Horrible shop! Me and my buddy get a Pre Purchase inspection (PPI) done here yesterday on a Subaru. What I thought was going to be a helpful thing to do for the peace of mind of buying a car turned out to be the biggest waste of time and money ever. They had the car for only about an hour and noted A TON of things "wrong" with the car or needing parts like spark plugs, air filters, etc. I thought they were right and didn't think anything of it. They even said the "clutch was dirty" idk how they were able to look at the clutch in less than an hour without dropping the transmission lol. After talking to the dealer it took about 30 seconds to dismiss almost every claim Mountain Tech had noted and realize they didn't inspect the car at all and didn't actually look at anything. As I stood there I was shown brand new spark plugs, extremely clean new air filters, and other things they noted were clearly in a very different condition than what Mountain Tech had noted on their inspection report. Great service. Clean organized friendly. Took my Subaru to three dealers to see who was honest. Two said I have head gaskets that are going to fail and tried to pressure me into a rip off service I didn't need. This place was honest and my vehicle was fixed quick and for a fair price. Mountain Tech has been great with my and my husband's Subarus! Used to go to Carr but Mrn Tech is less expensive and very very good. SWEET staff are always friendly and helpful. Bought a used '05 Forester from them, too, when it was time to replace my '99 Outback. In fall 2023, Mtn Tech told me it needed its original struts replaced. Finally bit the bullet in March 2024. They told me, "it will drive like a new car." And it DOES!! Had felt to me like it needed brakes, but Mtn Tech assured me that the weirdness I was feeling while braking was due to worn struts. And they were right. I'm used to taking all advice re car repairs with a big chunk of road salt, but Mountain Tech has been honest and skillful and I'm really glad to be their customer. read more

Told me my car has a bad head gasket, then said they had "there best technician" who specializes in Subarus to look at it. Quoted me over 6000 and asked me to pay them for him looking at the head gasket. The head gasket was perfect no leaks at all. read more

This place is terrible. Took my car there to get new brakes for my daughter's car and paid them $800. I picked it up when done. Brakes still did not work. I took it back and they said, "Actually we didn't fix the brakes at all." They took my money and didn't fix anything. I had to talk them into fixing them. My daughter could have been in a accident really easily. They were very rude. They also gave me a guilt trip that I didn't bring it to them for a diagnostic before buying it. Tried to scare me by saying the engine was a Frankenstien engine made from different parts and wouldn't last long. (It runs great after 20,000+ miles.) read more

Friendly family shop with the kids working there, too. Specializes in Subaru and they appear to have a focus on keeping old subies going. Also they appear to sell old subies, as well. Hands-down one of the most competent and most honest repair shops I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. My 2009 Outback needed a new catalytic converter AND it was nearing 100k miles, which meant a timing belt change, plus who knows what else. Mountain Tech did a thorough assessment, which of course came back super-expensive because it was so exhaustive. My final repairs were expensive, given their scope, but I was treated fairly and the shop spoke honestly to me about which services were truly needed and which could be put off. The car drives like a dream now, and the repairs came in much cheaper than the original estimate, as a few could be bundled to cut down on labor. Once you've got the engine opened up to fix the timing belt, for instance, you can do a lot of other stuff quite quickly, without needing to open it up for those separate tasks. Very honest, very skilled, very reliable. No one likes spending money on repairs, but if you need to, it won't be wasted here. read more

Peter discussed a major repair on the suspension and outlined all of my options. He helped me make a difficult decision to put more money into an older car. However, I believe that I made the best decision due to the cost of newer cars and I think my son is set for the next 10 years. Excellent service from Peter and the team! First time to meet an honest mechanic. Everyone else wanted to take it apart and replaced it for $350-400. I was asked by Peter to bring it in and they will take a look at it and Im glad I did. I was told its normal for it to do that and just need new belt. I made an appointment and it was fixed for less than $100. Im from Kirkland, WA and temporality work at Portland. I will definitely drive here for major preventive maintenance. read more

I generally do a lot of my own, very basic, repair work. All other, I rely on the guys a Mountain Tech. I went in this last week to have them help me install new shocks on the rear. I had tried myself, but wasn't able with the tools I have. I went in with a very limited budget. They agreed to do the work for what I had. It took them over three hours do you some complications with my car, and its very old components. Not only did they fix the issue, they installed the shocks and only charged me the amount I could pay. They really help me out in a pinch! Get group of guys, great family! You don't stay in business for over 20 years by doing the wrong thing! Highly recommend!! read more

