Fantastic! We are signed up for our 4th round. My daughter LOVES it, as a parent we love it. Multiple physical project outputs, creativity, consistency, community. This is 20hours of work in 8 weeks! It is wonderful to see my daughter feel pride in what she created and have everyone helping. This class is truly fantastic. My daughter is 8 and she is designing her own pattern, printing, cutting, sewing entire outfits. Unreal!

Sewing my sweater!

I had such a great experience sewing with Lissa! I had a project I wanted to complete - making a sweater - but I wasn't sure if I would be capable. We got straight to work with my fabric and pattern; cutting, pinning and sewing. Lissa had every tool needed and gave me a refresh (I hadn't used a machine in many years). I learned so much and Lissa let me handle as much as I felt comfortable with, and I watched her do the more advanced techniques. I would feel more comfortable trying the more advanced work next time! Lissa was very kind and patient throughout and the sweater turned out exactly as I hoped. I'm so proud to wear it knowing I had a hand in making it! If you have any interest in sewing, I would highly recommend working with Lissa no matter your level of experience!

The blouse I made as our final project! (I brought my own fabric)

TL;DR: Run, don't walk, to this class! I just took the intro to sewing 4 week intensive. Being the mom of a 4 year old and a 1 year older, I was nervous about covid. She assured me that it would only be me and one other student, masks required, opposite ends of the room, sanitized machines, etc, and I figured if I didn't feel safe, I'd just reschedule. And WOW am I happy I took the course! I can't speak highly enough about it. First, about the covid precautions - you enter her beautifully airy converted garage, and she greets you masked, offering a squirt of hand sanitizer and a temperature check, even for herself. Each station is at opposite ends of the room, right next to the garage door opening which is up, so you're basically sewing outside. There's a bottle of water and hand sanitizer at each station, and each student has their own steam iron and sewing pins and scissors and thread set and everything. A++ for safety! The classes themselves are amazing. I have enjoyed every minute of every class. For the intensive, you learn a new project each week, and all materials are provided (unless you want to bring your own fabric). Sure, sewing is intimidating, but Lissa is so patient, and so so cool and stylish (her rack of clothes that she actually made in the studio - crazy inspiring!). I'm really picky about what I spend time on (ahem, pillowcases, ahem), and she made sure we made things that we actually wanted to be seen with. We made a reversible tote bag, a cosmetic bag, two masks, and our final piece was a blouse. I love EVERYTHING. I'd get home, and my husband and nanny were like "are you sure you made that??". I cannot wait to take more classes with Lissa, and am going to be recommending them forever. It's no surprise Dwyane Wade and his mother took a sewing class here. Thank you so much, Lissa! You've instilled so much confidence in me. I'll definitely be back!

Such a charming studio.

This was my first time at Moving Thread and my first sewing class. My friend and I signed up for the Intro to Sewing Class and we came away with not only a new skill but utmost respect for this creative art. I had to admit I was intimidated at the beginning with technicalities of starting the sewing machine but Lissa was so patient, articulate, and gave great instructions that once I got to practicing on a pattern then making my own chambray tote bag, I got into the groove of it! The quietness of the room and the rhythmic sounds of the sewing machine was very therapeutic! The intimate class (4 people maximum) in her charming studio behind her house, the delicious refreshments, and her calm demeanor was conducive to a great learning experience! She taught us how to look for great quality work in clothes and bags-how the inside should look as seamless as the outside. She gave us individual attention and let us go about at our own pace. I also love the fact that her philosophy entails being kinder to the earth by buying less, repairing what we already own, and making our own clothes. Not a lot of people especially in the fashion industry has that mindset. And that is so refreshing. Thank you Lissa for an amazing experience!

Here are the awesome reversible bags we made in the 3 hour intro course!

I should be suing this business. He left a very expensive jacket by the iron and completely burned the back and guess what when I picked it up he didn't say anything. I had to go back after a few days and deal with that and I got a few hundred dollars back, but the jacket was $3000 He didn't even have the kindness to leave some fabrics inside to eventually modify. Save yourself time and money.

Sadly today was my last time patronizing Isabel and Fernando's business. I've been going to them…read morefor years because they did great work and I liked them. It's not at all convenient for me geographically but quality work and people took precedence over convenience. In late December/early January I had a very expensive suit altered. I tried it on and thought it was okay. Then I left and after wearing it the first time, I decided the waist of the pants was a little tight. I brought it back and to her credit, Isabel said no problem and offered to tweak them for no additional cost. When I picked them up, I was in a rush and did not try them on because it was only a small fix and they otherwise perfect previously. I ended up not wearing the suit for about six weeks. This week I put it on and was shocked to find that they had altered the pants length absurdly. They weren't even supposed to change the length, only waist. They were capri pants. They stopped at mid calf. They were ruined because there was not enough fabric to fix. I went to the store today and Isabel told me if I could get the same pants she would Zelle me for them. I then drove all the way to the Century City mall and spent 50 minutes tracking them down. Bought them and drove all the way back to Isabel's. First, when I walked in she told me she checked the camera and I had tried the pants on when I picked them up and didn't say anything. This makes no sense as 1) the pants were visually and obviously cartoonishly too short. There is no conceivable explanation. 2) I didn't try them on so there is no way she checked any video of me doing that. Then she tells me she can get the same pants for half off (I don't actually believe that) so she only wants to send me 1/2 the cost of the pants. I said no. She ruined the pants and told me she would pay for them and I just spent 2 hours going back and forth to get them. And if she could get the same pants herself why didn't she tell me that before when I told her I was leaving to go buy the pants (she had no answer to that). Then Fernando came out and suggested I had waited too long to come back. At this point I got offended and gave up and told them to give me the pants and keep their money. I don't need their money. I've been a long time customer with no problems ever. I have no idea what happened but they ruined them and by default the suit. Either they want to take ownership for their mistake or they don't. But I'm not accepting any amount of money from them if they don't believe me. That's it. Everything is fine until it isn't. It's a shitty way to do business and I will not be returning.

From the start, she was honest, professional, and refreshingly transparent. She didn't promise me the sun, moon, and stars -- instead, she clearly explained that with her current workload she couldn't guarantee anything, but if I was willing to come in, she would take a look and see if there was anything she could do to help. When I arrived, she had me try on the dress, and within minutes it was clear she was both experienced and highly knowledgeable. She immediately put me at ease by explaining that the dress wasn't as problematic as I thought and that the design was meant to drape a certain way. At the same time, she validated my concerns about the fit, managed my expectations beautifully, and presented thoughtful options -- including a couple that didn't even require her services. Ultimately, she suggested adding a discreet clasp to provide support and concealment without compromising the cut or flow of the dress. She completed it in under five minutes, using a transparent clasp and perfectly color-matched thread. The craftsmanship was seamless. She charged me a very nominal fee, and when I tried to tip her, she insisted it was too much and even handed a few dollars back. Talk about integrity -- fair, honest, and truly old-school. I absolutely loved the experience and will most definitely be back.
