My cars have been serviced here for decades, and my latest visit is a good example of why. I have a 2018 F-150 with fairly low miles (60K) that failed a DEQ test. I immediately drove to First Choice to ask their advice. Eric dropped what he was doing, and hooked up a diagnostic tool to the truck. It showed an oxygen sensor error. Right then and there, he could have said make an appointment; you need a new one. Instead, he said that it was rare for them to fail. He cleared the error code from the truck, and told me to drive it for an hour or so, and go get it tested again. I followed his advice, and it worked! First Choice did not charge me a penny, and the solution was simple, straight forward, and took little time. I've had other instances where these guys have really bailed me out over the years, and I won't have my vehicles serviced anywhere else. My wife got the oil changed on my car today and I had thrown an air filter and cabin air filter in the trunk. I easily could've replaced the cabin air filter in 30 seconds, but figured it would take them 30 seconds and they already have the hood up. They charged her $48 to replace it even though we provided it. When I called and spoke to Nick he said it costs labor because you have to go through the glove box on most vehicles. I agree most you do but not my car it is simply under the hood and you lift a plastic cover off. Even on vehicles that you have to go through the glove box it takes 2 minutes. Clearly a horrible dishonest way to tack onto a bill. We have been taking our cars here for years and never will again. read more

I came in to have my 2011 Honda Pilot inspected after a recent vehicle purchase. I knew there were issues with the shocks, struts, etc., but really just wanted an idea of how the car looks overall. The person on the phone quoted me $60 for the inspection and about 30-45 minutes of time. I showed up, dropped off my keys, made some phone calls, and they were done in about the time they said. They created a detailed list of some of the items that needed replacing with quotes for the parts and labor. My car failed the DEQ emissions test yesterday. The very nice man at the station said, "I can't really tell you what you need to get fixed, but maybe [wink wink] it's the oxygen sensor." He hands me a list of "Recognized Automotive Repair Shops," and since I don't know where to go, as I just moved here, I start calling the list. Same Day Auto Service only does Japanese cars, so off we go to 1st Choice, around 9:30 am, as they can get me in that day. I drop my car off, the guy gets my info, and I tell him what Jiffy Lube (see Jiffy Lube at 11965 SE 82nd review, they suck) said was wrong with my car. He said he would check that nonsense out, but he is going to make sure my car passes and that's what is most important. I call around 3pm and John tells me that my oxygen sensor needs to be replaced. He tells me to ignore the stuff Jiffy Lube said, it wont make a difference for my car passing and neither the PVC whatever valve or radiator cap need to be replaced anyway. Screw you, Jiffy Lube. He'll have the car ready at 5pm. I go at 5pm to get it, and it's ready, it works, the check engine light is off (it went on and off for months, and every time it would go back off I'd think my car healed itself and I didn't need to take it in. Wishful thinking at it's most moronic), and yay, I passed the DEQ test today! I didn't feel ripped off, the work cost was average, and the staff were nice and helpful. My brother in law is giving me his car in a few months, and I told John that, and he didn't push me to do anything other than what was needed to pass the DEQ. He mentioned some service work that could be done to help the car run better, but said if I wasn't going to drive it much longer, don't bother. Very cool. read more

