Seraphim Joe Fortes. The man, the Vancouver icon, the English Bay fixture
    Herman E.

Vancouver history is why I came here. If you've read some of the wiki info for this cemetery you'd know why this place would prove itself fascinating. There is a lot of historic Vancouver people interred here. Behind every grave, there is a story. Walking tours are available here as well. Go look for it on the website. How many of you have been to Joe Fortes restaurant? Quite a few I would imagine. How many of you knew he was an English Bay fixture at the turn of the century acting as a lifeguard? Maybe not as many of you who have been to the restaurant. How many of you know that his final resting place is here? Not many I'll suspect. I came to have a peek at his site. It was tricky to find if you don't know where it is, but I found it. You can look for it too. Pay the jolly man a visit, and have a look at some of the grave markers. I did. Some people from my original village in China are here. Come for a bit of vancouver history.

On earth one gentle soul the less, in heaven one angel more.

It didn't take long before someone came to the care home to pick up the body. I requested a funeral director who could speak Chinese as well as most of our guests spoke Chinese. I was delighted to see Alex Huang as he helped with my mom's funeral previously. He explained my options regarding the funeral and worked within my budget. He always replied to my messages in a timely manner. He really took the stress out of this difficult situation. At the funeral, I was pleasantly surprised by the Chinese calligraphy brushes and the brush stand as part of decoration near the guestbook as my father loved Chinese calligraphy. The place was beautifully set up. My father looked great!! Alex conducted the service in both English and Chinese so all of our guests were taken care of. The service went well. I just got my father's ashes a week later. Thank you Alex and everybody at Kearney Funeral Services Vancouver.

Can we talk? Needing…read morethe services of Vancouver Memorial Services & Crematorium almost guarantees that you may be in an emotional state when visiting this business. And never forget, this is a business, it must make money, and its sales personnel must make that sale. So begins my tale. My life partner insisted before he died that he wanted me to use VanMem. Well, this is one promise I wish I had broken. From the strangely weird answering service folks to the call returned at close to midnight, this was off-putting. Explicit wishes were for the basic cremation with no service, as stated in his will. Ushered into a crappy little consult room and seated on the hardest of chairs, the 1.5 hour appointment was ... well, one sales pitch after the other. Really, no coffin. How many times must I insist? Don't read this if you wish a lavish, 10k send-off. For us, the basic had been agreed upon. The $95 cardboard would be fine, as there was no viewing, and cremation would burn anything else. The salesman had the audacity to comment that most men don't fit "comfortably" into the cardboard coffin. The truth is, most folks do fit. And you don't need to spend to the limit of the CPP Death Benefit. Jeez, these are sleaze tactics. I know I spent under $2500. CRA is not going to audit me. And the on-site manager, wishing to do the female bonding thing, instantly warmed me with "you like tea? So do I!" Yikes. Sales 101. It wasn't just the churlish salesman. My appointment reminder sent by email stated the appointment time as 2am. The paper work was filled with typos. Just because I wasn't the top customer of the day, don't be childish and vengeful and make silly little errors. PS - still waiting for my new BFF to return my phone call three days later. Tea? If you wish good compassionate service, call someone else.

Among them, Richmond Funeral Home (RFH) managed to have the earliest appointment the next day. Erin met with us on Sunday morning. She is very experienced, professional and knowledgeable about the process, customs and documents. Given that 80% of RFH's customers are Asian, she is well-versed with Chinese traditions and standard document requirements into China (中国通). Erin patiently explained to us the process and showed us a display of caskets and urns that cater to different people's interests and price levels. We have a tight schedule. Erin managed to hold the funeral service on Tuesday afternoon, two days after our initial meeting. On Tuesday, RFH staff picked us up from our residence and took us to a RFH-owned and operated cremation site in South Surrey, where we had a final viewing and paid a final tribute to my father-in-law. Since we are taking the remains and urn to China, RFH provides end-to-end document service to have the original death certificate notarized and translated into Chinese (through Chinese consulate) for border entry into China. Their competency in funeral services and managing document flows for Chinese customers is unparalleled. We are very satisfied by the quality service and a high degree of professionalism in this area which we are not familiar with. In sum, we highly recommend Richmond Funeral Home because of their devoted, highly competent and professional staff, efficient operations and logistics, and most importantly, their expertise in managing document flows and value-added services for Chinese and foreign customers (we are from the US).

They seem to go out of their way to NOT assist with anything unless you chase after them. Our family has a dozen plots here and I will be informing them of the unacceptable service. I also mentioned my experience with some church members and none of them had any thing positive to say about their dealings with them. WHAT??? I was appalled you have got to be joking. Ive used them before so this is why I called to inquire and was taken back by the lack of sympathy for one and for trying to prey on a grieving family. When I buried my mother in 2022 i paid a little more than 6000 for her casket and outside service, the plot we already had with my father, and she had already paid for the opening of the grave. I thought that was expensive but to just cremate an infant you want 6000 dollars.??!!! There was no mistake as I repeated myself 3 times what I wanted and that was the price. Go elsewhere people. We found a place that does it for free for babies in the NICU that was given to us by the social worker at the hospital. Or there is a place called Just cremation in aldergrove who are extremely better priced than this place if you are looking for only a cremation and no services by the funeral home.
