I LOVE an old school guitar shop filled with GORGEOUS gear with a friendly and helpful staff. These guys are gonna do the sh* GC won't do!!! Went in today with my whole rig because they welcomed me to so that we could take a look at some of the issues I was having. All problems solved. Really appreciate it, guys. read more

I shop here before going to a corporate owned music store. The service is friendly and enjoyable. Buy your guitars from Moze!

Gene was EXCELLENT! So knowledgeable and helpful. I'll be back soon for any and all guitar questions or issues!

First time dropping into Moze. My e string was buzzing and at the recommendation of my guitar teacher, I stopped in to see if they could help diagnose the issue and doctor it up. I was in and out in 3 minutes with a tuned and repaired guitar! And they helped me out free of charge. Awesome service, and it's so nice to have a local guitar shop. Will definitely be back for any future guitar needs or accessories. read more

Genuinely just great vibes all around. Their online catalog is accurate- I came in and picked up my new-to-me Taylor mini for an extremely fair price, plus some free picks and strings. Again, so friendly and fair + a great selection. read more

I visited a Sam Ash store in search of a mandolin. They were going out of business, and were sold out. Fortunately, the sales associate recommended Moze Guitars. Walt helped me purchase an F-style model. He tuned it for me, answered all my questions, and set me up with a tuner, strings, and picks. He even found a ukulele case that was donated to the store, and gave it to me, no charge. I'm an absolute beginner, and Walt and the other folks at Moze were very welcoming. I came back a week later, and Walt assisted me with attaching a strap. I have a couple of books on playing the mandolin, but when I'm ready, I'll be back. Moze works with an instructor, Mark Madruga. I have his card. I'm really glad I found Moze Guitars. It's not a huge superstore, but well-stocked. The guys are terrific, and very helpful. read more

I've gone to Moze Guitars since I was a teenager and always received top quality work. However, my 2 most recent visits left a lot to be desired; not only with the quality of the repair work they did, but also the customer service. I had to bring my instruments back each time for issues that should not have been overlooked. Yes they guarantee the work, and did fix it without additional charges, but they should be better about these things from the beginning. The veterans who work there, like Walt and Moze, are amazing and great guys, but the younger guys who are there nowadays need a lot of customer service training. I tried expressing my concerns in a reasonable way but while still getting my point across, and was immediately met with aggression and statements like, "If you don't like the work we do, you don't have to come here.... You're making a big deal out of something that's not a big deal (I wasn't)..." etc. I will not be taking my instruments here for repair work any longer, and that saddens me, because I really like some of the guys there, but I won't be disrespected again like I was last time. read more

I brought in this 1967 German German Framus 12 string and I had brought it to other guitar shops in the past and the action was really high and it was really difficult to play. No one else seem to be able to get it to where it needed to be. Jeremiah worked on it and he plays like a dream. Now it's like a whole new guitar. I will be bringing all my guitars to Moze from now on. They have a really cool selection of guitars and really cool amps. Great guys. read more

Back in La Mesa to visit Mom (94) again and back to Moze Guitars, where Gene again loaned me an acoustic guitar for the day. These musical visits are a real treat for all of us and Moze helps make it possible. This shop is not a musical instrument store, it is a Guitar shop, in every way. From the staff knowledge to the amazing musicians, who seem to always be there playing every style of music. I have a 40 year old Guild acoustic which needs a tune-up. If I ever drive to La Mesa, I will bring it with me and ask these guys to do the work. Bernie read more

This is the single best guitar store in San Diego county. Gene and staff are just "The business", great bunch of guys that really care about "After Sales". So many shops like Guitar Center just back up their sales with a return policy, not Gene and crew. These guys really advise you and help you pick the right guitar FOR YOU. Prices are excellent and very competitive, plus you'll find some really hard to find stuff you just can't locate easily. It's piece of mind buying through Moze as I know the guitar has been checked out and verified before being sold. This is why I avoid buying instruments online like the plague. Another cool thing about Moze is they sell Amps and other stringed instruments, I've even seen an occasional old synth! You can also take music lessons here and the staff is just really knowledgeable. I'm a real stickler for service and these guys are truly the best I've encountered in San Diego county. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

