We were hesitant to try this restaurant after reading so many negative reviews. But we read a great many positive reviews too. There seemed to be no middle of the road; either people loved it or hated it. I wondered if Mountain Thai had a schizophrenic, or bi-polar staff. According to the reviewers, sometimes the staff were efficient and friendly, other times they were obnoxious and rude, serving terrible food. What gives?
Well, I was not in the mood for the standard, small town fare of bland meat, taters and overcooked vegetables. Besides, 40% of our party is vegetarian. Asian food was really calling to us, so I decided to take my family there, and we'd make up our own minds. Being in such a remote small town, I wasn't sure if this restaurant was receiving good reviews from locals who don't normally eat good, authentic Thai food, or if the bad reviews were from tourists who never really get out much beyond what they are used to themselves. You know, stuck up city slickers.
Upon entering, I immediately understood the reports of lack of authenticity. Firstly, I'm used to Thai joints being very small, sometimes hole in the wall places. This room was spacious and roomy.
I'm also used to Asian or maybe even classical music playing in the background. Nope, not here. Classic rock.
I read that some reviewer even knocked the place for lack of authenticity because he/she didn't see any Thais working there. Really? You expect Thais in Pinetop, AZ?
But that was where the negatives ended.
We were seated immediately. The decorations were your typical Thai and Asian chotchkies and wall hangings. The waitress, although a 'round eye', was attentive, efficient and friendly. We all received our food within 12 minutes of ordering. Yes, because of some negative reviews, I marked the time.
Now, on to the food. My kids all had variations of Phô, some with meat, some vegan. All gobbled up their soups completely, and were happily satisfied.
My wife had chicken tom ka gai, and loved it. Although she said it was 'spiced for the gringos'. Both she and my son had to add a LOT of chili sauce and jalapeno slices to get their dishes hot enough. But, that's kind of typical of most ethnic restaurants when a white person orders, no matter what ethnicity, no matter what city. So, take note, and order accordingly.
I had chicken masaman curry. I ordered SPICY and got it just barely hot enough. But the curry and other spices in it were wonderful. It was a bit unlike any I've had before. It had more clove in it, maybe? It certainly had a more hearty and robust flavor. I also noticed a large slice of some sort of squash in it. I never would have thought to put squash in masaman curry. It was quite delicious!
So, to conclude, it was good for all 5 of us all around. At least in our experience, the negative reviews are unfounded. We will definitely come back next time we are in Pinetop. read more
