The Pilates Loft - Suspension class with Larry

The Pilates Loft is located inside East Meets West Yoga (Buffalo Foundry location). Parking can be…read morea little wonky so you might want to get there early (this is a shared space so lots of competition for parking, but generally you can find something). When I entered I was greeted by the EMW front desk staff and directed back to the Pilates room. The room itself is quite beautiful and well appointed. There is some Pilates equipment (forgive me that I don't know the name of all of it), but the course that I was taking focused on mat work. There are plenty of mats available if you don't have one. Larry was our instructor and he was outstanding. He walked the class through a series of warm ups and then the Pilates exercises. Larry was clearly an expert in anatomy and physiology, which really impressed me. He walked us through each exercise and made sure that we were all attending to proper form. Since the class was small, Larry was able to give lots of individual attention (which I loved). After class was over, he checked in with me to ensure that everything went well and that I felt comfortable in the class. I even forgot my water bottle after class and he ran it out to me in the parking lot. Overall, I would recommend the Pilates loft if you are looking to get friendly and personal Pilates instruction in a location where you could also get your yoga on. The workout wasn't as intense as I generally like, but keep in mind tha this was only my second Pilates class and I'm sure that with time it can be intensified.

I am a huge fan of pilates regardless, but was blown away by this class and the space here. The…read moreinstructors know what they are doing and are fantastic at giving you no-touch, descriptive instruction that completely changes your form. I feel like I actually understand what I am doing when I'm in class here. Wonderful open loft/factory style space with large windows. Max I've seen in class here is four people, so you can really get the customized attention you might want. Parking is a bit of a pickle, as the spaces are two deep and you may get blocked in by someone at a longer yoga session. So just be aware when parking. If you know you have to leave in a hurry you can let the front desk know and they'll stick a cone behind your car.

I joined 9 months ago and really dedicated myself. I purchased an unlimited membership and made a…read moregoal of going to 5 classes a week. This was fairly easy to accomplish, especially since they had early morning classes. They recently changed the morning instructors and schedule which threw my schedule off. It is challenging when the first class of the morning many mornings starts late. It wasn't always like that, but has been lately. My honest feedback is that most of the instructors are very good, they really help you get to your next level. There have been classes where instead of instructing the instructor just keeps repeating her direction rather than actually assisting the person who isn't doing the move correctly. But based on the glances from the long time attendees this is just to be expected sometimes. The classes are good, but don't try to go to some of the instructors if you are newer to Pilates. The other challenge is that they 12 reformers into a small space. That means there are times when class time is spent rearranging the room. Most other studios only have 6-8 reformers per room. There is a room for private lessons, but that isn't frequently used from my perspective (I could be wrong) which would make the space more functional if used to expand the class studio. The other thing is that the way the studio is laid out if you are on one of the reformers towards the entrance of the studio throughout the year at various times you will be blinded by the sun. Something a simple solar shade on the door would fix, but every time I suggested it I was told not to hold my breath for that. All in all, despite the shortcomings, I continued to go until I moved and started working out of the area because I really liked the classes. They offered a large number of early classes, and the unlimited membership price was reasonable, as long as I made it to 20 classes a month, which most of the time I did. If they were to open another studio in that was convenient to my new location I would consider joing it again.

