This is the second time we've ordered delivery from Mr. Shu. As far as Chinese food goes, it's not bad, just a little different than what we're used to. This time around, we ordered a quart of Wonton soup which was pretty good. The wontons themselves were delicious. The broth seemed very pepper forward which isn't a bad thing, but is unusual for us. The General Tso's chicken was standard and the pork lo mein wasn't bad. We ordered via Postmates and requested utensils but we only got 1 spoon and 1 fork (but enough food for 3-4 people). read more

AWESOME food (especially the pork mei fun), awesome service, polite waiters, and overall just a great place for chinese food

This restaurant has very friendly people and excellent authentic food from Fujian. My favorite dishes are the kung pao tofu, hot and sour soup, edamame, and steamed vegetable dumplings. They also have real Chinese hot tea and will adjust the spice to whatever you prefer. I have been going here since they first opened. read more

Ordered 3 times already and love! Go for boxes that include your basic faves with gyoza or shumai, spring roll, rice, sushi, and salad (just shredded lettuce tho.) Already tried sweet n sour chix, chix teriyaki, general tso, and beef. Beef dishes aren't poor quality chewy meat either! Looking forward to trying more! read more

Food is delicious! Egg rolls are nice and crispy on the outside and soft and flavourful on the inside, and gyoza are really good! Sesame chicken and General Tso's chicken are amazing--chicken is juicy and sauced with the perfect amount of sauce, not too much and not too little. The sushi is really great, very flavourful with some really cool special rolls--big fan of the Kearny Roll with the tempura salmon, delicious! read more

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone - especially their lunch specials. Well priced and you get so much food! They even threw in a super cute 2022 calendar on a scroll with my order. It's hanging up in my room now! The food was really great, they had an option for white meat sesame chicken on the lunch special menu so I got that. The rice was nice and sticky and fresh. Loved the spicy girl roll and threw in an extra spicy Mayo on the side like I asked. Spicy Mayo is the key to my heart. Overall 5/5 on service & food - thanks Mr Shu :) read more

I hate updating a review to lesser stars but I didn't have the best experience from Mr Shu's last night. Trying to satisfy my craving for Chinese food, I remembered eating here and it being great. This time, not so much. I got two sushi rolls which were pretty standard - no complaints here. I also ordered a green salad with ginger dressing. The salad was inedible- went straight to the garbage. Every leaf was rotten, if I could fish out one spinach leaf without it being wilted that would be considered successful. The ginger dressing was also off, way too much citrus. The Chinese food was very ehh too. The chicken with mixed vegetables was terrible. The chicken itself was so so so chewy. Not very good at all. The sweet and sour chicken was alright. We also got a wonton soup which wasn't good either. I don't know if this place changed ownership but they've definitely changed flavor and quality from the last time I ate here. read more

1st time trying this place as we were in the mood for something spicy and sushi. We got the szechewan chicken thinking it would hit our spicy need. It comes with some veggies and rice. The portion size was adequate and everything was cooked well. We also got the ACC sushi. It comes with the typical soy sauce and Wasabi. It was rolled well and tasted good. The best was the sweet potato roll. It was fried and topped with some sweet sauce. One of them was rolled with a hair inside. If not for the hair, i would have given it a 4 star review. The price is competitive. read more

We ordered 2 sushi Deluxe dinners which totaled over $60. This is how the tuna and tuna rolls looked. Not eating brown tuna! When I called they said they would replace it. Never did. Called again and they said sorry the fresh tuna is coming in tomorrow! No thank you! Never again! read more

Szechuan Style Tofu was very good. Loved the taste of sauce. It was not that much oily. Usually I always see Oily gravy in chinese restaurants. But Pad Thai was not good. I didnt like the taste. It was very dry and sweet. I don't know what exactly it was but felt like there was sand in it. read more

