Split Oak Trail at Moss Park
    Jennifer C.

On a weekday morning in February, we were among a small handful of guests enjoying Moss Park. We drove down near the campground area to access the Split Oak Trail which is part marsh and part forest. The hiking surface is a sand road, although no vehicles or bicycles are permitted. You can hear a soft white noise hum of the surrounding roadways and the flight path overhead, but beyond that, all you hear are nature sounds. This was my first visit here and I'm excited to return. $3 admission for 2 guests. Plenty of parking. Watercraft launch area. Lakefront views. Large playground. Picnic pavilions. Hiking trails. Fishing. Campground for RV and tents.

I was looking for a place to ride my bike this afternoon that wasn't too far from home. Moss Park looked like a nice place to spend the day, though the website didn't specifically say that they had bike trails. It turned out to be a hidden treasure. Moss Park is on a peninsula between Lake Mary Jane and Lake Hart, and connected to 2,000 acres of Split Oak Preserve. It cost $3 to get into the park. Pets and alcohol are not allowed. There were no designated bike paths but we were told that we could ride on the roads that were made of concrete and sand. It was so peaceful and serene. The preserve has miles pristine and spacious trails with beautiful scenery and wildlife. The park has a beach, boating, fishing, hiking, picnic, and bird watching. They cater to campers, with over 50 RV sites with water hookups and facilities. Riding through the park was very Zen and I hope to come back when the weather gets warmer to kayak.

What a great discovery! Since I work and go to school in the new Medical City, I have been spending much more time in the Lake Nona area. I didn't want to go all the way back to my house downtown after getting my hair done out by Waterford so I decided to do a little exploring before heading to class. Thanks to Yelp (of course) I ended up here! A small $3 entrance fee wasn't bad and the park was so peaceful and rather empty. I always carry my hammock with me (ENOs are the best!) so I strung it up on some trees by the lake and got a little studying done. So much better than being stuck inside a coffee shop! I can't wait to come back when I have some more time to explore!

    Gorgeous Moss Park

This is surely the BEST park to observe Florida's finest nature & wildlife. And it is the largest! Huge trees with years & years of long spanish moss hanging greeted us as we entered the park. We just loved the scenery, its amazing. We saw sandhill cranes and their chicks, up close & personal on our nature walk. There was even a guide with a cart load of taxedermied animals and he was talking & talking about them. The kids LOVED that part. They got to touch a cougar & snakes ;) There is an entry fee into the park, but it was worth it. We need to preserve this gem for future generations. There is also camping, swimming in the lake, playgrounds, nature walks with guides, pavillion rentals, softball fields, sand volleybal. We will be going back, as its a wonderful place for families. Perfectly out of the way! It was just gorgeous!!l

Beautiful, huge and amazing park near Lake Nona area!! Let's start off by saying that there's an entrance fee of $3.00 per vehicle (that covers up to two people) or a $5.00 fee for vehicles with 3-8 people. Honestly, nobody should complain about the fee since it helps maintain this beautiful park. This park has lots of fun areas to visit. First off, as a Geocacher, I have to point out that there are several challenging (Which I have yet to find) and non-challenging Geocaches for the whole family to enjoy. Also, you can make a day visit or stay in their campgrounds for a weekend with friends or family (Alcohol is not allowed though). They have lots of picnic tables, a clean water source and even Restrooms with showers as well! There's this amazing lake where you can go for a swim, fish or even go for a boat ride. Keep in mind this is a huge park so do not neglect to ask for a map at the entrance gate and feel free to ask for guidance from the friendly park rangers...Also, remember that like any park, you will probably encounter wildlife (hopefully only deers and squirrels) and that you should take appropriate equipment and clothes (even if going for a day trip). This place is truly beautiful and well taken care off and I hope to visit it soon!

Great place to get away and relax. Has water and electric hook up and has a dump station. Lots of wild life. Always booked so make sure it's in advance. Has stand up grill picnic table.

Easy trails but pretty muddy or just tilled. I'd go again but thankful I couldn't bring my dog.

The neighborhood and the park is named after one of the earliest property owner's daughter's favorite novel, Lorna Doone, written by English author, Richard Doddridge Blackmore, published in 1869. Lake Lorna Doone was the site of the South's first integrated Little League Baseball game on August 9, 1955. The 1955 little league season was the first after US Supreme Court rulings had eliminated "separate but equal" conditions in the nation's schools and public parks. The Pensacola Jaycees were declared winners of their local district by Little League headquarters in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. When local officials would not allow them to play against the all-white teams they instead advanced to the Florida State Tournament which was held at Lake Lorna Doone Park. They ended up losing to host Orlando in the second round, 5-0 but they were welcomed by the hometown crowd and given encouragement. In 2021, 12 acre Lake Lorna Doone Park underwent an $8 million renovation. Added to the park was the nine hole Arnold Palmer Putting Experience, fitness stations, a playground, football fields, basketball courts, a splash pad and the Winnie Palmer Nature Trail. I especially liked the nature trail where I got to see native plants and wildlife. With the upgrades, this park now has all of the amenities needed to inspire a healthy, active lifestyle for the West Lakes families who live in this neighborhood and all who visit.

This is located right next to the Dinosaur ride in DinoLand U.S.A. This entire area is undergoing a major renovation but one of the parts that has not changes is the playground and the Boneyard. At first glance, it looks like just a kids' play area--but don't let that fool you. It's actually a super fun place to explore, especially if you need a break from the long lines and walking. The whole area is themed like an old dinosaur dig site, and it's packed with things to climb, slide down, and explore. There's a big shaded dig pit where kids (and yeah, maybe some adults too) can uncover massive "fossils" using shovels and brushes. It's all soft, sandy gravel so it feels safe, and it's surprisingly relaxing to just hang out there for a bit. I loved how detailed the theming was--cranes, tools, signs, bones sticking out of the ground--it really felt like a working dig site. It's also fenced in and well shaded (but NOT air conditioned), which makes it a perfect spot for parents to relax while the kids burn off some energy. An added bonus is this is one of the many places in the park where you can earn a sticker for the Wilderness Explorer Badge. So, if you're in Animal Kingdom with little ones (or even if you're just a big kid at heart), The Boneyard is definitely worth a stop.

As an added bonus, the slides are large enough for my 300 lbs frame to fit through. So I could chase my kids up and slide down with them just in case. There is a bridge that you can cross once inside the attraction. It leads to an excavation site with larger than normal sand rocks. Kids can dig out dinosaur shaped bones or just fill tons of green buckets. Characters will visit the play area from time to time. During our visit we were visited by Pluto who marched around and played with the children. There is stroller parking and alcohol hand gel for when you leave.