I am prefacing this by saying that I have being going to Club Pilates just shy of a year and have…read morefound my groove and love it. But I want to give a fair review for all others that might be curious. Before I came to club pilates, I had a few years of foundational pilates from smaller reformer studios as well as private instruction. I did the 30 minute Intro class to get a feel for the studio and decide if I would like it or not. From there, I signed up for an unlimited membership and it has been worth it for me. I have an extremely flexible schedule with a lot of availability, therefore it makes it very easy for me to get signed up for the classes that I want. I can't speak on anyone else's experience getting into classes since it has been easy for me. I have taken classes from every instructor and have my preferences for sure, however I think if I was BRAND NEW to pilates, this would not be the place for me at all. I find success here because I can follow verbal cues easily since I have that foundation. I have my preferences of instructors because I have taken classes with them and I know what I am getting into. Suzanne- CLASSICAL. No music, lights on. Can come across as "strict" or intimidating to some but I would describe her as passionate and strict because she needs to be. She does not want anyone getting hurt and therefore she takes doing movements CORRECTLY, very seriously. She often isn't the best at time management because she is trying to ensure that everyone is class is doing things correctly. Angela- Awesome energy. During the school year she doesn't teach as much but she is extremely helpful. I really think that her levels of class are appropriate. She ensures that anyone who might be new gets more of her focus and she often tries to do the movements along with everyone to know the timing and that she isn't killing anyone. Chanel- Lots of energy. Music is great (loud). No lights. She is FAST PACED; no real breaks in between. She will change springs for everyone and get extra equipment as needed so that there isn't time wasted doing that. However, sometimes that's when I need a rest. I get a GREAT, hard workout in with her but I struggle in her level 1 flow classes. Sometimes I find that she won't give a full cue IMO? Like she will explain a movement but miss certain details and then offer corrections, whereas maybe if we were told X,Y,Z from the start, corrections might not be needed. If I were trying to dip my toe into the world of pilates, she might scare me off a bit. Her center and balance classes are lovely. Vanita- Tough but great. I can't speak to a lot of experience with her because I am not an early morning girl and that is mainly when she teaches. I have taken about 3 classes with her and again, level 1 flow- a little more tough if I was inexperienced/out of shape. Vanessa- I don't want to play favorites but we just vibe. She taught my intro class and I wasn't sure I liked her energy but the more classes I have taken with her, the more she is my pick to go back to each week. I think her biological knowledge gives her such a leg up. The way she explains movements or answers questions is incredibly helpful. Telling you exactly where you should feel it and how. She isn't afraid to correct you no matter how long you have been in classes. I think sometimes instructors feel so friendly with people that they feel awkward giving corrections and Vanessa won't do that. I think another thing I really think elevates her is that she gives adaptions for everyone. If you're more advanced she will give ways to level up but always encourages you to meet yourself where you are. Starts at the base and then gives add on options. Her center and balance classes are wonderful. Basically a full 50 minute stretch class where she asks what needs to be targeted and helps everyone with what they request along with a little yoga type meditation. Bethany- Limited to Wednesday instruction but very smart and good at her job. She knows her regular people well and knows how to push a little further or pull back a bit. Quiet spoken so music is usually a bit quieter so that she doesn't have to scream. Flow classes can be tough, but I would say usually appropriately done. Maddie- Such a sweetheart, great energy. Music is always upbeat and she really wants to work people out. Sometimes her level 1 flow can be tough, similar to other instructors where if it was my first time or I was new, I would definitely struggle. Abbey- We just do not click. This is my personal opinion on her classes but she is not for me. I think she struggles with understanding the different levels of classes and it makes me feel unsafe. If I was brand new to pilates I would most definitely not take classes with her. Again, that's just my opinion. It hasn't stopped me from going here. At this point there are a few new instructors, Erin, Mary, Katie that I don't feel I can give total feedback on because I don't have enough experience with.

It's been five months since I started barre, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. (You…read moreshould still try it, though.) Barre is like a mix of pilates, some "ballerina" moves, and a whole lot of sweating. It's ab intense, will make your bun twitch, and muscles shake -- which means things are working. The routines change up, so I'm constantly finding myself grunting during seat work or through "tucks." As intimidating as barre might sound, it's a pretty amazing workout with people from all different fitness backgrounds coming together to burn their abs and legs off (lol). All jokes aside, I consider myself fit-ish, and barre is the only workout that's help dissolve my mom pouch and tone me up. I enjoy the classes, the instructors, and the struggle to push myself and challenge anyone else to give it a try. You'll be sore, but not disappointed!

I'm not always in town - in fact, I'm rarely in town, except summers and crazy stints when I get a wild hair and decide to call the area home for several months - that means finding a workout place can be difficult, especially if you're looking for a place where you feel comfortable but want the accountability factor that group exercise provides. Enter Pure Buffalo - these ladies told me that everyone is family, and I believe them! They greet you by name every class, spend ample time introducing new moves and making sure newbies learn the lingo and form, and are always encouraging, enthusiastic, and extremely professional. I love difficult workouts and was initially skeptical about the difficulty level of barre. I was quickly humbled - the small, precise movements quickly put me in my place - I was a puddle of sweat by the end of the class. The instructors are friendly, knowledgable, and offer modifications to both simplify or challenge, making it a great workout for any fitness level. After blowing through my Groupon 20 pack, I bought another 10 pack, just so I can keep attending classes until I leave. Overall, I feel stronger, more toned, and not as guilty for all the ice cream cones I ate while I was home. :) I will not hesitate to come back and exercise with all the wonderful people at PB next time I'm home.