We ordered Mr Shu via DoorDash. It was not a great experience as our order was delivered without all the sides we thought we had ordered. Via doordash we ordered Chicken teriyaki and Beef teriyaki. Both orders were supposed to be bento box style with mini spring roll, 4 piece spicy crab roll, gyoza, and salad. Also, I got the shrimp and avocado roll and he got the sweet potato roll. As I pull our food out of the bag, I realized we did not get any of the sides that was supposed to accompanied our teriyaki. I thought maybe the delivery person had forgot it. We called the restaurant and the owner apologized and said that when they got the order, he wasn't sure if it was just the teriyaki entree or the bento box. He had tried the number that was provided via doordash but it had turned out to the delivery person phone number and they did not picked up. So he decided to make an executive decision and gave us the entree. I can't fault him for that. The sushi was actually great and the pricing was very affordable! That I would recommend. The teriyaki was disappointing in that we didn't get all the good stuff from the bento box style like we thought. Putting that aside....both teriyaki were disappointing. The chicken and beef were both flavorless. Taste like boiled chicken drenched in teriyaki sauce!! We didn't even finish it. But I do want to give this place another try and hopefully we will get what we ordered next time. We did complained to doordash and they gave us some credit. read more

Food was amazing! Got eel and dragon roll along with miso soup and was very happy. Service was quick and great too!

Their sushi is good, but the bento box is a lil lack luster. Make sure u ask for utensils and napkins otherwise you won't receive any.

I have been going to Mr. Shu since the first day I moved to Kearny. My first meal was here before I purchased groceries. They changed ownership many years ago and the current family is serious about providing a consistently high level of quality. Many people do takeout but I usually prefer to eat in the restaurant which has several spacious tables. My favorite dishes are kung pao tofu, edamame, hot and sour soup, and steamed vegetarian dumplings. The scallion pancakes are also tasty. Be sure to ask for hot tea--sometimes they have flavors which aren't listed on the menu. This place is a true family restaurant and I plan to keep returning often. read more

I'm really disappointed they were 30 mins late on my lunch order I'm never ordering here again the woman was rude and she was yelling at me because I cancelled but by law if their not by the house within 15 minutes prior you are allowed to cancel! They lost a costumer the woman was so rude this place should be shut down they don't know anything about customer service. RUDE read more

This is by far my favorite sauna in the North Arlington area. You'll really sweat the pounds off as you sit in the 100 degree heat... Oh wait, this is a sushi restaurant? My bad, I couldn't tell because of how hot it was inside. The waitress claimed they had AC and suggested we move to the sushi bar where it would be cooler, but it was just as hot. (The sushi chef turned on a fan which just blew hot air at us) The only other patron, a girl waiting for her take out, was attempting to prevent from passing out from the heat by holding a cold soda can against her forehead. We thought about ordering food to go and taking it back to work since it was unbearable for sit-down service inside Mr. Shu, but then we realized we wanted raw fish, not cooked fish. I'll attempt coming back here in the winter because all of the other reviews were pretty stellar and I still haven't found any great sushi in this area. read more

They go above and beyond. My delivery was late and they added on free edamame !!! And they gave us a calendar! It's amazing! We liked this restaurant a lot but now we really love them because they care about customer first. Their spicy girl roll and we replaced the tuna with spicy salmon and it's delicious! We get their crab rangoons and it's always top notch! We like their seaweed salad as well it's very fresh! Thank you so much for always being so accommodating ! read more

Stopped in here for a quick to go lunch with a few pieces of maki and nigiri nicely rolled, presented, and very fresh tasting. Their rice was especially good with just the correct balance of sweetness and sourness from rice vinegar. Fast, kind service rounded out this quickie. read more

Mr Shu - Simply...a clean dining room. - Sushi Bars Near Me - North Arlington, New Jersey

Food was good and ready sooner then expected. One of the better places for sushi in the area.

Terrific tasting, authentic Chinese food for a small restaurant. We also got great service from our waitress and the food came in generous portion sizes. I recommend the Sesame Chicken / General Tso's chicken dishes, because it tasted excellent, was crunchy and was made with real chicken inside the dough. I had delivery from Mr. Shu before: it was on-time, the food was fresh & hot and extra items were added to my order free of charge. Moreover, the haters are also losing this rating battle by a country mile, with 11 positive reviews over 4... Bon appetit! read more

Wow what a hidden gem this place is! Had the miso soup, vegetable spring rolls, and sushi. Yeah, it was freezing inside to dine in, BUT the food is totally worth it. Couldn't have been happier with the sushi. Only 4 stars because the miso soup was so-so. Plus there was no tofu in the miso soup. But still great prices and delicious sushi. I will go there again! read more

