I'm writing a review of a mountain again. I am pretty amused by the idea of reviewing a mountain. I don't really have much else to do right now anyway.
This is a fairly easy but very long 14er climb to the second highest peak in Colorado. The climb (literally, climb) up the last few hundred feet was probably the most challenging part. I went in from what's called Horn Fork Basin and it's not a day hike unless you're into high-speed high-altitude jogging. So I made a short vacation out of it instead.
The picture that is my primary Yelp photo right now is actually a picture of me howling at the moon with Mount Harvard in the background, but it's daytime so I guess I was howling at the sun. That was a good day. The picture was taken from the North side, which is close to Missouri Basin, whereas the recommended route to climb Mt Harvard is actually an approach from the south. So don't be disappointed if it doesn't look like it did in the photo, you have to go around to the other side for that view of it. Regardless, it's a nice looking chunk of granite, ensconced in flattering sides.
I thought that since you pretty much need a 4x4 to get to the trail head and there is only one marked trail into the Horn Fork Basin it would be very private and isolated, but no. Welcome to Colorado. There were people somehow driving their Mitsubishi Eclipse rentals up there and there were plenty of people around. Crowds of people, actually coming up from several different approaches. Still a great trip though. read more
