First when you walk into the Mountain Man shop you are NOT going to see $10 souvenir t-shirts or the smell of incest burning. If a tacky souvenir shop is for you then this is not the place. I been going to the Mountain Man shop when visiting my deceased father living in Colorado Springs since the 70's. Actually this store in one of the highlights of my trip. These guys are true Mountain Men and give you the freedom to browse their store and have always answered any questions I may have. Over the years I have purchase several accessories for my TC Renegade muzzleloader and hard to find frontier clothing. I enjoy looking around at all the merchandise they offer. Unfortunately I am unable to visit Colorado as much I did in the past currently living in Florida, I do enjoy my memories of my times visiting this wonderful shop. read more

Wonderful service and cool items from a bygone era. Great selection of frontier knives, black powder rifles, period clothing and books. Had an excellent conversation with Kurt and he pointed my son amd I to some fun value items. If you need a pattern for sewing western frontier clothing they have it as well. read more

I live out of state and visit family in Monument a few times a year. Anytime I am able to visit Manitou Springs I make it a point to stop in to this store. I bought my first black powder revolver here a few years back and the clerk was helpful in getting me everything I would need to get started. On my last visit I was able to stop in and purchased everything I'd need to construct my own knife. I'm no master knife craftsman, but I had a great time assembling my knife and I love it! This store really takes you back in time and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting! read more

This shop gives you everything the chains can't give you! The history of this wonderful establishment is only one of the things that makes it special. The passion and knowledge of the staff is something you cannot find either. If you have a passion for supporting local businesses then this is a place you need to stop. We even have family that lives out of town that always makes a point of shopping here whenever they are in town. Shops come and go in Manitou Springs and the fact that The Mountain Man has been owned by the same family for almost 50 years must mean they are doing something right! read more

The Mountain Man is a small, family run business. We do not compete with large corporate sporting goods stores or Amazon. When you come to The Mountain Man and show an interest in muzzleloading, you're going to be able to talk with someone who knows what they are talking about and will make sure you have what you need to safely operate your new gun. Just because you found your gun cheaper somewhere online does not justify a return of your merchandise - we don't price match as we are a small, family run business. We opened our doors in 1974 and will celebrate our 50th anniversary next year. We certainly didn't make it this far operating in the manner you describe. All of your merchandise has been ready for pick up since you left it. I personally instructed Ron to take it off the wall and keep it together, because you paid for it. read more

I love this place and have bought many things here over the last 15+ years. All have been great quality! The owner and the counter staff have always been friendly, helpful and have been very happy to answer questions. I have needed to figure a few projects out and they have always given me great ideas on how to do things when I have an idea but am not sure how to execute them. They have so many unusual and interesting things there is always something that will catch your fancy. This is a also a small business so helping support them is an added bonus. read more

I have been going to Mountain Man for several years, and have always been treated well. They have always been willing to share knowledge and won't sell you stuff you don't need. Anyway, I broke the lock on my T/C during elk season. I took the lock in, they had the part that I needed, helped me replace it, and I was in business in 10 minutes. Great store. Just got a new black powder pistol and went in to get supplies. They were super helpful and knowledgeable and helped me get every thing I needed. I later went back in with questions and they took the time to help answer the questions and share their knowledge. I have been going to the Mountain Man shop in Manitou Springs for years. The shop caters to the living historian, muzzleloader enthusiast, and collectors for rendezvous/fur trade equipment. I am not sure why those who had a bad experience at this shop but if you just speak to those who are in the shop and ask questions, they are more than willing to meet your needs. I just spoke to the person who runs the store at Ft. Lupton a couple of weeks ago and has a lot of experience to assist anyone who is wanting to get into muzzeloading shooting or just just spend some time talking about history. I have been going to Manitou Springs since '71 and The Mountain Man since it opened. I have great affection for both. In the early days the people in this store were friendly, helpful and just nice folks. Sadly, now, they act like they are doing you a favor to talk to you. I keep going there every time I visit Manitou Springs just hoping that things would have changed but they haven't. I love to go there and look but I haven't bought anything there for years because of the rudeness of the staff. Honestly, I'm not sure how they are still in business. Ever the optimist, I hope it will change because I'd love to buy another Navy 36 there sometime. read more

I have to admit that some of these reviews made me hesitate to call Mountain Man, but I am glad I did. I have an old knife that needed a couple of parts. I called them and asked them if they did repairs. They told me, "We don't do repairs but what are you trying to fix?" I told him the problem, and he told me "Bring the knife in, I think we have the parts you need." So I drove in to Manitou, brought my knife and in less than 5 minutes I was out the door with everything I needed. They were EXTREMELY helpful and friendly. read more

The Mountain Man Store has always been very polite and good to me and other Muzzle Loader Shooters in the area. Nobody is perfect and as any tiny little not-franchise store they are not perfect. But, that is to be expected, they are not a huge McCorporation. They have the rare to find Shooting supplies and the staff is polite and professional. They have a GOOD AMOUNT of inventory. Sure, there are some shortages from here-n-there but they do the best they can being a Mom-n-Pop kinda store. Good folks that don't deserve a bad reputation at all. GOOD PEOPLE. read more

Leave your men there and go shop manitou on your own. Somehow, even though this store seems tiny, they'll be fine there for hours. I'm still not sure how/why but 3 men and one boy child were so happy there we had to drag them out after 2 hours. read more

To counter Jessica's review (which is entirely true I'm sure). This store is definitely not about customer service, but more for customers who service if that makes any sense. This store is dedicated to the muzzle loader and knife making enthusiast. If you WANT to make custom knives this is the place for you. They sell pre-cut steel of all shapes and sizes with a multitude of handle options that allows you to do it your own. I do not believe that they do it themselves. They will however sell you all the parts necessary. I have never walked into this store and been asked if I need any help. I'm not even sure if anyone works here. I have no doubt that Jessica is right in saying that it was a terrible experience. If you ask me, mom and pop have gotten a little senile. Don't expect much help but get what you need and bounce. read more

The owner of the store (assuming-older gentleman.) was terribly rude and unprofessional. He is a very unwelcoming man and made not only my group but the group near us leave. We literally stood outside the store and conversed with strangers on how terrible he was. Not even worth walking in with such a nasty attitude. I personally was in the store in January 2014 and found the woman and a gentleman named Chris very nice and helpful. I have shopped at the Mountain Man store too many times to remember, and given Gift cards to friends any family, because it is the ONLY store that carries a good many of the items needed by folks interested in Black-powder, Muzzle-loaders and Re-enacting. The Mountain Man store is a store for people who know what they want. Jessica, There are stores where you can walk in and have sales people hover around you constantly waiting on you hand and foot, but those stores will NEVER see me twice, nor do I think they will see many of the folks that enjoy The MM Store. One possible reason may be that those people (like myself) prefer to be as self reliant as possible. We all appreciate different things, I (for one) am glad there are stores like The Mountain Man. read more

We love Manitou and taking friends there but we will be skipping this joke of a store. The guy running the place couldn't have been ruder or more demeaning. I went in here to buy some beads, and was amazed at the selection. They have antique trading beads that are BEAUTIFUL and rare--ones I haven't seen in forever (as a bead collector). It's hard finding places with old beads, so this store is a new treasure of mine! The man and woman working were very helpful and patient with me looking through all the beads. read more

I visit this shop every time I'm in the Springs (my son liver there) and the proprietor is a pleasant person and NOT pushy to sell his goods. He'll answer any questions you have and has what you need or can get it from some place. The shop is totally interesting as a museum and a place to find a new manly hobby.