I LOVE this place and am upset I never visited sooner!! It's right on the corner of the bell pike and Ridge Rd. Easy to walk to if you're local. Usually quiet so it might be more popular as a take out place, but they'll have some soothing music playing which is nice. Service is quick and friendly, and the sushi is so fresh!! This place really impressed me as I felt I was settling in regards to the quality of other places. They have a great lunch special which my boyfriend and I always get. Lots of options for kitchen/hot food as well. I have some pictures of the various rolls we've tried, some appetizers and soups and the sesame chicken my boyfriend has ordered. I think my least favorite was the edamame, it felt tougher so maybe under cooked? Not super salty either so a little bland. But we loved everything else so far! read more

Love the freshness of the food. Has great taste. I've been ordering for the past 6-7 months and they have put less meat (chicken, shrimp, beef) in my orders. Would love to see it go back to having the right amount of meat again because it is my second best delivery restaurant in town. read more

Excellent specialty rolls, fast delivery, always satisfied! I highly suggest their Belleville TPKE roll and Spicy girl roll

When you order from and all-in-one style restaurant, have low expectations. Over the years, this place went from good to below average. The portions are small for the price, the sushi tastes off and the last time I ordered, the fish was still frozen, not sure how they missed that when they sliced the roll. Will not be reordering read more

If you're looking for a local sushi restaurant where you'll feel at home and taste some interesting creations, Mr. Shu should be high on your list of places to try. It's a very small restaurant and the decor is severely lacking. It operated for years as a chinese fast food take out business so there are only about 5 tables and little to no decor minus a few cool asian knick-knacks on the counter. But if you can get passed this you'll definitely enjoy your time here. The restaurants two strongest suits are it's service and it's artistic creations. I get the impression it's family owned and operated, and the family goes out of its way to welcome you to their establishment and make you feel comfortable. They truly want you to enjoy your meal and are willing to answer any questions about the food. If you can understand them through their accents you can learn a lot about the food you're eating. Upon my second visit I was even given a complimentary plate of white fish stuffed with jalepeno and cream chese, dressed with spicy mayo over sweet cucumbers and kabyaski sauce. It was an excellent unexpected surprise. On top of the welcoming personalized service you'll receive, you can also partake of some very special creations by their sushi chef. Their specialty roll selection isn't large (a selection of about 8 different rolls) but it makes up for it with creativity and artistry. For example, the spicy girl comes wrapped in pink soy with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and avacoda surrounding a large beautiful star pattern of 6 different sauces that magically don't bleed together. Mr. Shu also offers a selection of japanese and chinese entree's outside of sushi which I have yet to try because the sushi has been so good. If it holds itself to the same standards as the sushi, I'd imagine it won't disappoint. Overall this restaurant will surprise you with its warmth and artistry. It's a shame the decor is so bare and uninviting because I'm sure it will deter some people from tasting an excellent meal. But if you can deal with it's tiny size and lack of visual frills you won't be disappointed here. read more

i'll keep it short and sweet (?). Spare ribs are way oversauced and become too sweet. The overall freshness of the food is also questionable. I'll just say this was probably my first and last time ordering. There are many way better places in the area. read more

This place is amazing! Fresh, fast, and decently priced. I wish they had more veggie rolls but their vegetable dragon roll is my favorite. This was some of the worst food I have ever had. First, my fiancée ordered the Chicken Hibachi Meal. They gave us Chicken Teriyaki (it was one thin solid piece of chicken with teriyaki sauce on it). I called, and they said that chicken hibachi and chicken teriyaki are "the same thing." The chicken was extremely dry and flavorless. I ordered sushi, which I do not recommend. The fish tasted like it was left out, and rolls were clumped together in the container. Finally, we both shared gyoza. The gyoza tastes like it was reheated from a freezer, and had an awful aftertaste. I do not recommend this place for any Japanese. They have no knowledge of Japanese cuisine, and the quality of food was well below the price we paid for the food. read more

In you're in Kearny, North Arlington, Belleville or Lyndhurst and need a quick fix of sushi, Johnny, the sushi chef at Mr Shu will become your new friend. He's very inventive and brings wonderful flavors to your order. Best to just tell him to feed you like a sea otter and short of flinging the tasty little critters into your mouth, he'll just plop them down in front of you. Best of all, because Mr Shu serves Japanese, Thai and Chinese specialties, you could do a surf and turf, kinda, with some shrimp pad thai a crisp eggroll and fried dumplings. Three yums. read more

I was not impressed with Mr Shu's service and food. We've ordered twice from them and the amount of time you have to wait to receive your order is beyond excessive. The sushi itself is tiny, I've never seen smaller portions. One time we ordered and they didn't even include soy sauce for our sushi... to me this is unheard of.
