I took a 3 hour workshop in 2023 for a beginner sewing project and enjoyed myself. My husband bought me a machine to encourage md and support my new hobby. But I felt so intimated by my new machine. I ticked it away for years but I saw an email for a Moving Thread beginner 4-week workshop. 3 hours each session. Last night was class 1 of 4. My class was six ladies aged from mid 20s to late 60s. One never sewed. Two hand sewed. And two of us used machines 20 and 30 years ago and one lady had a machine and used it but felt intimidated. So we were all pretty nervous about our fledgling sewing skills. But the class was paced perfectly and by the end of our first class we successfully completed beautiful reversible totes! The workshop is $550 and it's a great value: project 1 tote, project 2 zipper pouch, project 3 pants (two classes). Our instructor was warm, friendly, funny, knowledgeable, helpful. My only drawback are the chairs. They're not comfortable for me and my leg felt like it wanted to go numb. No one else seemed uncomfortable so maybe it's just me. I'll try a seat cushion to see if it'll help. I brought my machine with me so I could learn how to use it but my husband actually bought the same Heavy Duty Singer sewing machine provided in the class for student use. All the equipment, accessories, fabric needed is provided by the class. You only need to show up. No good or drink allowed in classroom but water is okay. Be sure to enter the rear entrance let the instructions in your student information email. Because to show up on time. Basically no make classes. So if you sign up be sure you're schedule is free for the specified time period. If you're thinking of taking a quick afternoon class or a full workshop I highly recommend you give Moving Thread a try. The instructor we had last night has her own fashion label and is highly knowledgeable but gave us very easy instructions that us newbies could follow. The was patient with our foibles and created an atmosphere of grace and fun. I look forward to my to rest of classes Eventually I look forward to trying the advanced class offerings too. Love love love Moving Thread. I have done a parent/child class where we each made a bag. Was empowering to learn how to use a sewing machine and actually make something useful from raw materials. My child has done the Fashion Camp in the summer twice and loved it both times. So cool for her to be able to design and then create her own clothes. Has opened up a whole world for her. I had such a great experience sewing with Lissa! I had a project I wanted to complete - making a sweater - but I wasn't sure if I would be capable. We got straight to work with my fabric and pattern; cutting, pinning and sewing. Lissa had every tool needed and gave me a refresh (I hadn't used a machine in many years). I learned so much and Lissa let me handle as much as I felt comfortable with, and I watched her do the more advanced techniques. I would feel more comfortable trying the more advanced work next time! TL;DR: Run, don't walk, to this class! I just took the intro to sewing 4 week intensive. Being the mom of a 4 year old and a 1 year older, I was nervous about covid. She assured me that it would only be me and one other student, masks required, opposite ends of the room, sanitized machines, etc, and I figured if I didn't feel safe, I'd just reschedule. And WOW am I happy I took the course! I can't speak highly enough about it. First, about the covid precautions - you enter her beautifully airy converted garage, and she greets you masked, offering a squirt of hand sanitizer and a temperature check, even for herself. Each station is at opposite ends of the room, right next to the garage door opening which is up, so you're basically sewing outside. There's a bottle of water and hand sanitizer at each station, and each student has their own steam iron and sewing pins and scissors and thread set and everything. A++ for safety! The classes themselves are amazing. I have enjoyed every minute of every class. For the intensive, you learn a new project each week, and all materials are provided (unless you want to bring your own fabric). Sure, sewing is intimidating, but Lissa is so patient, and so so cool and stylish (her rack of clothes that she actually made in the studio - crazy inspiring!). I'm really picky about what I spend time on (ahem, pillowcases, ahem), and she made sure we made things that we actually wanted to be seen with. We made a reversible tote bag, a cosmetic bag, two masks, and our final piece was a blouse. I love EVERYTHING. I'd get home, and my husband and nanny were like "are you sure you made that??". I cannot wait to take more classes with Lissa, and am going to be recommending them forever. It's no surprise Dwyane Wade and his mother took a sewing class here. Thank you so much, Lissa! HANDS DOWN A MUST TRY CLASS. Registered a while back for a mother-daughter class and had to reschedule. When it came time to attend class, i wasn't thrilled. Nice location in West LA - come a few minutes earlier so you have time to find street parking in the residential neighborhood. It was a small class of about 10 people in the back of a creative shop. The work space was clean and airy. They provide all supplies including sewing machine, fabric, tools for the project. Overall it was a nice productive afternoon and the best part is you end up with a final product you can be proud of. In my case, it was a tote bag! This was my first time at Moving Thread and my first sewing class. My friend and I signed up for the Intro to Sewing Class and we came away with not only a new skill but utmost respect for this creative art. I had to admit I was intimidated at the beginning with technicalities of starting the sewing machine but Lissa was so patient, articulate, and gave great instructions that once I got to practicing on a pattern then making my own chambray tote bag, I got into the groove of it! The quietness of the room and the rhythmic sounds of the sewing machine was very therapeutic! The intimate class (4 people maximum) in her charming studio behind her house, the delicious refreshments, and her calm demeanor was conducive to a great learning experience! She taught us how to look for great quality work in clothes and bags-how the inside should look as seamless as the outside. She gave us individual attention and let us go about at our own pace. I also love the fact that her philosophy entails being kinder to the earth by buying less, repairing what we already own, and making our own clothes. I walked out of this experiencing feeling like I should have paid more money, like I just met awesome and lovely, caring and kind humans (that's including our beautiful instructor Lissa who is a goddess of the needle). I learned a life skill. I learned more sewing skills in my 3 hour intro course than I did an entire semester of home economics. This was a fantastic experience and it could not have been better. From the quaint, beautiful, bright and immaculate workspace, to the personal, special touches like cookies and french-pressed coffee...this class is done to perfection and I couldn't give a single piece of constructive criticism if I tried. The class is small & intimate and that's what intrigued me in the first place since i had no previous experience about sewing whatsoever ! So it was perfect for me. I have been wanting to learn how to sew forever and finally got the chance to take an awesome sewing class at Moving Thread LA! I made a reversible tote bag! I still can't believe I made it!!!! Granted I had the help of a great teacher-Lissa! Lissa had everything planned out, all the materials were supplied, a run down of how sewing machines work was explained and we even got to do a practice run on felt pads that had white tailor lines drawn on it to practice sewing straight lines. Lissa definitely made it feel a lot easier to sew and I felt so accomplished leaving her studio with something I made!!! And speaking of her studio, Lissa has created such a creative, clean and well set up space and has a pretty great playlist going while we all sew!! I took a workshop with Lissa a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Within the space of a few hours, we learned the basics of using a sewing machine (she has very current models that are much easier to use than my grandmother's!) and created beautiful tote bags using an indigo fabric provided by Lissa. One of the things that struck me is what great taste Lissa has -- from the bag pattern to the other garment patterns that are available, and even her charming light-filled Venice studio. She provides instruction in a very easy to understand, helpful sort of way, but is also patient and offers a laid back atmosphere. And the breakfast provided was delicious! This is a hidden gem of a workshop; I took my boyfriend, as he is interested in creating his own clothing, and I came for moral support :) I knew nothing about sewing and wasnt sure how much I would take a liking to it, but with zero experience, not only did I quickly become immersed in the project, but the teacher was A+ !! She was so Perfect for what we need; extremely patient and thorough and allowed us to take home what we created in our first beginners class. Personally, I had always been intimidated by the sewing machine. Far too many buttons and gadgets to attempt on my own. However Lissa broke everything down to small, easy to understand steps.
