Deeply Unsafe, Disorganized Experience at Wood Violet (Sunshine Behavioral Health)…read moreMy stay at Wood Violet Recovery, part of Sunshine Behavioral Health, was the most disorganized and unsafe mental health experience I've had. Medications were lost multiple times, not secured properly, and undocumented from day 1--refused until 10pm despite arrival at 11am. No 15-minute checks during first 72 hours as promised. Staff sarcastically pushed nicotine despite my quit attempt. Depression rated 9/10 got zero intervention; no one-on-one therapy in 6 days. Groups were unstructured and unsafe (no response to suicide talk), led by unlicensed facilitators. Providers dismissed my pharmacogenetic tests, allergy, and OCD history; one laughed about side effects, saying "just take it at night." I left feeling ignored, on edge, and worse off. Avoid Wood Violet and Sunshine facilities--seek anywhere else for competent care. CEO Chad Daugherty's leadership has allowed this systemic disorganization across the brand to continue.

Someone close to me entered Wood Violet's Mental Health Residential Program in crisis, expecting a…read moresafe, structured environment based on its advertised services: daily DBT-based group therapy, regular individual therapy, psychiatric medication management, and consistent safety monitoring. Their six-day stay, ending in self-discharge due to inadequate care, fell far short of those promises. Medication failures started day one. They checked in at 11:00 AM Wednesday but saw no provider. At 9:00 PM, staff withheld essential meds without approval; a 10:00 PM call revealed the meds were misplaced. Supplements went missing twice more. Other residents reported similar issues, with no reliable med list for nurses--who often asked the patient for their own regimen and dosages. Online portal errors persisted even after leadership "corrections." No individual therapy sessions occurred. Group therapy lacked DBT structure: skills taught inconsistently, facilitators unprepared for high-risk talks like unmoderated suicide discussions. A promised "new curriculum" was just DVDs and repetitive off-topic content. Safety checks failed--15-minute monitoring in the first 72 hours never happened, despite severe anxiety and depression. Staff dismissed concerns: "just feel shitty for a week" for missing meds; "you backed them into a corner" for an allergy disclosure. The environment mismatched marketing: videos showed a peaceful pool (reconfirmed pre-check-in), but it was drained. Their room smelled moldy. Escalated issues got assurances but no change: contradicting providers, unavailable therapists, missed follow-ups. At $700+/day, this didn't justify the cost. Wood Violet cannot be recommended based on this experience.

The facility needs some cleaning up and the food was rough but all in all I was so blessed to have had the opportunity to come here to get better. Special shout out to Em, my case manager, and Dr. G. You guys save lives.

If I could give this place a zero, I would. Let's see where to start...Meghann (yes, with two n's)…read morethe "therapist" is unprofessional, she talks about all the other therapists and how badly corporate is run. I never got any time with her and when I did her responses were all of, "Yeah" "I agree" "Good idea" - she is worthless, you'll get better feedback from an inanimate object. She had the chance to deescalate a situation between an abusive BHT (male, Hispanic Jamie) and myself and she did the exact opposite. The BHT was historically known as aggressive, power tripping, women hating, hostile and threatening towards the clients and one particular day he was all in my face accusing me of something that I didn't even do, and I spoke back to him exactly the way he was speaking to me. Least to say I voluntarily discharged early because she came at me in an accusing manner, stripped me of my offsite pass and did not want to hear my side of the situation nor investigate this BHT. I cancelled all my additional services with PLR because of this incident, I'll give my money to an agency with integrity. The clinical person Kari is worthless too - leaned on her to complete admin work that was never done, the left doesn't know what the right hand is doing there. The photos depicted on their website look nothing like the real thing, everything is falling apart, dirty and poorly maintained, see pics of my room below. Nursing was known to give clients the wrong medications, as a result some clients were falling asleep at the beginning of the day. The food is disgusting, void of any nutritional value although Nursing and their educational content are completely inconsistent. During the Thanksgiving holiday they had no staff present and were subjected to doing arts and crafts all week, it was a joke, like we were in 6th grade. I was supposed to have therapy twice a week, PLR was short-staffed in addition to being money hungry, they were maxed out with patients and I never received therapy of any kind, CBT or EMDR. I will be taking this up and disputing my final balance with Cigna. Most of the clinicians were good but some (Rob/Cindy) were known to talk openly in class about certain groups of people being improperly wired, telling patients they would relapse, addressing gay people them as f*gs, continuous cursing and derogatory language often offending different groups of people. Do not send your loved ones here! It is a poorly run facility that should be audited more often and investigated.