Brought in my Impreza for a tune up/to see if anything needed some upkeep. Matt was great at keeping me dialed in through all of the process. Ended up having to spend a bit more than I expected, but there was never any pressure. Matt talked me through all of my options and I actually paid a little less than what was originally quoted. Mountain Tech is a repair and service shop for Subarus only, up on the bluff above downtown Oregon City. My neighbor Mo in Sellwood recommended this place enthusiastically, as the best place around to get your Subaru fixed. Oregon City is a long way from Sellwood, but from just my first visit, I can see why it's worth travelling the distance. The shop is run by a bunch of friendly guys who seem to actually enjoy working on Subarus, and appear to be good at it. Mountain Tech clearly believes in maintaining old Subarus. There's a veritable sea of them, mostly wagons, parked tightly in the lot. Matt, the service writer, told me that my 1991 Loyale's 164,000 miles isn't high for a Subaru; their loaner car has over 400,000 miles on it and runs fine. I asked for an oil change and a new customer assessment, and got that, the usual fluid and tire check, a list of recommended work for the future, and a visit from Lewis, the mechanic who worked on my car. He went over what he found and concluded that the car was in fine shape. I agreed with Lewis that yes, it was a fine car, but told him that unfortunately the 4WD was broke and apparently beyond fixing, because my previous shop had tried to fix it twice. He asked me a few questions, got interested in the problem, ran outside to the car, checked a couple things, found an amazingly simple problem (the air hose that works the 4WD control had become disconnected) and showed it to me as he reconnected it. This fixed the 4WD. All this for a grand total of $33.65. The place is bigger than it looks. Matt says they have six service bays and a large parts warehouse ("all genuine Subaru parts"). But this is not a polished facility. The office looks like part of a neglected, cluttered gas station, and there's no waiting room. People who wait for their cars usually go to a nearby coffee shop, Matt said. During my two hour wait, I walked over to the municipal elevator, took it down to old Oregon City downtown, found breakfast, went back up the elevator, walked around the historic district, then sat in the office's one guest chair. Tri-Met comes very near the shop, so next time, I'll leave the car there all day and use the bus. They also run a Subaru used car lot. There were 13 for sale on the lot when I was there in October, all with a brief mechanical warranty from the shop. If you've got a Subaru, this is a great place to take it. read more

These guys have always told me the truth about my Subaru, even when it cost them potential earnings. The relationship as trusted mechanic means more to them than getting the most out of a customer each time they're in. This is why I only use Mountain Tech Subaru specialists. My experience with them goes back five years, and I'm still driving the Legacy wagon they sold me at a great used price. Thing is, both they and I know that soon it won't be financially wise to keep fixing up this wagon (though they would do it if I wanted), and so I get the straight dope about how much and whether they think it's worth it in the long run. Let me start by saying, I have never reported a bad experience before but I can't let this one slide!! I took my car to Mountain tech Subaru on Monday morning and Peter told me that they would give me a diagnostic on either Monday afternoon or Tuesday which was totally fine:) I called an hour before they closed on Tuesday and they still hadn't done it! Called again on Wednesday and it was still not done. I know things happen in life and I get that!! I called again on Thursday evening and told them I was gonna come get my car because I hadn't heard from them and I wanted to take it elsewhere! I came to pick it up and it was pinned in between 2 cars, like I was gonna come steal my own car!! My hubby and I went inside and waited for Peter to finish his cigarette outside so that we could get my keys. Peter then tells me I owe them 291.00 and says we are only charging u for labor!! 291.00 for a diagnostic??? Im sorry but that is ridiculous!!! I would NOT recommend taking your vehicles to this place! You would be better off taking it to Jiffy Lube!!!! I don't even like Jiffy Lube but I would take my Subaru to them instead of this place!!! read more

Although I'd know of Mt. Tech for a long time & their reputation preceded them, was recommended by ADF (Anderson Design Fabrication) the local company I got my 2" lift from when I needed some wheel bearings repacked. I knew my car (01 Forester) had a few "issues" as it's a 20-year old rig, but since I spend so much time deep in the wilderness, I'm committed to keeping it well-maintained. Called about the wheel bearings and Matt was super personable on the phone & ended up doing a few other jobs at the same time...they worked with me on a great package price for it all. Mostly, I truly felt that owners Matt & Peter had my vehicle's best interest at heart. They showed me the rig, we looked at what they were seeing, were super clear on what needed to be done vs. what's unnecessary dealer quoted work for a 20-year old vehicle that's just different maintenance wise than a 2 year old 35,000 car. This shop did an entire diagnostic and quoted me over $1200.00 when I only asked them to fix my ac and check the brakes. I also told them to call me with the repair estimate for the ac before doing the work. They never called me. I had to call them. They then sent me a text quoting 1200.00 worth of work that I didn't ask them to do. 650.00 for AC O rings? What?! Then they tried to charge me 108.00 for diagnostic work I didn't ask for or authorize or was told about. Note on the invoice they called it a " a courtesy diagnostic" They are not to be trusted. I was really stressed out with trying to find a new car. I've known Matt @ Mountain Tech for years, so I finally decided to ask him for help. He sold me the CUTEST, most wonderful little Impreza, fondly named Marshmallow. They did a ton of engine work on it prior to my purchase, and have fixed a few minor rattles since with no questions asked. They even threw in a free car wash and oil change! all of my subarus have gone to this shop for the past 8 years and i have yet to have a negative experience. most recently i went to mt. tech looking for an inexpensive extra wagon and they were able to take a non-running legacy and put a great running used engine back into it, completely reseal it, do a timing belt job w/ everything else that goes with it AND were even nice enough to replace a bumper for me that had peeling paint and sell me what has been a wonderful car for the price i was looking to pay. whenever i have a DIY project i can always run over to mt. tech and pick up a used part and have always been given any needed advice to tackle the job as well. if you own a subaru and it is feeling under the weather, you can rest assured if you take it to this shop the job will be done correctly the first time and always with genuine subaru parts. read more

