My kinda dive. Beer is usually the safest bet at a dive bar but Mr Bing's actually does cocktails well, too. Original recipes with unique names and a warm, quaint atmosphere is a win from me. It's on the small side but there's a number of seating options and in my experience, a very comfortable amount of standing room. There's a server named Michelle and when I tell you she is horrible...it's serious. My group went in the establishment happy and energized just to feel drained. She is rude and continuously had attitude and could not deliver standard beverages. She failed to succeed in completing a sugared rim for our drinks. I had a long ago shitty experience when this place had a different layout and some horrible bartenders. I decided to check it out again and found that things have improved. Turns out it's a whole new layout and decent, cozy place to grab a drink when wandering the outskirts of Chinatown. They had a couple drink specials and I went with the Bada Bing, which was basically a Moscow Mule in everything but name, including being served in the signature metal cup. I give them zero points for creativity on that one, but at least the cocktail was tasty. The bartender was all business and didn't seem to share our groups humor. We grabbed a seat against the back wall and ended up enjoying the chill atmosphere. Most of the other patrons sat hunched over the bar. They could have used some bar games, maybe a dart board. I normally don't like writing bad reviews but here it goes. It's my younger sister's 21st birthday and it's Sunday so not much to do and we came across this place. The service was terrible. Our server (blonde older lady) came to us and was instantly rude. Mind you, I'm with 3 other people and she just walks away right after I ordered my drink without saying anything. She comes back, still being rude and my sister asks for the same thing but with a different soda on the side and she made fun of the fact my sister was just turning 21 and called us all babies lol As we are walking away she's still making comments yelling rude remarks (so unprofessional) We were ready to spend some money there and we tip pretty well since we all work in customer service. But since she decided to profile us on our age so we decided F that, you aren't getting our money. Very weird experience! read more

Mr. Bing's is a cornerstone North Beach dive bar. In 2016 it was heavily renovated, so if you haven't visited since, I highly recommend stopping by. The space is much more open because the triangle-shaped bar in the center of the space has been smartly removed. Also, the floors are no longer falling apart and the bathrooms are now wheelchair-accessible. On my most recent visit, I met a chatty gentleman there who was clearly a regular. He said he had been coming to Mr. Bing's for nearly 3 decades, and was unhappy with updates. Guess you can't please them all. Despite the renovation, the bar still has its old homey feel. The interior lights remain dim, the drinks are still strong, and the historic bar still has its old-world charm. read more

North Beach in particular. All my milestone reviews (50, 100, 150) have come from me visiting "SF" spots. Now my review for Mr Bings gets to sit at "200" I've heard so much about this "North Beach" legendary dive bar. Word on the street (and the sign in the window) states this bar went through an ownership change. But the new owners want to still live up to the classic "Mr Bings" when they move their establishment in. But in the meantime it's still "Mr Bings" was it worth the hype? Well let's find out.. August 24, 2016 Wednesday - One man (me) looking to catch a happy hour and go somewhere I never been before. Atmosphere - 2/5 Service - 3/5 Cleanliness - 3/5 Background - Mr Bings has been around for sometime. Some say "It's a right of passage" so it's only fitting that I set foot in there. Considering SF is like my second home to an extant. Atmosphere - Mr Bings is old, and you can see it..smell it..and feel it as you walk through the small nook if you wanna call it that, of a bar/dive. Stool seating is what is offered here. Although on the other side of the bar has beer boxes and such piled up taking away seating space. Drinks - I had two Coronas @ $4.50 a piece. That's a pretty decent price, still "somewhat" competitive. Service - The lady that tended bar this day was polite and soft spoken. I don't know if that's a good formula for a bartender in the Bay Area, especially in "North Beach" she kinda went and sat away from the patrons. She came and tended us if we called her over, but the non interaction was kinda off putting. But at least the Coronas were cold and delicious. Overall - Mr Bings may not be for everyone, but this place still has character. It really is a bar I'm sure every Bay Area bar hopper have a story to tell about their time here, young or old. I wouldn't say it left an huge impression on me.."But" I did cross this off my "North Beach" list of must visit places. Future - Sure, I will visit again but the places where my "crowns" wait for me take first priority. read more