I've been going off and on to Moze since the 70s? And as you can read in the reviews, sometimes you get lucky and deal with one of the old timers. I had the misfortune of having to interact with a guy at the front desk for my experience who was unpleasant, condescending, and a liar. I brought my G and L in for a setup and to have Fender noisless pickups installed. The first issue was it took far longer than originally estimated, almost a month. The second was the setup was too low and the strings buzzed - It was so obvious even Walt, one of the old timers concurred. The tech took it back and fiddled for a minute and handed it back. When I got home it was still buzzing so I raised it myself. I also noted the intonation was off. I then noticed the pickguard was extremely warped. I took it back and showed it to Walt and the tech. They said it was an old pickguard and warping was natural, that I should go to a few websites and look for a replacement. I got home and did some research on replacing pickguards, and while I was inspecting the guitar I noticed that the issue wasn't warping from old age - The issue was the tech had tried to cram the larger pickups into an area they weren't designed for and the pickguard was now raised on both sides. I took it back again to show them and my front desk guy tried to tell me they had explained the issue to me. That's a boldfaced lie. I was told it was age. At any rate, I told them to put my old pickups back. And I also mentioned while they were doing that to check the intonation and setup, as I had been forced to fix the setup issues myself. When I picked it up I asked about a partial refund (The setup and pickup install was $150) In my view the tech should have called me as soon as he realized the pickups weren't a good fit and were distorting the pickguard. Front desk guy blew up. According to him they had set the guitar up three times for me which was totally false. And he felt they had done me a favor by not charging me to re-install the old pickups. I told him I'd let the bank figure it out since I have to now dispute the charge. Gene, another old timer, had assured me the work was guaranteed for 30 days when I initially dropped the guitar off. Word of advice: If you do bring something back be prepared to be villainized. The worst part is they screwed up my vintage G and L. See the photo. They cracked the pickup and installed them incorrectly, once again distorting the pickguard. There was not a space there when I dropped it off. At least the setup feels better, although the intonation is still not right. Hopefully they haven't messed anything else up. I should take them to small claims court for what they did to my vintage guitar I've had for 20 years. So be advised. This place isn't what it used to be. read more

Great store if you're in the market for vintage equipment. Before coming here, do not expect to find 100-200 Ibanez, squire, etc. (cheap big box brands). There may be limited selections of that stuff, but it's not what they specialize in. Come here for old-school and quality instruments with character. They definitely have affordable options, just not the bottom of the line. Had pleasant interactions with the staff and learned a little about the history of guitars in San Diego. Very glad I stopped by. Will certainly come back when I save up enough to get a high end guitar. read more

I had received a few guitars from private party sales that had work done at Moze, was impressed with the work and decided to bring a guitar to have pickups installed and new electronics - I called a few shops and Moze had the best price in the area by far and they did a great job getting my guitar ready and quick turnaround. Every staff member was knowledgeable and friendly offering good advice and recommendations. Their selection of guitars is also great, seemingly at all price points. Highly recommend, will be going back to get all my repairs/mods done and I've got my eyes on some of their inventory read more

I brought in my brand new fender player strat and I was nervous to hand it off to anybody but these guys delivered early and made me feel like my guitar was in good hands. They don't just blindly take in your guitar and put a cookie cutter set up on it and call it a day. They will inspect it in front of you and pick your brain about your preferences to tuning, strings, and are more than happy to make suggestions if you don't know. If you love your guitar, they will absolutely love it too. They kept complimenting the look of my guitar, so I knew they wouldn't forget about it like most shops. I'm sure if you brought back a guitar for adjustments, they would probably remember you, your axe, and the case it came in. They gave me a week estimate but got it back to me within a few days playing WAAAY better than when it came out of the factory. They said I can stop by any time if I need any more adjustments. I was so happy with these guys, I ended up leaving a bass with them that same day. I love playing my guitar so much more now and since the color stood out to these guys so much, I've started calling it John Mayo. I've left an acoustic 3 weeks ago at another REPAIR shop in the Clairemont ZONE and I still haven't gotten it back. In the mean time I've gotten my guitar in and out of Moze in a fraction of that time. I will never go to another guitar shop unless it's Moze. To all those who have been searching for the best guitar shop in San Diego, this is the place. read more

Moze Guitars is a San Diego institution that I fully endorse! I used to venture into their old location by College years back and were always impressed with their knowledge and workshop as well. These are skilled craftspeople who are passionate about their profession and it shows. Since my Telecaster needed some TLC in the electronic department due to issues with scratchiness and wiring I had to take it to Moze's. Not only did they remedy the issue in a timely fashion, but it seems like it is better than ever now and that is great news for me! Extra friendly and pleasant staff and I highly recommend them for any repairs or setups your instrument needs as well as their always interesting selection of instruments, amps, and accessories on site. Thanks Moze and I'll be back again soon! read more