I've been dealing with these guys for more than 20 years. My experience with them makes it worthwhile for me to drive the 6 hours from Gold Beach to Oregon City. I just made that trip to buy my 8th car from them. They make sure the cars are dependable and in good shape when you buy. If a problem cones up, they stand behind the sale. I had purchased a used 2002 Subaru Outback from a private party, only drove it for about 7 months (it had 130k miles on it) before it started having mechanical issues. I've always heard good things about this shop so I decided to take my outback there. After they checked my car out it basically needed a motor rebuild. This shop had my car done sooner then expected, came in under the original estimate and staff has been amazing and so helpful!! My husband and I have gone to Mountain Tech for over twenty years when Jerry , the dad, started the business. Lately however, we have been disappointed on several points. Mountain Tech still does excellent work but the prices are ridiculously expensive and the family atmosphere has disappeared. I needed to get my head gaskets done on my car and was given a quote that was $1000 higher than from another Subaru specialist. Before when we would go there, they treated you like family. Now, it just seems that they are just concerned about the money. I received the exact same quote from them as from a dealership and the dealership was going to give me a rental car for free. I would have to pay for one with Mountaintech. I'm afraid they have lost some long time customers. read more

buyers beware: this place is a joke. after speaking to peter for two weeks, we drove all the way from idaho to purchase a car for my son. when we got there around 1:30 pm, peter told us he could not sell us the car, because we were late for our appointment in the morning. what appointment, why would we make an appointment for the morning, when it took us six hours to drive from idaho to portland. peter has no customer service skills what so ever, no respect either. when i asked for the owners name, he was not willing to give me the information. peter i will be contacting the owner and letting him know how you treated us. i give them a thumbs down. This company is advertising vehicles for sale on Facebook Market Place. They are using a bait and switch system to get consumers to come into their dealership. We spoke to Peter, the manager for over two weeks regarding a 1997 Subaru they had advertised on market place. I personally called the shop twice to find out what the price was for the vehicle, as we were driving all the way from Idaho to Portland. I asked for a call back regarding the vehicle and Peter never returned my calls. I called Peter again on Friday, December 21, 2018, to confirm that they would be open in the afternoon, as we were driving well over 6.5 hours to get to their dealership. Peter confirmed the price of the vehicle, and indicated that I might want to bring an additional $250 dollars for licensing. We left our house at 7:00 am and arrived at the dealership at 1:00 pm. When we went to purchase the vehicle, Peter stated that they could not sell us the vehicle because we missed our morning appointment. What appointment? We never made an appointment, why would we make a morning appointment when we had to drive over 6.5 hours to get to their dealership. Peter then stated that for an additional $1,500, they would sell us the car, then Peter went on to tell us that they had other vehicles on the lot at a lower price we could purchase, since we had been misquoted the price for the 1997 Subaru What? That was not the price that we were quoted. Not only did they falsely advertise the vehicle for sale on Facebook, they knowingly knew they were not going to sale the vehicle for the price they originally quoted us. This company is using advertising practices and marketing to a younger generation and then baiting them to get them into their dealership, and then raising the prices to get more money off of the potential buyers, or using the old Bait and switch as a sales tactic to trick the consumers into buying something other than an advertised item. read more

I had been to Mt. Tech about 10 years ago, and did not have a very good experience. I paid for some coolent hoses to be replaced and a week later one blew a hole, because it had never been replaced. They initially tried to charge me for it, until I produced the receipt from before. So I did not return to Mt. Tech until recently, because a friend was working there, and insisted they had improved. But then when some work needed done on the car, there was a dispute over replacing some already replaced parts, and partly because my friend intervened, he ended up losing his job after working there for about 11 years.
