Mount Maunganui beach is great to look at, but in practice, it's really a surfer's beach. The few times I've gone into the sea here I've been absolutely freaked out but the current/tide. I'm a routine ocean-goer but not a very good swimmer. I enjoy a good wave in my face or a boogie-boarding or body-surfing, but this beach actually scares me. I think if you have small children or some such you should definitely only go in areas where there are lot of people already swimming or in places where a lifeguard is on duty. Don't just jump in any old part of the beach, I mean.
As for the quality of it, beautiful stretches of white sand beaches, often windy but nice, lovely shells to collect, and a couple of islands/peninsulas to explore. Definitely iconic. read more