IT'S A YES. JUST GO…read more Unfortunately, an issue at home meant my stay ended early - there was a tragic miscommunication amongst staff the day before as well, which they handled with the utmost integrity. It was certainly the only snafu in my experience, and it rightfully belongs in the "sh*t happens" category. Staff had the humility and courage to own the mistake, and that willingness alone was enough to know that I had come to a place full of people who are truly the real deal when it comes to mental health. I left because I had to - not because I wanted to. In fact, I was planning on extending 30 days to complete their PHP, but life called me back home. Make no mistake - were it not for having to leave to handle something horrific back home (I'm from the other side of the country), I would still be there. I woke up this morning aching to go back to the safety, the compassion, the grace, and the mercy of Peaks. The staff are beyond wonderful. They sat with me through the darkest day of my life, and did nothing but love me. I can't describe how supported I felt. I could literally *feel* the empathy of the clinicians, nurses, and medical providers who sat with me and held space through the worst two panic attacks I've ever had. My housemates and I, and especially my roommate, wove a web of support and belonging I had never experienced. (Prior to admission, I literally could not get out of bed or do anything remotely social - I was even finding it hard to leave the house). I had the BEST time being part of a community, which gave me new confidence, and reassurance that I could get back into the game of life. I'm a therapist myself and I would 100% recommend Peaks as a committed, compassionate, caring healing space of the very highest quality. These people have their sh*t together. I have never encountered a place full of people who truly WANT to be there for you. Imagine being asked multiple times per day by staff if there is anything you need to feel supported. Being surrounded by people who know and care whether you've eaten that day, how you slept last night, and whether you need anything else to feel safe was pretty mind-boggling. I would trust Peaks to treat my nearest and dearest with zero hesitation. It will be the only mental health treatment center to which I refer my clients. Thank God for Peaks. Certainly I will forget to name some of the incredible staff, but Faith, Kinnley, Clint, Kara, Holly, Angela, Dr. Nichols, Sasha, JUDY, Cindy, Kyle, Pema, Julia, Chef, Taylor, Tara, Logan (x2), Heather, Eric, Marissa, the various therapists who led group, Bobby, Max in admissions, and Rachel - thank you for giving me a home, and at long last, an accurate mirror. Thank you also for tolerating my dirty blue hair and my massive disco fruit snuggie. I miss everyone already. Although I only got to stay for 10(ish) of the 30 days I had planned, the changes in me are real. I came into Peaks as a 47 year-old adult child, and left as a grown-up. Thank you, Peaks, for turning me back into me. Thank you for restoring my dignity. I will carry a piece of you in my heart always with immense gratitude. There is something spiritual in the particles and energy at this place that truly brought me back to life.

When I was 63, upon retiring after 40+ years in commercial construction, my first splurge was not on a grand vacation or a big house project, both activities my wife and I often discussed and planned, but was focused on eradicating the increasing pain in my lower back and hips, which sadly made those other dreams seem unattractive and increasingly unobtainable. So my first retirement "project" was a series of stem cell and PRP treatments over several months; although it did help, the relief obtained wasn't to the level that I still hoped was possible, and seemed necessary to regain my confidence in taking on high-level physical activities. So I next went for the total hip replacement, tackling the worst side first; thankfully it did take care of that hip's pain... but my back pain was still nagging me, and the hip surgery had so greatly reduced my lower-body strength that I'd not regained much enthusiasm for those other dreamed-for activities. What finally seemed to stem the tide, thankfully, came from almost off-handed recommendations from both providers: "you should find a good physical therapist". I was skeptical, having tried a few PT providers when my back first started really hurting 10+ years prior... but I'd only seen limited improvements. I decided to give PT one more shot, however, because I'd recently heard such good things about Take Charge Physical Therapy from a long-time friend who had suffered from debilitating back and neck pain for most of her adult life, finally obtaining relief from their practice. So I started with Take Charge in August 2022, and to my surprise, started to see improvement in both pain reduction and returning strength/function of my lower body, even within a few months, which of course motivated me to continue. Soon it became obvious that Katya's PT treatments would be the primary driver in my steady return to where I was enjoying my ranch work and travel again, regaining the confidence and capacity that I used to take for granted when I was younger. My wife I are now enjoying our travel dreams, and I'm doing ranch projects I've been hesitant to tackle for years. Looking back, I'm convinced that most of my progress to healing has been due to Katya's care at Take Charge, even to the point that I think I may have even obtained this level of success without the stem/PRP and the hip replacement... or at least I'm now convinced that I won't need to replace the other hip. And currently, although I'm at a point of self-sustaining care, I still look forward to Katya's treatments, not only because of her role in addressing those little surprises that show up in the aging process, but also because of her depth of knowledge in anything related to muscles, tendons, and bones (to be expected from a doctorate of physical therapy from CU Anschutz), and so many other facets of overall healthily living. For any of my friends who seriously want to reduced nagging muscle pain and to address their overall health, I can't recommend Katya enough.

About the only medication that seems to lower the pain enough to sleep well is 100 mg of Tramadol before bed. For the first time in years, I am able to sleep and walk around without pain medication. I simply cannot recommend her enough.
