can't really complain given the number of options in the CBD... ;) read more

Mrs Luu's Vietnamese Canteen is the latest addition to Railway Terrace. With Bunker Coffee just a few doors down, and the Scratch bar at the end of the street, it's rapidly becoming a great spot for good food and drink. The decor is bright, clean, and cheery, matching the friendly staff and fresh food. Standards like banh mi and rice paper rolls are delicious and fresh. The 'three little pigs' pork banh mi is one of the best $7 meals I've ever eaten. Each of the dishes has a variety of options; the lemongrass pork, glazed chicken, or caramelised onion omelette are particularly delicious. 5 stars for the 3 little piggies Banh Mi and Vietnamese Ice coffee. The Banh Mi is well balanced, delicious, fresh and filling. The coffee is so refreshing and tasty and miraculously it doesn't mess with me (like some do). I love a variety of Vietnamese dishes but for some reason I have not been able to try anything else on the menu as I drive to Milton specifically for this meal. I would love this to be my local lunch spot. Get there early otherwise the Banh Mi will sell out. read more

Convenient? Yes. Affordable? Yes. Fast service? Yes. Locating near Milton train station, many far and near customers rushed in for lunch meals. There are many seatings but take-aways are great options for many office workers. The menu does not offer many dishes- the Vietnamese buns, rice dishes and noodle salad dishes. Terry and I were on a search quest for our same indulging passion towards Vietnamese buns. We ordered the three little pigs and BBQ pork buns. It was filling and flavoursome but authenticity is not hitting the notch yet! (Well, I have high expectations when it comes to Asian food!) But again, if I was to offer you a choice, please go for that BBQ pork bun as it is aromatically char-grilled and well-seasoned. Mrs Luu's serves very nice coconut juice. The staff are beautiful people. Very hard to find a park at lunch-time but if you work in the area it's easy. The restaurant is clean, fresh, elevated & air-conditioned. It is air-conditioned inside plus there's an outdoor deck as well. Because of the open windows and open plan it feels very spacious and not at all cramped. There are tables & stools to sit at which are quite comfortable for a quick & cheap meal. I love a good Banh Mi. You can't go past Saigon Grill's pork belly creation, but I don't live in the city. Mrs Luus was packed when I took my 2yr old to grab a couple of Banh Mi's to take home. Chicken and the Beef did not disappoint, but I still have my favourite in the city. read more

Let's just say I will definitely be back. Had the Three Little Piggies Bahn Mi and an Iced Coffee. The bahn mi, the best I have had in Brisbane to date. Lots of meat, fresh veggies, a crunchy roll and chillies upon request. The coffee was good, but for $4 there was too much ice. Looking at all the other meals everything looks very good, and it is truly very quick service. read more

The 3 Little Piggies Banh Mi was so fresh and so incredibly delicious, I actually felt a bit emotional, like when you hear a stirring symphony and are swept away by the excellence of the moment. This place is unbelievable and there is often a big queue which the efficient staff manage very quickly and politely. What can I say? Value for money, excellent service and unbelievably good fresh food. I'm just glad I work nearby, because I'm addicted to Mrs Luu's. read more
