Who needs art museums and architechure or restaurants or bars when you can have slides and swings and splash fountains? This one was pretty good. My 3-year-old ran around here for over an hour without getting bored. In addition to the great playground structures, the area sits alongside the railroad tracks and this was a great thing for all the kids present. Every time a train went by they all dropped what they were doing, rushed over the fence, commented on the train (it's length, it's noise, etc, etc.) in a way that kids do so well and adorably. It was good fun for all of us. It was too cold for him to run through the splash fountain, but if we are back this way in warmer weather I'm sure it will be a big hit.

It is located in the suburb of Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. The Peninsula is narrow, and on the other side is Pilot Beach facing the Bay of Plenty with calmer waters. We came for a visit on a Sunday in mid April, and the beach was being enjoyed by locals, competing in a team obstacle course competition. But even then, there was a ton of open space for beach lovers, with the wide sandy beach providing just a gorgeous backdrop. It truly is a picturesque beach.

It seems like you could spend a full day here pretty easy. Do a little hiking in the morning and be rewarded with a great view of the beach and bay, then relax on the beach all day. The sand is very soft and perfect for footsies. There's also bike baths and paved walking trails offering something for everyone. There's quite a few restaurants and ice cream places just walking distance from the beach in case you get hit by the hungries throughout the day. I was also really impressed to see the water bottle refilling stations to help keep you hydrated. The day we were there we saw a lot of surfers out and the water was pretty rough. I imagine this is a better beach for laying out on rather than for swimming. Pretty incredible area though, wish I lived next to it!

There's a two person swing which again should only be attempted by the agile and sober...and preferably of the smaller in stature and of similar sizes. The park is clean with well kept gardens. The toilets are on an electronic release and subjected to vandalism. It would pay to bring your own disinfectant wipes but there is toilet paper and the hand dryers are working! Bonus! The park benches are under luscious green trees which provide cool shade which was welcome respite on a hot day like today. Best not to hang around after dark. Best not to park your freedom camper nearby either. The area can be a bit rough. Other than that, enjoy! Other than that, it's a blast!

OMFG THIS PLACE IS HEAVEN. Seriously I think it's my new happy place. I am a big fan of the…read moreoutdoors, nature, and especially waterfalls, so finding this place was a dream come true. I came here with my partner on a road trip from Auckland, and we spent wayyy longer here than we imagined we would. We climbed rocks and swam in the cold water and took loads of photos (this place is seriously 'gram worthy) and stretched out on the boulders like a couple of lizards. My fingers and forearms were actually sore later from all of the climbing I did. I don't think this place would be ideal for anyone who is handicapped, as you do have to walk over rocks to get anywhere. Though if you do want to check it out, you could just look from the bridge. McLaren Falls Park is one of the most magical places I've been in New Zealand, I would highly HIGHLY recommend coming here - even if you have to go out of your way, it's that worth it. Make sure you go to the actual park (a lot of people seem to just stop by the bridge, where a couple of the falls are) and do the hike to the real waterfall - that's where the really big one is!

Little Oneroa is to the east of the popular, touristy beach, Oneroa. I've driven past it a tonne of…read moretimes en route to Onetangi and Palm Beach and never really thought it had much to offer but as it turns out, I was wrong. We came here for a day at the beach last weekend and I was pretty damn impressed with all this petite, rather secluded beach had to offer. Plenty of shade, picnic tables, a bbq, playground, toilets, somewhat scummy showers, a dairy for refreshments, a fish 'n chip shop and food stand, Dragonfired, which is open 7 days a week during summer, just churning out woodfired pizzas and other such delectables. Although being a steamy AKL day, the beach wasn't at all crowded and we were able to nab a possie on the grass with a bit of a shade and a picnic table. It was absolute bliss! Definitely worth a look as an alternative to the hustle & bustle of the other Waiheke beaches.

Totara Park is a South Auckland staple. Its highly likely that growing up in the Manurewa/Manukau…read morearea meant you were here for swimming lessons, a day out with family or school, or a hangout with friends. Its ideal for family picnics, barbecues (they have facilities available) and get-togethers. The children's playground keeps the younger ones, and the young at heart, entertained. The free supervised swimming pools are open in February and March, and are perfect for that relaxing swim on a scorching day. As a teenager, my dad dragged my siblings and I here every morning of the school holidays for the 45 minute bush walk, and while I barely liked it back then, I'm grateful. These days, that bush walk, among the other trails you can take at Totara Park, are somewhat of a blessing (apart from the killer stairs!). The farm track from the Redoubt Rd entrance to the main picnic area on Wairere Road is a popular one, just be sure not to run past the cows as they can get pretty scary (for me at least). Another track, the Puhinui Stream Forest Trail, takes about two hours to complete and connects Totara Park with the nearby Botanic Gardens.