Moze Guitars - Gene worked on my Fender Strat (Mexico). The best repair service in So. Cal. - Musical Instruments & Teachers Near Me - La Mesa, California

I brought my 4003 Rickenbacker bass to Moze guitars in La Mesa ,Ca for extensive repairs and upgrades. I required two new truss rods because my 2008 4003 model had Star washers that ate into the body side of the maple neck under the pick guard. This made proper set up impossible because the treble side rod was useless. Getting the old truss rods out was a p.i.t.a. because of the old wrap around the rods installed by the factory to "quiet" the rods. The techs all put thought into the best way to repair the damaged wood and prevent reoccurrence of the sinking rod. They also installed the new Rickenbacker V2 tailpiece and bridge. Wow! The guitar is now not only much better in playability, function and sound than when I brought the bass in to them it is better than when I got it new from the factory(after waiting for delivery for almost two years). The action, intonation and really the entire set up is right on. The Optima RB flats are also fantastic. Thanks to Moze, Walt, Jeremiah, and Gene!!' read more

I've brought in an old broken acoustic and their repair man did a great job restoring it to it's former glory. The repair was done BEFORE their estimated date. Be honest about your capabilities. I was given the estimation of a 10 day wait for my guitar set up. With no call or update from Moze guitars I decided to pick it up after it got to 20 days waiting. I sent my dad to get it and they apologized and asked for two more days. Two days past and nothing. So I went and picked it up after more than 3 weeks of waiting for it to be in the same condition as I left it. If the business has a lot of orders I can understand that, but you need to be honest to your customers about your capabilities. read more

After waiting a week, I became impatient picked up my banjo and took it to Moze to complete the job. Moze did an excellent job in no time flat and fugh íor reasonable fee. Don't get me wrong Guitar Center does do good work on guitars, but Banjos are a different story. I always regret it when I take an instrument elsewhere for repair. Moze is THE place to take your guitar if you need a repair! I have a old Regal from the 1940's that has been in my family for years. The neck was warped to the point it was only good for playing slide guitar. Because the action was almost a half inch off the fingerboard the guitar sounded great but was unplayable. I sent it to Moze for a neck reset and fret level. The work was completed on time and my guitar was delivered back to me promptly and packed correctly. I can't express how happy I am with the repair!!! They kept the integrity of the guitar intact and now it plays like a dream. Have stopped by a few times now, one just before they were closing and so we just peeked in and saw they had a lot of cool stuff and then another time to check out acoustic options. Quite a variety of gear available, from budget/student options on up to high end and rare acoustics and vintage amps. Staff are pretty busy with projects behind the counter it seems but have been very welcoming and friendly when I needed some input. They are pretty open to just letting you look/play and can also take time to answer your questions if you have them. Much better experience than going to Guitar Center and trying to hear your own thoughts, plus you are supporting small local business. Will be back for sure! read more

The nut broke on my old classical guitar. I found one that nearly fit, filed it down, and glued it on. Result: terrible intonation. The guitar sounded horrible. So I took it to a shop in Chula Vista near where I worked. The guy told me, "it can't be the nut; a nut can't change the intonation. You need a bridge job for $200." I knew it was the nut, so I went to Moze. They actually listened to my description of the problem, and explained how the nut can indeed affect intonation if the strings rest on it incorrectly. They then created a custom nut and installed it for $30. Result: perfect intonation again. So the place in CV would've charged me $200 for pointless work, while Moze actually fixed my problem for $30. read more

I was looking for a guitar shop that could install a Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag Mic pickup in my Taylor acoustic guitar. I'm super picky, so I got on Yelp to find the right shop. Moze was the only 5-star shop in my area, so I brought in my guitar last Friday afternoon. The estimate was reasonable for the work to be done, and I was promised that the work would be completed by Tuesday of the following week (it was Memorial Day weekend), and maybe sooner. Sure enough, I got a call on Saturday afternoon that the work was done. Moze did an EXCELLENT job with the installation, perfect in fact. Very happy with the work and the service -- the pickup sounds great. Moze is my new go-to for guitar repairs and adjustments. Thanks! read more