I bought a Groupon for a routine oil change and chose this location based on proximity to my boyfriend's house. I was able to make a same day appointment, brought my car in, redeemed my Groupon, then sat down and waited. Not very long at all. The gentleman I spoke with was very direct, and I like that. This is not the kind of place where I feel like being BS'd around and pressured into paying for extras. I usually dread taking my car in for maintenance because I'm not very knowledgeable about cars. Let me explain why I trust this company. Finding a great auto repair company can be challenging when you move from one place to another, for me we moved from Ohio to Oregon and my first couple places I used for fixing my cars left a lot to be desired. A previously unmentioned company replaced the exhaust muffler system on my wife's Nissan Sentra SE and did about $800 worth of work. Less then a week later I was having problems with the vehicle and was told it needed a new catalytic converter. I don't know how you actually install something like a complete exhaust system and not notice that another part involved in that particular area needs replaced or not, but I honestly felt like I was ripped off by this previous company. I ended up taking the same car to 1st Choice Auto. John, the manager/owner was up front with me on the initial repair and advised me that given the age of my car and mileage he figured it was time to look for a new car. He wouldn't bad mouth the previous company, though he did say he thought they should have noticed the glaring need for the catalytic converter in the first place, but I was impressed that given the opportunity, he chose to take the 'high road' and not bad mouth an obvious competitor. He could have strung me along and followed exactly the same path that the previous company did but instead he chose to be an honest person, despite not being able to take more money out of my pocket with another costly repair. When I agreed with him about his advice and went to pay, he told me to not worry about it. I knew then that I had found a great place to work on my car. Since that transition in 2010, unless it was something 1st Choice wasn't able to fix themselves, John and his team at 1st Choice have been the only company that works on my cars. My only complaint is I wish I would have brought my car to them first! I suppose though then I wouldn't know just how awesome they are. A couple years ago, I had an Acura TL-S that was showing an error light on the dash. After looking at all the options and running thru the list of possible issues to cause this light to appear, it turned out that the light indicated I needed to replace the entire upper half the engine, as the lights code indicated that oil was probably leaking into the engine casing and causing the entire engine to be damaged. He advised me again to probably consider not fixing the car, since a new top half of an engine would set me back at least $2000. But after talking about the repair, he asked me to leave it another day and asked to check a few more things to make sure. I was already planning on replacing the car, but since the car was for the most part extremely clean, he told me he'd look at some other parts to see if I could salvage anything. The next day he told me the sensor itself that monitors the engine was actually the culprit. So instead of a costly repair as well as having to buy a replacement vehicle, I ended up only needing to replace a $40 sensor. That is how you take care of a customer. When I bought a replacement for the Acura last November, my first stop with my new Lexus was to have John's mechanics, this time Brandon, take a look at the vehicle and see what they thought. When I was told the car was in good shape at least on a quick look thru, upon asking them how much I owed them I was told that there was no charge. In the past, when I have had some small error or concern, they have always been courteous and downright kind, something of a rarity these days in the auto repair industry. If the diagnostic was minimal, or didn't require much time to investigate, much of the time they don't even charge me for their time. I cannot guarantee that you will have the same benefit, as I have been a long standing customer and have paid them for many other repairs as was needed among the five vehicles I've owned since finding them in 2010, but I think they are good people and honestly believe in being honest and having integrity. I do not think you will be disappointed in their service, their knowledge, or their ability to provide a proper repair to your vehicle. Just today, my mother noticed her Kia Sorrento had a tire warning light. When she went by on her way home and asked First Choice if they could take a look at it, they found she had a large screw stuck in the tire. They refused to take any money from her since it only took them a few minutes. Again, I cannot say if they do this for everyone, and maybe again this is a benefit because we have spent a good deal of money in the past for repairs for them, but they have always taken care of my family, and I honestly believe they're caring about their customers and have something that few businesses in this day and age seem to have, integrity. You will not be disappointed if you take your car here! If you do have a complaint, it will be that you will wish you had found them sooner! read more

I am a conscientious owner of an older car, one that I am basically just trying to milk the most miles I safely can from until such time as it becomes a money pit and is sold. Upon speaking with John the first time I took my car in and explaining my approach to owning this car, he has been very respectful of this, and does not ever seek to upsell me - he just recommends what is needed and that's it. I do miss the Saturday hours, but hey, I can understand why a shop would have difficulty with supplies, staffing, etc. on Saturdays. I needed a sound fixed in my car. I called at 11am on a Friday. I asked to bring the car in at 1pm. They said no problem. They called a few minutes after I left, just brakes, $195. I said go ahead. A few hours later, all fixed. They didn't up sell me or try anything else. They reported 40% on front brakes too. Could have told me they needed work, they didn't. I have made this my go-to car repair and oil change place to keep my elderly Honda happy. They even worked without appointment on my sister's '98 Toyota 4-Runner, which ran into a major tire and axle problem, and had her back on the road in less than 24 hours. The spacious waiting room (complete with leather sofas, good Keurig coffee, at least 2 flat screens, and a shared computer area) is alone worth a trip here. This shop is awesome. I was referred to these guys from relatives who live in Clackamas who have been going here for years. I just got SO tired of taking my Honda cars to the dealerships who constantly want to to things I just feel are not necessary. My daughters car is a 2001 Honda Accord with 225,000 miles on it. I bought it for $3000 3 years ago. It starting making noises and the check engine light came on. I went.. Oh no.. here we go with a massive expense. Nick at the shop was friendly, helpful, and direct about everything. They diagnosed a bad converter, discussed two tires that were very bad, and gave me options about what to do. They were upfront, honest, and I completely trusted their judgment. There was no pushy "you better do this" type attitude nor was there any scare tactics about how the car would fall apart if we didn't spend $1000 immediately. They completed all work in hours and even took the time to show me the bad part, what it does, and how it was broken. They also discussed prior work and didn't point fingers or throw anyone under the bus although I already knew the dealerships had not done a very good job. I highly recommend this shop. Most of us are not too knowledgeable about car repairs and we just want honest assessments about what might be wrong, what might be needed, and options about what to do.
