The nut broke on my old classical guitar. I found one that nearly fit, filed it down, and glued it on. Result: terrible intonation. The guitar sounded horrible. So I took it to a shop in Chula Vista near where I worked. The guy told me, "it can't be the nut; a nut can't change the intonation. You need a bridge job for $200." I knew it was the nut, so I went to Moze. They actually listened to my description of the problem, and explained how the nut can indeed affect intonation if the strings rest on it incorrectly. They then created a custom nut and installed it for $30. Result: perfect intonation again. So the place in CV would've charged me $200 for pointless work, while Moze actually fixed my problem for $30. read more

I've been going to Moze for 30 years. I remember playing D-18s and Les Pauls in the old store on College Ave when I was 15 years old and could barely afford the bus fare down El Cajon Blvd let alone a good guitar. Nowadays, Moze is the only place in SD I'd go for work on a $2K+ guitar. (If it was worth less than $2K, I'd deal with it myself). I'll admit The Blue Guitar probably does good work as well. But those dudes used to beat my 15-year-old ass with a P-bass for even looking at a Martin. Moze customer for life. read more

I recently drove from Reno, Nevada all the way down to San Diego to purchase a guitar from Moze Guitars. I called several weeks early and spoke to Gene about a specific guitar I saw on their website and was interested in. It was a Mosrite. These guitars have been increasingly difficult to find - especially in excellent condition. Gene answered all of my questions and was perfectly fine with me checking in several times to ask more questions and keep him updated on my travel schedule. When I arrived, he was extremely accommodating and gave me all the time I needed to play the guitar and test it out. I was most happy with that small business hometown guitar atmosphere and customer service. Something you don't get from the big box stores like Guitar Center. This was a REAL privately owned guitar store the way I grew up with in the 60's, 70's and 80's. I deleted a previous bad review because I thought maybe I was being unreasonable. But I was not. I brought in my wife's little art and Lutherie parlor guitar to have it set up and they just did a really crappy job. Then I brought it in an amp because I needed some tube work done. I call after a month and was told the tube amp guy was sick. I was assured he would be back. He didn't but never got a call. Three months and nothing. Now I took in a dean banjitar to set up and have frets dressed. Months and nothing. Went and got it back and took it to Sam Ash. A little more money but I will get it back Tuesday. Some people seem to like moze but that has not been my experience and I have reason to doubt all of these good reviews. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I came here about a year ago to have some work done on one of my guitars. I had one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a store. It was openly misogynist and very unprofessional. Here's what happened: Three guys were behind the counter when I came in. While I was waiting for one to assess the work on my guitar, Guy #1 says something about an item being $5. Guy #2 shouts in response, "What! That's more than I'd pay for a hooker lap dance!" Gross. I kept waiting, and watched as the men proceeded to talk to each other about my guitar, without bothering to ask me a word about it; Not why I set it up the way I did, or what style I play, or what my goal was with the adjustment. Literally, talked right over my head. Like I wasn't even there. Guy #3 speculating about string gauges (I could have answered this, had I been able to get a word in); Guy #1 says, right over my head: "Well, she doesn't bend, does she?" Are you fing kidding me? I've been a professional musician for upwards of 15 years. He didn't know anything about me, yet proceeded to make massive (and false) judgements about my abilities and style, made more degrading by the fact he deemed me incapable of answering that question myself. Apparently it required another man's opinion, rather than that of the musician herself. Awful. Followed by, again directly over my head, "She probably just strums and accompanies." Like, seriously? Because I'm a woman walking in with an acoustic guitar (which apparently according to them, women just stare at, don't play, and know nothing about) I'm automatically relegated to a category of less competence? With the added belittling qualifier of "just"? To add insult to injury, the guy behind me walked up, placed his guitar on the counter, and was met with a straightforward greeting and questions about his guitar, a totally different experience than mine. I was stunned, sickened, and just wanted to get out of there at that point. I didn't think it could get any worse but it did. I asked for my guitar back and as I was closing the case muttered under my breath a comment, something like, "So much for being a gal in a guitar shop." Which the guy closest to me heard (Trevor? Travis? Medium length dark hair)- And proceeded to drape himself over the counter in response, sticking his chest out as though to display pretend breasts, and leaning forward to stick his butt out with one hand on it, emitting high-pitched giggling, twirling his hair, imitating what apparently he thinks of as a woman. Which according to him (and the other guys at this place) is unintelligent and solely sexualized. I was nauseous at that point and beelining it for the door, when I saw a little girl (9? 10?) entering the store with her guitar for a lesson and my stomach dropped at the thought of these unchecked attitudes around little ones. PLEASE, do not send your daughters here for lessons, lest they grow up to view themselves the way Trevor and the others view them. Or your sons for that matter, lest they grow up to be like these guys, with open bigotry, unchecked arrogance, and perpetuation of rape culture. And don't believe what they say- Believe what they do when no one's looking (like when they thought I wasn't.) Take your business elsewhere. Please don't support these guys. Support equality and respect for your fellow humans by going somewhere else. It's disheartening to see that these attitudes are still so prevalent, especially in guitar-land; But so worth it to find other places that aren't so rife with misogyny, and that treat people with respect regardless of gender, color, etc. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB as well; I mainly wanted to posted this so parents can send be spared sending their kids to an environment like this. Well, I've browsed through here before, my experience here so far is that the customer service is fantastic. I was able to come in here and basically chat about guitar for a little bit with one of the workers. It's really a local guitar shop. Electric guitar selection is no good here. They do have a good selection of acoustic guitars though and they are priced below online prices. (At least the martin I looked at was.) I recommend at least checking them out. Also they do guitar fixing and customizing but I have never tried them out. They apparently will do extensive work. read more

I bought a used Epiphone ES-175 on Craigslist for a decent price. I took it to Guitar Center for a set up. I told them about the intonation problem due to the floating Tune-O-matic bridge. After much frustration trying to set up one of my strats a good friend of mine recommended taking it to moze and having them do a setup. I dropped off the guitar and was taken care of by polite staff. I got my guitar back and when I tested it in the shop it felt great. I went home and put it away. Unfortunately after a couple of the days the neck bowed again (I suspect the heat) and the guitar was once again all out of adjustment.I took it back and George readjusted it no questions asked and the problem was solved. The entire staff was accommodating and understanding. They even warranty their work for 30 days. Ill definitely be bringing my other guitars here where I know I can trust the luthiers. Bought a signature Gibson Flying V online. Got it home and after 3 hours of playing the corina nut cracked. Moze guitars fixed me up right! Simply fantastic. Last year my Pop passed away and I inherited his 1953 Kay acoustic guitar. But it wasn't in playable condition. The guys at MOZE restored the guitar back to a beautiful, playable instrument that I can hand down to my son years from now.