Came here with Choon Y and a few other friends for happy hours yesterday.........Yes.............I know.....how can you spend Thanksgiving at a dive bar? My intent was to meet up with Choon Y for a drink and to wish scooter, the bartender. a happy thanksgiving. I felt sorry for the poor lad for having to work. At the end of the drinking session, I was the poor lad that I should have felt sorry for. The drinks are pretty stiff here and the game of choice is liars dice. Liars dice and alcohol = no thanksgiving dinner and asleep by 7 pm. Had a great time though. I woke up today at 11:30am the next afternoon so I slept for 16 hours. Terrible!!! Way, way, WAY before Anthony Bourdain showed up. Location? Pretty Stellar. It's on Columbus Avenue, on a corner that merges FiDi, Chinatown, & NB. Service? Always neighborly. Gritty, divey, grimy, seedy, & dark. The perfect setting for a Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler novel scene. Or a Chinese underground piece. And anything film noir. ESPECIALLY when it was okay to smoke inside. A friend of mine used to bartend here. He loved it. No pretenses. No hipster. A thoroughly man's man kind of joint. The drinks are notoriously strong. Disclaimer: This was my first time visiting so didn't know Mr. Bing's before the remodel. With that out of the way, I am a big fan. While listed on the list of "Best Dive Bars", I wouldn't necessarily call it a dive. Just a good neighborhood bar with dark wood and dim lights. Their beer and liquor selection was on point and the Irish bartender was both warm and welcoming. There aren't any things to nosh on. There aren't any hotties waiting to get picked up. It is simply the dive-ist of bars San Francisco has to offer. Order your favorite spirit and open yourself up to talking to locals. From the local who refuses to move because he got his rent fixed back in 2011 to the flamboyant group that just got in from Castro, everyone was friendly, talkative and willing to buy the tourists a shot. It's the only place that the person behind the counter handed me a sharpie and nodded towards the bathroom, softly saying "go", welcoming the signature of a Houstonian. Comstock Saloon and Mr. Bing's have a thing going on between them- stay long enough and you will get to laugh along with all the locals while shots and beers are walked back and forth across the street. Upon ordering my drink, she asked if I was old enough to do so. I am 24 years old and presented my license to the bouncer on arrival. I was offended and I will not be returning. Mister Bing's was yet another stop during the SF Yelp pubcrawl yet I'm torn on what I think about this place. The bar is located on a corner and therefore shaped like a V inside. They don't have any beers on tap so your choices here consist of mixed drinks, bottled beer or wine. When we rolled into this place we packed it in and it became difficult to navigate through the place. I did play Golden Tee for the first time ever against Dfens T. and I WON!!!! Beginner's luck I guess! Then all of a sudden an overpowering putrid stench of sewage emerged and I had to make my way towards the door to get some fresh air. Another issue with this bar was the scandal over how the false advertisement led Omid to believe he would be getting much more crack than he did..... but that's a whole different story! read more

My favorite bar in North Beach, hands down. The place is small, but it luckily never gets too packed in here. Perfect place to grab a drink with friends or make some new ones. I want to say there's around 7 beers on tap, but I order a mixed drink here so can't comment further on the beer situation. All the bartenders are super friendly- shout out to Nicole for going out of her way to return a wallet to a customer who walked out of the bar without it. There are dive bars, and there are AWESOME dive bars. Bings falls in to the second category. We stumbled in to this place 20+ years ago on a boys football trip and we were impressed with the cash only, great selection, low prices of the cocktails in a town with so many trendy bars. We were drinking Jaeger shots that were easily three gulpers that about broke your neck from the shock. All for about $5 a shot. Well, I just happened to stumble on Bings again this week and how could I not stop in??? I am glad to report that nothing has changed and the dive factor that makes this place cool is still in full effect. The sticker cover condom machine in the bathroom gives this place a sixth star all by itself. A couple of things to know about Bings. Don't bring a posse. The place holds maybe 30 people if you sit on each others' shoulders. It's small, for locals, and they give zero shits why you are in town or who you know. Potty before you come. The bathrooms here border on third world and you only want to use them in case of emergency. Boys have it easier than girls in this place as we have proper equipment for not touching anything. Last, just have fun. Lose the ego, the uppitiness, the swagger; Bings is all about drinking big shots or beers with a few people on your way through life. read more

Love Mr. beans unfortunately tonight I had a less than great experience unfortunately I was greeted with a extremely aggressive and sort of round latin bouncer. We arrived 45 minutes before closing and he said he wasn't letting in any more guests. There was multiple people trying to get in. He would not let in anyone because of these closing soon. If your Google hours say 2 am you should take in people at least until 1:45 in my opinion. Avoid the establishment or be prepared for their security to raise their voice at your group. :( read more

While in San Francisco for work, I stumbled into this bar late one night...on Halloween. It was the only bar on Columbus that had room for me. I ended up spending the enitire week perched on a stool there, at times the only one in the bar. Last night while watching Anthony Bourdain's The Layover on Travel Channel, he too spent the entire evening there and stumbled out stinking wasted. Mr. Bing, Mr. Bing! Our first stop, when we got to San Francisco on a Friday night. It was our first destination to pregame and then head out to other bars in Chinatown. Wowa! My first impression of this place is for regular customers to come and hang/chill with their buddies. Felt like it was not really a place to make friends or be loud. It was quite...interesting.... They have jukebox, dollar for one music. The restroom have one stall, that I know of, for the women. My friend started to order our first drink, which was AMF.... The bartender was not cheap with the alcohol. Each sip was pretty lethal. The PLUS side that it was inexpensive! LOVE THAT! Especially how strong that drink was. Service was EXCELLENT! The bartender, Lyman was super nice and friendly! Even though he booed LA -.- Lyman, was the only bartender there for couple of hours that I came in. PROPS to him having to deal with so many customers on a Friday night. Jukebox plays random music as to what the customers would request. When my friends added their music and it started to play. We couldn't hear the music, so we ask the bartender and he bumped up the music for us! SUPER NICE! The bartender's friend Jason was there. He was helpful too! Some of us needed water, and he got it for us! THANKS! After we down our AMF, my friend bought another round of shots, so that we can start heading out to other bars. Jason, the bartender friend was outside and we were asking him about other bars around here. He was nice enough to walk us over to the other bars that was popular. But that place called Cosmo was closed, so we ended up back to Mr. Bing! We stayed here all night. We even got other customers to dance with us. Even though this bar is pretty small and not for dancing crazily. This place is CASH ONLY! which is understandable, for their inexpensive prices and strong drink. Once the cash runs out that is when you know you need to stop. AWESOME place! You just got to know how to loosen up and have fun! read more

It's the perfect bar for all the pretend San Franciscans who think they're cool because they live in San Francisco, but are anything but.
