A steep, rocky mountain slope with a few hikers visible, under a partly cloudy sky, in a high-altitude outdoor setting.

8/23/2023 the 10-11 mile drive on the dirt road is a little rough. The last mile or so especially. The first section was just grated and bumpy. Saw a moose and her baby crossing the road on the way in be sure you SLOW DOWN on this road and dont fly on it. Wildlife does live here. Arrived at 605 am. Only a few cars in the lot but there was a long line of cars following me driving in. There is no bathroom and no trash cans at the parking lot. Be sure to go to the bathroom BEFORE you arrive and if you need to go on the trail or at the parking be sure to bring a baggie with you so you can put your TOILET PAPER IN THE BAGGIE! Do not leave your toilet paper in the bushes! Gross! and other people come here to enjoy! We dont want to see that! and wildlife lives here. Be respectful of th space and pack out what you pack in. If you may need to go #2 they sell wag bags at REI for under $3. This is a very secure way for you to go to bathroom and then pack it out. This would be ideal to carry in your packs just in case. Again be respectful of the space. Trail is on an incline from the get-go. It is rocky. I would personally have the all trails map downloaded and also pictures from 14ers.com downloaded. It is not totally clearly laidout as to which is the right way to go and could be easy to get off the trail. There is one section of the ridge that is a little narrow and could make someone scared of heights nervous. Put your pole on the side closest to the ledge though. At no time did anyone in our group feel unsafe on this. For most part the ridge is plenty wide. We could not find a geological marker at the top. Trail is dry and in summer conditions. Thankful it was a non windy day and the sun was shining! Bring poles for the way down. The scree definitely is loose and slides around. We had a couple of people slip in our group even with their poles.

Scenic view from Mount Sherman with rocky foreground, mountain valleys, and a cloudy sky overhead.

My first 14-er, and I think it was a good one to start with. The drive from Denver took about 2-2.5 hours, a good chunk of which was spent on a very rocky dirt road. Thank goodness we were in a rented SUV with relatively high clearance; definitely would not take my own sedan. Of note, there's no bathroom so make sure you're prepared after that long and bumpy road. There's no real signage marking the trailhead or trails, but we figured we'd just get out where the other few cars were parked. Parking was very easy on a Friday morning in August. The hike itself was beautiful and very scenic. Pretty tough in the middle portion of it, with some pretty steep inclines. But if you take it slow and steady, you'll make it. There were also lots of false summits, which was a little disheartening but at least the view was spectacular the entire time. Took us about 3.5-4 hours to complete the whole hike (which is about 5 miles round trip). Would highly recommend everything except the drive on that rough rocky road.

This was my wife and I's first Colorado 14er. It was a really nice warm up and re-introduction to 14ers. I loved the 360 degree views from the top. As well as the wild flowers and scenery along the way. This is a nice hike, and I would recommend it!

Rich Creek Trailhead - Rich Creek Trail (5/27/23)

Rich Creek Trailhead

Rich Creek Trail is a moderate hike in the Buffalo Peak Wilderness near the town of Fairplay. This…read moreparticular trail is on the outskirts of the Weston Pass Campground, with the small trailhead parking lot just prior. A fairly simple out and back trail it may be, however the majority of the trail sits alongside Rich Creek. So for the duration of the hike you hear the wonderful sounds of the rushing creek. Absolutely splendid! With all the rain we've gotten this season, it's no surprise that nature is putting on a show earlier than normal. The abundant evergreens are looking more like summer than mid spring. The vibrant trees definitely added an extra pop of color during the hike and I certainly wasn't complaining. The trail is well marked, and at one point you will have to cross the creek. Be prepared to add some extra wood to the makeshift bridge, because it was on its last leg as I crossed. Tread lightly. I did see some stunning bluebirds during my time out here. Otherwise no major wildlife to be found. 5.5 miles roundtrip. 1,161 ft. elevation gain. 2.5 hours total. For a Memorial Day Weekend hike, I was very content with this trail. I bet this trail is even more beautiful in the Fall. Saw about 9 or 10 people the whole time. Parking lot has 7-8 spots, so if you're going on a Summer weekend it might fill up. Hiking season has begun!

Fishing, birding, plenty of Wildlife....even spotted a few beavers near a small lake. Sure the unpaved path in will beat up your car...but it is worth it. Highly recommended for an easy 2-3 day backpacking excursion.

Usually, you can walk two abreast and the river crossings are not hard. Lots of nice campsites every mile or so, visible right next to the trail. Once you get away from the trailhead, firewood is plentiful. Some camp sites are right next to water, so you can filter it and you're good. Others, you may have to carry water there. We did have some wet weather, which wasn't bad if you have good raincoats. Naturally, if you go to higher elevations, the rain comes down as snow, or hail, even in June. If you're just doing Goose Creek, within the first 7-8 miles, it's super easy to follow. However, good maps are available for free from the USGS web site. We also had a good map for Lost Creek from Amazon. Not too hard to get to the trail head, although you do have to drive about 15 miles of windy dirt road. It takes about 45 minutes for that part, especially if you have to back up to let someone go the other way on one of the single lane parts.

When Spring hits Colorado snow is most likely still in the mountains... but towards the end of…read morespring there is one wilderness that most locals know will most likely NOT have snow, and that is why the Lost Creek Wilderness becomes so popular. People want out of their homes and into the mountains and they want it now, so they all go. This is a great trail to either take a short hike on or a trek. I did a one night day/trek and saw my first bear in person! I am still so excited to this day that I tell people about seeing my first bear in person. He saw us first and was walking away from us, but I was scared the rest of the trek. We found the most amazing camp site under these beautiful grove of Aspens and by a nearby running river. At that particular time, we were allowed to have fires, so we made a nice controlled fire, had an amazing dinner of burritos and rice and enjoyed ourselves as the night grew cooler. You better bet your booty that we hung all of our food, wrappers, and trash in a high high tree, far, far away from our tents... You are not a true hiker if you don't! Make sure to see the shaft house.. The short mile hike will grant you awesome sites of gigantic boulders and rock formations... A sure different view then the rest of the hike. * Star one for my first bear sighting ** Raise your hands tall or talk low star two is for learning what to do if a bear approaches you talk that lasted a mile *** Wow this is old star three is for the old not-in-use shafthouses that are a perfect short trek off of the main trail **** Fire fire star four is for the first mile which shows you in person how a much a forest fire rips apart a wilderness... But the star is for the new growth... I am so cheesy! 239.

If you need to go to bathroom pop over to elbert or one of the bathrooms along the road/way to get to the trailhead. Otherwise be sure to plan on packing out what you pack in. Trail is actually 14.5 miles per 14ers.com. So be prepared that this is longer than what all trails states. This is the standard route for this peak. This trail is well maintained and in good shape. Trail is currently in summer conditions. Basically this is just a REALLY LONG trail with a lot of elevation gain. There is nothing technical about it. When you get to the ridge there is still a pretty well defined trail. You will have to step over some rocks but nothing bad. The inclining meadow leading up to the ridge though seems to go on forever! Bring plenty of water, food, O2, and be prepared. If you are bringing your dogs. Pack out their poop bags! Also keep them on a leash! Saw pica, marmots and some birds i had not seen before. No goats though. I did this in 6 hours total hiking time but was moving at a fairly fast clip.

We started at the Leadville Hatchery and the weather looked gorgeous...and then it didn't, Lack of any trail made matters shall we say a tad more difficult. Did not summit but did not die...win win??? Will do in the summer when sanity will prevail.
